HASSRA and HASSRA Leeds

IMPORTANT New membership criteria which might save you money!HASSRA has introduced a National Associate Membership Scheme (NAMS) to enable membersto maintain a relationship with HASSRA if they have had to leave the Department for Work andPensions (DWP) or Department of Health (DH) due to a change in government organisation. Thisincludes:

· DH Arms Length Bodies (for example NHS England and Trust Development Authority)

·        DWP staff transferred to My CSP·        Other staff who changed employer but retained a link with the parent Department (either DWP or DH) in the last 12 months.·        Some other former DH/DWP staff previously transferred out·        People who have left DWP or DH on Voluntary Early Severance

The people in the last three categories above must have been members of HASSRA until theirrole changed and then maintained an unbroken period of HASSRA Leeds Associatemembership. Arms length body are not required to demonstrate this.

How much does it cost?NAMS membership is available for £21.60 a year, (the same price as OrdinaryMembership) and considerably cheaper than the usual Associate membershipcost of £33

How is NAMS membership paid?NAMS members must pay a one-off annual fee of £21.60 direct to NationalHASSRA by credit or debit card. Unfortunately, we can’t take deductions fromsalary because of payroll issues.

What’s the difference for NAMS members?NAMS members have the same voting rights as ordinary members, can take advantage of allmember offers and benefits and join National or Regional competitions.

NAMS members can either join the regional HASSRA group they currently reside in or one theyhad previous ties to if they have changed location.

They can’t take part in the National HASSRA Lottery or hold office as a National or RegionalChairperson, Local Club Secretary or Treasurer because there has to be an employmentrelationship with DH or DWP to do this.

What does this mean for HASSRA Leeds Associate members who are entitled tojoin NAMS?If you are a HASSRA Leeds Associate Member in one of the groups listed above, you canconvert to NAMS and claim a refund from HASSRA Leeds of the remaining months of yourAssociate membership.

example:If you work for NHS England in September 2014 and joined HASSRA as an Associate member inMarch, you can claim a refund of 6 months Associate membership, or £10.80.To join NAMSUse the NAMS form on the National HASSRA website, send it by POST to National HASSRA. Toclaim a refund of HASSRA Leeds associate membership fees you may have paid to the Forum, email [email protected] with your HASSRA Leeds Associate membership number (onthe white card with the purple owl on you were given by the forum) DO NOT copy the NAMSform to Peter. What if you’re not entitled to join NAMS?You can remain a HASSRA Leeds Associate member but you will continue to pay annualmembership fee of £33.60 to the Forum leisure centre

Advance Notice of proposedfly trip to ISTANBUL 2016

Staying at a Central 3* hotel - 4 nights B&B (TBC)21 January 2016

We have been negotiating with Cities Direct to try to pull together a 4 night stay in Istanbul inJanuary 2016 for up to 30 people. This is by no means a completed deal and will depend onus giving a detailed list of names of those who are interested.

The trip will be by air from Manchester and it is possible that we may be able to arrangeseparate transport to and from the airport from Quarry House, which will incur an additionalcost.

We have a projected price of £350 based on 2014 prices - but wait to learn of the confirmedcost when flights are released in 2015. We propose a HASSRA Leeds subsidy of 40% - whichcould potentially bring the cost for HASSRA Leeds members to £210 pp. (A single supplementof £80 has been given)

Flights are only published 10 months in advance and as everyone knows, once any interest inflights has been shown, the airlines drastically increase prices

It’s our intention to book flights through Cities Direct immediately they are published to get thebest deal, which means people who are interested must supply all required details in advanceand commit to this trip when prices are confirmed.

We therefore intend to reserve places for 30 people and are asking for a deposit of £50pp. tobe paid by the end of January 2015 - applications will be taken as a commitment towards thistrip.

IMPORTANT The deposit will only be refunded if the trip is cancelled due toexcessive price increases of MORE than £75 per person, above those anticipated.

Applicants should familiarise themselves with the HASSRA Leeds terms published in each issueof the Newsletter. Insurance and a 10 year valid passport, with minimum of 6 mths validity, willbe required when travelling.

Please complete the attached application in full and send with a cheque to Tony Armitage,114 Kingswear Crescent, Leeds LS15 8NE

Alternatively you can pay the deposit direct into the HASSRA Leeds bank accountBank Account Name: HASSRA LeedsBank Sort Code: 08 90 72Bank Account Number: 50105832 Ref: Istanbul 16

Cheques should be made payable to HASSRA Leeds. In the event of over subscription, ifadditional places are not available, the usual HASSRA draw will be made.

