But God!

Dear Mayfield Church Family,

All of us can describe times in our life that were rough. You may be in the midst of one of those times right now. Sometimes the trouble is of our own doing, the result of our own trespasses and sins, as the Apostle Paul would say. Other times, life just happens and we face trials and tribulations great and small through no fault of our own. You have heard people say, “It is what it is.” Or, “Stuff happens.” Or, “That’s life.” Or, “That’s just the way it is.”

These sayings may or may not help. We hope and trust we live in a community of faith where we can share our challenges with others- finding comfort, hope, strength, and courage from the counsel and love of the people of God as we face life’s hardships.

Over and over again the Apostle Paul’s words in his Letter to the Ephesians have grabbed my attention. After describing how we were once “dead through the trespasses and sins in which you once lived,” Paul boldly proclaims these two words that change everything: But God!

But God who is rich in mercy …

But God who loved us with great love even when we were dead through our trespasses …

But God who shows the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus …

… made us alive together with Christ.

… raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.

… saved us by grace through faith – not of our own doing; it is the gift of God.

God did all of these things that changed the entire course and direction of our lives as followers of Jesus. But God does not leave us there. But God … is soon followed with these words: So that …

The love, mercy, and grace that describe the very character and nature of God lead to Part II of God’s saving work in our lives – namely, what we were saved for.

The gift of God is given to us so that the immeasurable riches of God’s grace can be shown through all the generations. God has saved us by grace so that we can do the good works that God prepared to be our way of life.

We have been made new in Christ Jesus, “created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life” (Ephesians 2:10).

May this be true of you and me and the Mayfield Church!

In Christ,

Pastor Jim

Buy Your School Supplies During Ohio’s Tax-Free Weekend!

As part of Mayfield’s “Hands That Serve” mission outreach program, we will be collecting school supplies for students at Rowland and Adrian Ele-mentary Schools.

We are asking each Mayfield Church family to buy one item, and we encour-age you to buy your item during Ohio’s Tax-Free Weekend, which starts on Friday, Aug. 2, at 12:01 AM and runs through Sunday, Aug. 4, at 11:59 PM.

During the Tax-Free Weekend, you can buy certain items and not pay any sales or use tax. Eligible items fall into several categories, including school supplies priced at $20 or less.

Bring your item to church throughout August and place it in the gray bin at any of the church entrances.

We will deliver the supplies to Rowland on Tuesday, Aug. 13, the night of the PTA’s Back-to-School Ice Cream Social, and throughout the month. Our teachers will give the supplies to students in need.

Put the Box Tops in a plastic bag in Pastor Jan’s mailbox in the office. (If you are a tutor at Rowland, you can give them to your teacher for the pizza party competition!)

2. Heinen’s If you are a member of Heinen’s Tasteful Rewards program, Heinen’s will donate up to 1% of your quali-fied purchases from Sept. 1 to April 1 to a local school of your choice. Log in at heinensrewards.com, or visit the Customer Service desk at your Heinen’s store, to choose Rowland as your school. Note: You must re-select your school every year for the dona-tion to continue.

3. Giant Eagle Each time you shop at Giant Eagle and use your Gi-ant Eagle Advantage Card, you can earn points for Rowland. Sign in (or create an account) at gianteagle.com, register your card and then go to the My Schools Page (link on gianteagle.com) and select Rowland Elementary/PTA as your school.

Our Partner Schools: Rowland and Adrian

Please join us on Sunday, August 11, for Holy Donut Day! That’s the day we eat donuts for a holy (good) cause: our reading program at Adrian School. The donations you give for our delicious Patterson’s donuts will help pay the ship-ping costs to send new books to our students.

Adrian first-grade teacher Karen Hadden and learning resource teacher Cathy Stang (pictured with Mayfield’s Ina Hard-esty) will be with us on Holy Donut Day to share stories about how our church’s book program is changing the lives of their students.

Since 2012, Mayfield Church has helped ship 48,443 new books (worth $502,369.42) to the nearly 300 students at Adrian.

This last academic year, 2018-2019, 5,667 new books (worth $61,627.43) were shipped to the school. And, Adrian students will have no shortage of reading material when they return to school this month. Already, 924 books (worth $13,664.76) have been shipped to the school … and are waiting for students to arrive on August 15.

The books come from First Book National Book Bank, which distributes more than 13 million books annually to students.

Is this program having an impact? One measure of success might be the AIR (American Institutes for Research) reading tests that meet state legis-lative mandates. Third-graders must pass this reading test to go on to the fourth grade. All third-graders take the test in the fall and again in the spring. In the fall Adrian had the highest percentage of third-graders in the district pass the AIRS state test. (The spring results will be available in Sep-tember.)

A big thank you! to the Pattersons for their incredible support of the book program … and to you for buying and eating the donuts.

Interested in Being a Tutor at Rowland or Adrian?

Our tutors say the hours they spend at our schools are the highlight of their week. Above, Phyllis Wright is one of our dedicated tutors, helping out on Thurs-days in Christy Grande’s second-grade classroom at Rowland. This is Phyllis’ seventh year at Rowland, and her fourth year with this second-grade class. For information about how you can become a tutor or a classroom assistant, see Pastor Jan.

