HORSE LOVERS QUIZ

THERAPEUTIC RIDING HELPS AUTISMTherapeutic riding isalso called "Hippotherapy".

What is Hippotherapy?

Hippotherapy (from the Greek "hippo"meaning "horse") is physical therapy thatutilizes the natural movement of the horse tohelp riders regain physical strength, mobility, and coordination. The similarities between ahorse's pelvic movements at a walk and themovement of a normal human pelvis enablesthe rider to physically learn or relearn skillsand movements that may have beenlost or compromised. Speech, physical, or occupational therapypatients can improve muscle

tone, balance, posture, coordination, respiration, strength, and body awareness asthey sit upon and ride a horse in an enjoyableand effective method of treatment.Hippotherapy patients tend to be the bestmotivated physical therapy patients, becausethe work is fun!

Children can greatly benefit fromhippotherapy when it is used as part of theiroverall treatment program. Disabilities thatcan be treated through traditional physical, occupational, or speech therapy, can be treated

through hippotherapy.

This type of therapy makes it possiblefor autistic children to participate inhorseback riding activities thatencourage learning, verbal andnonverbal expression, positive socialinteraction, and bonding with the horse. It has been a proven method for helpingchildren of all ages who are autistic smileand laugh and even utter their firstwords during a therapeutic riding lesson. The rewards are priceless! If you areinterested in learning more about ridingtherapy please call Victory stables.

Look-A-Like Horses Answers: Santa & Candy

A horse has a wide range of vision. A horse can seecompletely around its entire body except for smallblind spots directly in front of its face, underneathits head, and directly behind itself. This is why it'svery important not to walk up right behind a horse- you are in its blind spot and if you startle it youmay get kicked.

A horse is usually not considered to be a "horse" untilit is 5 years old. Before that the males are called coltsand females are called fillies. However, it is stillacceptable to call a colt or filly a horse.

A foal is a very young horse and can be either maleor female.

Most of us don’t think abouthandwriting very much, but it does saya lot about us. We’ve all heard abouthow handwriting analysis can pinpointpersonality characteristics andbehaviors based on direction, pressure, stroke, consistency and so forth. In art,we are able tosee these samevariations in

drawing, painting and other mediums, both inthe text of the artwork or the signature of thechild.

When looking at ink, pencil or brush strokes ofartworks, art educators are able to recognizeimpulsiveness or meticulous precision, avoidance or preference for color, confident orhesitant markings. Sometimes it may be due to personality, othertimes due to how the art instrument is held! We have been noticingan increase in poor handwritings and control of art instruments overthe past 20 years, as handwriting is no longer considered as importantas it used to be in the public school systems and parents as well.

In our classes we encourage our students tocome up with a plan, using ‘thumbnail’sketches to brainstorm much the same waystudents do in school when working on astory or other project, alone or with a group. We teach them how to further develop andarticulate their ideas by first slowing down,

then adding details andediting. The results arealways a vast improvementover the original and thechild feels a great sense of accomplishment and pride.

Now the benefits… Parents tell us about theimprovements that both they and the child’s teachersare noticing. No surprise to us! The new techniqueslearned in art are spilling over into other areas. Thechild has noticed his/her own improvement in art

and is applying it to where it benefits most. They are learning to hold their drawingpens, paint brushes, markers and pencilsmore efficiently and getting better results. We often work with the parents and otherteachers in demonstrating correct “grip” ofdrawing and writing tools, something thatmany parents aren’t aware of. If a pen orpencil is flopping around while the child isdrawing, it is also happening when thechild is writing. As their grips becomemore secure, their control improves. Mathscores improve. Why? because the numbersbecome more legible. Spelling gradesimprove for the same reason.

Parents, please take the time to observe this important development. It will affect your child throughout life. If concerned, speak to yourchild’s teachers and buy ergonomic grips that help them hold theirwriting instruments correctly; it will make adifference. Very extreme or unusual grippingmay lead to physical impairments to thefingers, wrists and elbows. Occasionally, parents have discovered weaknesses ingripping or problems with motor skillsthrough handwriting development and arereferred to an occupational therapist toimprove the child’s abilities. Very often thetherapist suggests art as a therapeuticactivity for the child to enjoy. When this isbrought to our attention, we will work along the same lines tohelp achieve progress as well as artistic growth and pleasure.