Don’t just sit there!Sign up now if you’re interested in Taekwondo, Self Defence, beginning fitness classes or any other activity with HASSRA

TaekwondoTaekwondo is a Korean martial art combining combat and self-defence withsports and exercise. If you’re interested in taking up (or improving) Taekwondoplease let me know by emailing Elizabeth Letaief stating whether you are anabsolute beginner or have some experience, would prefer lunch time or afterwork classes and if there are any days of the week you can’t make.

Self defenceIf the thought of Taekwondo is a bit daunting or not your cup of tea, but wouldlike to learn self-defence, we are also looking into setting up a 12 weeklunchtime course which includes the psychology of attack, and how to avoidlooking like a potential victim as well as practical moves to defend yourself. Thecharge will depend on the number of participants but is likely to be between£1 and £3 per week for HASSRA members. Non-members are welcome butwould have to pay a little more. Again, please [email protected] the days of the week you can and can’tattend.

Beginning fitnessI’m looking for at least five other people to join me in a beginner’s fitness class, run by the Forum. This class is for anyone who wants to start getting fit but is abit daunted by joining in existing classes. Email me if you’re up for it!

Any ideas? If you have an idea for a new class, or activity, please contact me or Phil orhave a word with Craig at the Forum if it’s about exercise. All we need is aminimum of six regular members to make it worthwhile. It would help immensely if you’re not following the hyperlinks if you put eitherTaekwondo, self-defence, fitness or new idea in the subject of the email.

QuarryHouse Choir

What a great two weeks it has beenin the life as a choir member in thefew weeks leading up to Christmas..

We boarded the mini-bus with excitement early oneDecember morning to travel to Blackpool. We arrivedat Peel Park and joined up with our fellow choirs fromBlackpool and Sheffield, spending the morningrehearsing for the first time as a joint choir. We alllooked splendid with red Christmassy themed jumpers, antlers and other joyous headwear. Our first performance was to our colleagues in PeelPark and we were warmly greeted by an enthusiasticaudience. We sounded wonderful with theopportunity to sing in our parts. In the afternoon we went to a local hospice as part ofthe Blackpool office community 10000. Thisperformance again was well received with thepatients joining in with our repertoire. A number of ourchoir members took the time to make some purchasesin the hospice shop. The trip home was via a bus ride along the sea front aswe sang ‘we do like to be beside the seaside’. Theday was topped off with a wonderful meal at the Cowand Calf Hotel in Ilkley, where we entertainedourselves with some singing.

The following week we made two performances inQuarry House in the restaurant as staff had their

Christmas lunchesand also in the westentrance foyer. Wereceived positivefeedbackfor both of theseperformances as wekicked off Christmasfor many.

What we thoughtwould be our lastperformance of theyear was at theTrinity shoppingcentre in Leeds aspart of thechoirathon, 18choirs singing over18 hours to raise money for St Vincents. The wholeevent raised £3200. We were asked to help promotethe event by singing on live on Radio Leeds. Eight ofus turned up in the Radio Leeds studio with theorganiser of the choirathon. We sang a couple ofChristmas songs and Elaine gave an interview givingthe background to the choir.

We then received an invitation to sing at a Christmasparty that was being organised by NHS confederationfor a young boy who had spent the majority of theyear in hospital, Adam has won a number of awardsfor his blogs and poems and a party was organised forhim. We went through our Christmas repertoireincluding solos of Adam’s favourite Christmas tunesRudolph and the snowman. Again we were givenmany plaudits for the standard of our singing and thislast performance set us all up for Christmas.

Being in the choir has been very rewarding during thisperiod of the splendid and varying performances

which helped us to show off our full repertoire. If youare interested in singing come and join us on a

Thursday lunchtime in the Woodpecker bar 13:00 to14:00.

Brief Intro :- Our group of intrepid (and sometimesinept) heroes, are investigating a ruined Temple andafter descending into the depths of the catacombsbelow, came face to skull with several groups of vilewalking skeletons. They realise the corridors are angleddown into the earth, turning at right angles andgetting shorter meaning the group are spiralling downand down into the unknown, with sword drawn theyface a door ….

Ainesilver pulls on thesqueaking handle of the dooralerting the four hoodedmonks at the end of thecorridor who rise and startshambling towards the doorbrandishing great silverwarhammers in their hands. Asthey reach the torchlight, theirdead eyes and grey fleshmake it obvious that they are

zombies! With sword and bow and the holy power ofthe Mother, the party are able to defeat the zombie-monks, but it is a tough fight. Examining the bodies, the party find nothing of interest except the silverwarhammers which are claimed by the fighters of thegroup.