Not able to be a tutor because of your work schedule?

We have other ways for you to become involved with our schools. On Tuesday, Aug. 16, you can be a part of Rowland’s Back- to-School Ice

Cream Social/Meet Your Teacher Night. We’ll meet at the school – 4300 Bayard Road – at 6:15 PM. From 6:30 to 8 PM, we’ll help the PTA serve ice cream to students and their families while the students play games and dance along with DJ Jim Rios, the deejay at our church picnic last month!

On Sunday, Aug. 25, come early and support our fabu-lous Book and CD Giveaway in Fellowship Hall. We put out new and gently used items for you to take home and enjoy. We ask that you leave a donation for the items. We continue to raise funds to send a student (and a friend) to Camp Asbury, our United Methodist camp in Hiram. (PS: We’ll take your book and CD donations up through Aug. 22! Bring them to Pastor Jan’s office.)

Collect items that help our PTA and teachers: See page 5 for ways you can clip coupons or shop at specific gro-cery stores to help the PTA buy needed equipment for classrooms.

Other requests: ** Gently used black, gray or navy sweat pants (sizes 6-14), for the Row-land and Adrian school nurses to give to students who have accidents or wardrobe issues. [Continued on page 8]

Other Requests:

“WISH YOU WELL” CENTER ** Used or new greeting cards (any occasion) and stickers for the “Wish You Well” Center in teacher Cathy Stang’s classroom at Adrian. When a child is absent, has arrived late, or has a family member in need of support,

that student can go the center, choose a card and write a note or picture to give to the person the student would like to wish well.

** Small denomination ($5) gift cards from Wal-Mart, 5 Below, Game Stop, McDonalds, etc., for teachers to give to students who show improve-ment.

You can drop off these items in Pastor Jan’s office. Thanks for caring about children in our communities!

-- Pastor Jan Ever wonder what happens to the extra snacks from our Spring Break Snack Bags? In April, we gave the extras to the boys and girls track team at Memorial Junior High in the South Euclid-Lyndhurst School District. Both teams performed well during the season. The girl’s 4x100 took 6th and the 4x200 took 2nd at the Middle School State Track Meet.

Guatemala Mission Trip

Page 10

This year, the Guatemala Mission Team went on their seventh trip. From July 13 to 20, they built three houses, helped administer a medical clinic,

assisted with a growing feeding program, and worked on a new orphanage on the mission sites.

By Bobbie Lynn Carson

Ever since I was a little kid, I have always wanted to go on a mission trip. I finally felt comfortable enough in my faith to be able to reach out and help people who are in need, and so that is why I decid-ed to go on a mission trip to Guatemala. From the second that the team stepped out of the airport to the day we had to leave, the Guatemalans were so loving and caring to make sure that our needs were met.

At the beginning of the week, I didn’t know what to expect about how well I would get along with the people there, but it turned out to be one of the best experiences I've ever had. For example, we went to the church that our team helped build a couple of years ago, and as soon as I stepped foot in the church, the Guatemalans welcomed us with hugs and were so grateful that we were there.

Seeing people who have so little be so excited to worship our God made me realize that you do not have to have a lot to be grateful. One of my favorite memories from the week was when we were building the houses, working among the families who would live in the houses we were building. Overall, I can honestly say that this trip was by far the best week of my summer and my life and I cannot wait to return to Guatemala in two years.

Mayfield Prayer Walk Thursday, Aug. 22 @ 7 – 8 PM

Mayfield Church Gazebo

How would you like to pray for our church? How would you like to get a little exercise outdoors, appreciating God’s Creation while praying? You have an opportunity to come with others and pray for Mayfield or your ministry by walking .92 miles around the parking lot. We will pray for the Lord’s presence to be here, that our ministries will continue to bear fruit, new people to come and learn more about Christ, and pray for each parking spot and the people who will be parked in them. We will walk rain or shine. All ages are welcome and we ask that children be supervised. Before we walk, Cyndi Nicholson will give suggestions on how to pray and you can add in your own prayer requests, as well. Elizabeth Burton, mem-ber of our 9:30 Worship Band, will play the guitar during the walk. You are also invited to stay for refreshments afterwards. We hope this will become an annual event. If you have any questions or if you would like to participate, email Cyndi at [email protected] or call 440-729-4006 x106.