Two years ago the Children's Hospital in Boston started atreatment program for child migraine sufferers. At the end ofthe program, of the children who had received acupuncturetreatments, 70 per cent of them stated that their migraineintensity levels were reduced.

When parents were asked to confirm, 55 per cent agreed thattheir children did indeed reap the benefits from acupuncturetreatments. Out of all the kids in the study, only one said thattheir symptoms got worse by undergoing acupuncture.

Another study, also done at the Children's Hospital in Boston, focused on acupuncture treatment on children between the agesof 6 months to 18 years. These kids were sufferers of headaches,

back pain, stomach problems, and other common childhoodcomplaints. At the beginning of the study the patients rankedtheir pain as an eight upon ten. At the end of the year, theaverage pain rating plummeted to three. The children were alsosleeping better and attending school more often.

Acupuncture, an ancient Chinese practice where very fineneedles are inserted into the skin of the patients in order torestore the Qi (energy) and ultimately help to relieve pain andtreat diseases, is common amongst Singaporean adults andchildren. Acupuncture has become extremely popular in theUSA and many families are using acupuncture to help theirchildren.

225 Gordons Corner Rd., Manalapan, NJ • 732-446-0413Karen Kupfer MS.CCC SLP • Merrill S. Stauber MA.CCC SLPA Therapist Owned Operated Private Practice

The American Speech andHearing Association hasdeclared May "BetterSpeech and HearingMonth". We should markthis designation with anincreasing awareness ofhow speech and learningaffects our everyday life.

Speech, language and hearing issues are presentin every stage of life. Individuals are constantlydeveloping their listening, speaking, reading andwriting skills. These skills are essential for socialinteraction and academic success from infancythrough adulthood. When there are difficultiesin any of these areas, individuals experience abreakdown in their ability to communicate andinteract within their environment.

Most people take normal speech and hearingdevelopment for granted. However there arevarious reasons why children may not developwithin the norm, for example, ear infections orlimited tongue movement. Some children areborn with special needs and require theimmediate expertise of a Speech-LanguagePathologist. During interaction with their

children, parents shouldmonitor the following: does

the child respond tosound or his name?

Does the childunderstand everything

that is said to him?Does the child followdirections? Does thechild express wants and

needs easily? Is thechild's speech intelligible? Is

the child frustrated when trying tocommunicate? Any of these factors could because for concern!

As a person ages changes occur in their speechand hearing skills that may alter his or herquality of life. These quality changes includehearing loss, neurological impairment cause bystroke or Parkinson's disease, voice changes, difficulty with feeding or swallowing or braininjury. More subtle changes may occur as theindividual ages. These changes includedifficulty in auditory discrimination, difficultycommunicating with others, memory changesand changes in voice and speech production.

Accidents can occur that may cause injury tothe brain. A car accident, a blow to thehead, or a spinal injury may impair theability to communicate, cause memory loss, personality changes, changes in hearing, difficulty with reading and writing andemotional changes.

Where do you go from here? Parents knowtheir child better than anyone. If yourinstinct tells you that there may be difficultywith development, contact your pediatricianor family practitioner for guidance. If it isdetermined that a referral is recommended,a licensed speech-language pathologistshould be contacted for a speech andlanguage evaluation and/or audiologist for ahearing evaluation. Other options include

referral to an earlyinterventionprogram from birth to3 years of age or areferral to your localschool district for a childstudy teamevaluation froages 3 to 5.

Generally, a spouse or family member is thefirst to notice changes. They can help theindividual to identify their needs and beginthe process of locating the appropriateprofessional to help guide them. Referralsfor adults can come from many sourcesincluding their internist, primary carephysician, neurologist, ear, nose and throatdoctor, surgeon, other therapists andpsychologist.

The speech-language pathologist should belicensed by the state of New Jersey and have hercertificate of clinical competence for theAmerican Speech and Hearing Association.Thecredentials should read as M.A.CCC. orM.S.CCC. after the therapist's name. Anevaluation will determine areas of strength andweakness. This will result in the formulation ofa treatment program that includes goals andrecommendations.

MidState Therapy Associates is a privatepractice that provides speech and languageevaluations and therapy. Karen Kupfer andMerrill Stauber, own and operate the practice. They and their staff can provide evaluationsimmediately. There is no waiting list.

Please call Karen Kupfer or Merrill Stauber(732) 446-0413 with any questions, concerns,or to schedule and appointment.