Turning back to the door, the group ready themselves, knowing that whatever awaits them knows they arecoming. Throwing open the door, the group see nomovement at first, seeing a corridor leading to acollapsed and ruined altar with a couple of benchesarranged in front, like pews. As they start down thecorridor however, a howling hissing tide of undeadflesh leaps over the altar, four figures lope swiftly downthe corridor towards the party, one waving a glowing

blade, illuminating pallid, stretched skin andabnormally long fingers, ending in hooked claws.

Ainesilver strikes a blow against the closest one whichstaggers but fights on. Rolandius and Snyth fare nobetter, their blows wounding but not slaying thecreatures. Denagar’s shot flies wide while Krotchetprepares a mighty spell, ready to slay the creatures.Aleena, perhaps stunned by their ferocity, cannotsummon aid from her goddess.

With a low hiss, the creatures’ attack, whilst Ainesilverblocks the sword swing, he is caught off guard bycreatures second swing with his other hand, the talonson the end of its fingers raking a long shallow gashacross his side. Stunned, Ainesilver realises the creaturehas some sort of venom on its claws and his bodyspasms uncontrollably leaving him paralysed andunable to move! Rolandius and Snyth are also rakedby the cruel claws and find themselves paralysed astheir attackers turn with dripping jaws towards, theremaining besieged adventurers.

Denagar dodges the sword coming at him and blocksthe talon swipe, alone in the room, he backs up to tryand hold the door. One of the creatures lunges at himbut meets the Sword of Thaxon which smashes thecreature in two. As the tide of hissing evil lunges atDenagar, Aleena’s holy symbol begins to flicker withlight and raising it high she cries out for aid. In theirhour of need, the Goddess answers and the room isbathed in light, the remaining three abominationsretreating hissing into the darkness beyond the altar, casting fearful glances at Aleena and hungry glancesat the paralysed adventurers.

Denagar and Krotchet drag theirparalysed friends out of the corridor andswing the door shut, blocking the creature’s way.Unable to revive them and realising that the creatureswill catch them before they escape, they realise thatthe creatures would need to be dealt with. With asigh, Denagar and Krotchet fall back on their triedand tested method; Krotchet opens the door whileDenagar knocks an arrow shooting at the closestcreature.

At the touch of an arrow, the creature shakes off itsfear and charges back at the group, but the sword ofThaxon meets and dispatches it. In the meantimehowever, the remaining two creatures have shakenoff their fear and leap upon the surprised party.Denagar and Krotchet manage to land blows on thecreatures but Aleena is caught a viscous blow andfalls unmoving.

In his dark despair, Denagar remembers the gem onhis necklace and raises it whispering an arcane phrasethat causes it to flare with a brilliant white light. Thiscauses most of the creatures to back away blindlywhile Denagar attacks the remaining one.

Thinking the remaining creatures close to death,Krotchet lowers his guard for a moment, which is allthe time that the creature before him and Denagarneeds to strike. Lashing out with a clawed hand, thecreature rips of the end of Krotchets nose, and theparalysed adventurer can only watch as the vilecreature stuff the flesh into its mouth and eats it!

Retching at the sight, Denagar finishes off Krotchet’sassailant and using a combination of the blinding lightfrom his gem and his bow, deals with the remaining

creature. Several hours later, the paralysis wears offand the group are able to move. Having taken abattering, the healing potions are used and thepatched up party decide to continue on.

Snyth opens the door and aresurprised when the corridor in frontof them is empty except for a dooron the far end of the South wall.Cautiously making their way downthe corridor, they find this newdoor unlike the others; it is smoothand featureless, made of a strangegrey cold material that glows with

an otherworldly power.

Above the door carved into the stone arch werestrange, mysterious words:-

“Only the will of the gods can help you now,”

The group had spent several minutes trying variousacts or desperation and often lunacy to open thedoor to no success. It proved impervious to damageand the non-plussed adventurers could not fathomhow to open it. That is however, until Aleena raised herholy symbol, bathing it in warm light. There was astrange “pop” sound like a balloon bursting before thedoor swung easily open, revealing a black voidbeyond, through the crack in the edge of the door.

