DCON District Convention:

We’re Mad for Service

This year’s 2011 District Convention was held in Dallas, TX. District Convention is where

clubs from all over Texas and Oklahoma gather to learn more about Key Club, visit forums

for training, compete in contests, such as the talent show, Just Dance 2, Oratory, and Im-

promptu Essay, and much

more. District Convention

takes place over 4 days. Key

Clubs who attend DCON can

participate in the Service Fair.

This year, Key Clubbers pack-

aged food for Kids Against

Hunger for hungry families in

Honduras. We packaged 19,716

meals!!!!! Great job!

Forums are opportunities for Key Club-

bers to further develop their leadership

skills.

Forums range from

tips on specific

officer positions, to

developing public

speaking skills, and

even can address

stress relief tips! The

forum activity

shown below, was in

the public speaking

and leadership ses-

sion. Key Clubbers

were asked to cre-

ate a poster that represented the qualities of a leader. They were then asked to pre-

sent their work to the entire forum.

Please consider going to DCON 2012. It is a blast! If you need help fundraising let me

know! I have some great ideas that I cannot wait to share with you!

Div. 3S Project

HOPE FOR THE HUNGRY

DIVISIONAL PROJECT

1 in 4 American children go to bed hungry. 925

million people are affected by hunger

worldwide. About

$144 can feed a

family for a year.

As Key Clubbers, we

can join together to

fight hunger in our

local area and

overseas. This

divisional project

focuses on, but is

not limited to,

children affected by

hunger .

I ask that each club participates in the

divisional project this year.

Hope For the Hungry is an excellent

opportunity for Key Clubs to make an

impact on the current and future lives of

individuals.

Hunger can hinder a child’s potential by

limiting their attention span, therefore

restricting their learning capabilities and

furthermore their futures as educated

members of society.

We can make a difference, whether in

the life of a child, of a family, or an in-

dividual.

Project Ideas:

Canned food drives

Walks against hunger

Volunteering at soup kitchens

Food Banks

Benefits for homeless shelters

-Sack lunch sandwich making

-Benefit drives

-Donations

Fundraising for overseas hunger or-

ganizations

Example Organizations:

30 Hour Famine

Feed the Children

UNICEF

Drive to End

Hunger

SEARCH

Feed America

Bread for the World

There are an abundance of anti-hunger organizations to choose from! I hope I have in-

spired you to participate. If you have any please email me to let me know: [email protected]

The 3S Key Note Bulletin Stories, spotlights, articles, and shout-outs for and by 3S Key

Clubbers

This month: these stories are straight from DCON,

and local area clubs! Port Neches Groves Key Club

BY: Victoria White

Port Neches Groves HS

One word defining the Port Neches

Groves Key Club is hard working participa-

tion in various service projects such as Alex’s

Lemonade Stand, or helping out at a local

soup kitchen. These projects have certainly

shaped our organization into a group of car-

ing individuals who yearn to make a differ-

ence. Perhaps the most rewarding experience

was working with the Greater ARC of Beau-

mont. We have helped with Fall Festivals,

holiday parties and most of all making chil-

dren with disabilities feel special. Through

District Convention, I hope our Key Club can

learn a lot, strengthen our friendships, and

inspire people to make a positive impact.

Key Club to Circle K: Developing a Leader

BY: Thu-Mai Nguyen

M.B., Lamar HS

As a fellow Key Clubber at Lamar High School I have enjoyed my two years helping out my community. I have been volunteering for years and even joined other volunteering service organizations at my school but I especially value being in Key Club for the opportunities it provided. I was able to get in touch with my peers to come together and help those in need. I have participated in making sandwiches for the homeless, numerous fun run marathons, fund-raising carwashes, Alex’s Lemonade Stand, and at-tending our district’s Fall Training Conference. What I really appreciated about Key Club was the large net-work of people I got to become familiar with. At the Fall Training Conference, I met members of Key Club from schools close-by and all around Houston. I was able to interact and see how other students are taking the initiative and using Key Club at their school to make a difference. This helped us in creating new ideas to recruit members and try new projects. I also enjoyed the enter-tainment portion of the conference such as the Harry Potter themed Quidittch Ice Breaker and the magic perfor-mance where I got to be part of a levitating trick! Key Club has given me so much enjoyment in helping my com-munity and becoming a leader in making a difference that I wish to continue my experience in college by starting a Circle K!