Next time …. Our Adventure meets its conclusion in“Session 5: The Reckoning” ……

Well, have no fear this little piece is about the key pieces of kit you should think aboutinvesting in.Good running shoes: Most running shops will do a gait analysis to ensure you get trainers suitable for your running style a good pair ofrunning shoes will make your runs much more enjoyable. Most running shoes provide cushioning and stability that the runners require butdon’t be afraid to try different styles, makes and sizes and a little jog around the shop is a must! Some shops like ‘up and running’ may alsolet you test the shoes outside as long as you don’t get them dirty!A high impact sports bra: men are excused from buying one! But ladies I am afraid this is a must, not only will it make your run much moreenjoyable but once the ligaments around the breast stretch there is no going back. Sports shops are beginning to start measuring toensure you get the correct sports bra, but make sure you look for one that is designed for high-impact activities.

Regular runs:Meet 12:15 in the Forumon Tuesdays & Thursdays

Hint of the monthMake it a habit – Motivation is the key. Once you get into the habit (and it will take a couple of weeks or so), it will get easier, honestly.Even if you are blowing at the end of a run, you never feel worse than when you set off. You might ache a bit the next day, but it will beworth the effort. Just take your time, and build up slowly at your own pace. Not everyone is the same. Once you get into the cycle oftraining regularly, keep it up. Don't take holiday breaks. It will be all too easy to fall back into old habits. (runnersworld)

BOOKING TERMS AND CONDITIONSHASSRA TRIPS AND EVENTS

The following terms and conditions will apply to all events to ensure that every member has a fair opportunity toparticipate in events. The terms and conditions should be read in conjunction with the relevant booking form.

1. Wherever possible events will be advertised with a closing date for applications that is at least 4 weeks from the datefirst advertised, including proposed events where expressions of interest are being requested.

2. Persons wishing to travel together should complete one application form per room, submit their applications together, and determine a lead person who will be responsible for forwarding payments due and act as the contact on behalf of thegroup via a signed disclaimer agreeing to these terms and conditions.

3. A booking will not be accepted or entered in a draw without the correct deposit and signed disclaimer.

4. Once the closing date is reached, the number of applicants wishing to travel will be determined. Where there aresufficient places for all applicants, then deposit cheques will be banked and places confirmed.

5. Members should be aware that once deposit cheques have been banked they are not returnable and travellers will beliable to pay full price of the trip (unless the place is subsequently filled). Full price means the undiscounted "nonmember" price. Where necessary, HASSRA (Leeds) will provide an invoice for the full price for insurance purposes buttravellers need to be aware that the cost of insurance, (if purchased), is non-refundable.

6. Travel operators will be asked to date insurance cover from the date on which they receive notification of the personstravelling. It is therefore essential to obtain adequate travel insurance before booking if you do not purchase theinsurance offered.

7. Single supplements. There will be no member discount on supplements for travellers wishing to secure a singleroom. Where members indicate on the application form that they are willing to share a room with someone of the samesex, the organiser will arrange for pairing. If an individual has indicated that they are willing to share, they will not have topay a single supplement even if no pair is available.

8. Where the number of applicants exceeds the places available, a random draw of application forms will determinethose successful in receiving a place, subject to Clause 8. Cheques accompanying these applications will then beprocessed. Remaining applications will continue to be drawn at random to determine the order of the reserve list.

9. The trip organiser will be granted up to two places on that trip without entry into the ballot. An organiser is the personwho arranges the trip on behalf of the HASSRA Events Committee, whether or not s/he is a member of the Committee.

10. Where expressions of interest have been sought for a proposed trip, if that trip is subsequently confirmed, applications received from those expressing interest prior to the closing date will be given priority to book before anyunfilled places on the trip are advertised. On these occasions, once the closing date is reached, remaining places will befilled on a first come first served basis.

11. Members who have been unsuccessful in a ballot for a trip may record this on their application for the next trip, to thesame destination, and will be given priority for available spaces.

12. Applications from solely non-member groups, i.e. not accompanying a full HASSRA member, wishing to participate inan event will be considered only in the event of places remaining after the closing date has passed.

13. The priority order will be: a) Organiser +1, b) Previously unsuccessful on similar trip (ballot if necessary), c) Priorregistered interest (ballot if necessary), d) Other Members, e) Non Member groups.

14. Non-members may apply to travel at the discounted rate on an event provided that they satisfy the criterion forassociate membership and send a completed application for membership together with the appropriate payment, on orbefore the closing date for the trip. Associate Membership will last for 12 months from the date of processing theapplication. The Committee reserves the right to determine specific criteria for prior membership on certain trips. Anysuch requirements will be notified in the advertisement. Participants are reminded to conduct themselves in anappropriate manner while attending HASSRA sponsored trips and events.