By Katie Vriezen Bryan Stevenson is a graduate of Harvard Univer-sity, with both a master’s in public policy from the Kennedy School of Government and a JD from the School of Law. Mr. Stevenson has represented cap-ital defendants and death row prisoners for more than 30 years, beginning as a staff attorney with the Southern Center for Human Rights in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1989, he founded the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI), a private, nonprofit law organi-zation that focuses on social justice and human rights in the context of criminal justice reform in the United States, where he continues to serve as Executive Director today. Under his leadership, EJI has won major legal challenges eliminating ex-cessive and unfair sentencing, exonerating innocent death row prison-ers, confronting abuse of the incarcerated and the mentally ill, and aiding children prosecuted as adults. Mr. Stevenson and his staff have won re-versals, relief, or release from prison for over 135 wrongly condemned prisoners on death row and won relief for hundreds of others wrongly convicted or unfairly sentenced. Mr. Stevenson has argued and won mul-tiple cases at the United States Supreme Court, including a 2019 ruling protecting condemned prisoners who suffer from dementia, and a land-mark 2012 ruling that banned mandatory life-imprisonment-without-parole sentences for all children 17 or younger. Mr. Stevenson has initi-ated major new anti-poverty and anti-discrimination efforts that chal-lenge inequality in America. He led the creation of two highly acclaimed cultural sites which opened in 2018: the Legacy Museum and the Na-tional Memorial for Peace and Justice. Mr. Stevenson’s work has won him national acclaim and numerous awards, including the prestigious MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Prize Award Prize, the ACLU National Medal of Liberty, the Gruber Foundation International Justice Prize, the NAACP William Robert Ming Advocacy Award, the Ford Foundation Visionaries Award, and the Roosevelt Insti-tute Franklin D. Roosevelt Freedom from Fear Award.

When asked what fuels his work, Mr. Stevenson candidly identifies hope, driven and enabled by his faith. He cites Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is confi-dence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” (NIV). Mr. Stevenson acknowledges that he has felt battered and bruised by his work, fighting for the broken, the poor, the disfavored, the accused, the in-carcerated and the condemned. He states: “In order to do this work, you have to be able to believe what you have not seen. Hope is what will make you stand when everyone else is sitting. Hope is what will make you speak when everyone else is silent.” When asked why he titled his New York Times bestselling memoir Just Mercy, Mr. Stevenson replied: “Luke 6:36: ‘Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.’ We’ve gotten very hierarchical about mercy. We’ve gotten very conditional about mercy. We don’t want to give people mercy unless they meet our conditions. That’s not really mercy. Mercy is what you give to people who don’t deserve it.”

Be sure to pick up your copy of “Just Mercy” on Aug. 4 at the tables in front of the bookstore … and start reading! We are asking that you finish the book by Sunday, Sept. 22, the day our fall study be-gins … because … we will not be discussing the book chapter-by-chapter as we usually do. Instead, in our Sunday messages, in our LifeGroups, in our teen gatherings and in Stepping Stones and The Rock, we will be studying biblical themes that mirror the work of Bryan Stevenson and the work we as Christians are called to do in the world. Note: The book is free; if you would like to help defray the cost to the church, each book cost $8. You may give a donation at the book tables on August 4.

Summer Camp is flying by at Heartland! We are down to our last two weeks of fun in the sun. During the month of August, we will be learning about Toy Story’s Train Set and how it relates to Moses as a leader. We will learn about Toy Story’s Squeaky Toy and how it re-lates to spreading the Good News. We will also enjoy the Star Dome from Lake Metro Parks, a field trip to Chester Historical Village, a field trip to Jerry’s Farm next door and a visit from East Coast Custard! Then it will be time to get ready for our new school year.

As we look back over the past few weeks of summer camp, we see that God has truly blessed us in many ways. He provided safety for our staff and students. He guided us through His Word and helped us to draw closer to Him. He allowed us to have fun and enjoy being with each other. As part of the Heartland staff, we are touched every day, listening to the children talk to God through prayer and watching their excitement as they learn about God’s Word. We look forward to this continuing during the new school year.

The first day of preschool for the 2019-2020 school year will be Monday, Aug. 26. We are excited about the new year and the many new students who will be joining us. There are still a few openings available in the two younger classes. Our Pre-Kindergarten class, the Good Samaritans, is full. If you or anyone you know is interested in Heartland Childcare Center, please contact us at 440-729-4006 Ext. 116 or at [email protected]. The Heartland Staff prays you take some time to enjoy God’s beautiful creation during the summer season. God Bless!

On top of that, our semester kickoff event will be that evening! It’s a free event, so bring friends! **IMPORTANT: During this event, we will be sharing a new shift in focus for The Uprising. Here’s a bit of a preview of what’s to come…you won’t want to miss out on Aug. 25!

“It has been close to six years now that I have been on staff as the Youth Director at Mayfield Church. When we started, the youth group was dwindling and needed direction for the future years. I am honored that the Holy Spirit used me to come aboard and build relationships with youth and families that have now produced many new families and a rec-ord attendance at Aldersgate in the time I’ve been there. It hasn’t been without challenges, but I can confidently say that I’ve felt the presence of Christ in our group as we’ve met for Bible Studies, Sunday lessons, times of fun and fellowship, and the one-on-one discipleship with stu-dents and families alike. That is a HUGE win.

‘When we first started, those who were part of the student ministry vi-sion team prayed about and crafted a vision statement and purpose for the teenagers of Mayfield Church. We called ourselves “The Uprising” and our purpose was “Answering the Call for Change”. We based our-selves on the story of the Prodigal Son found in Luke, offering the world a radical and life-changing love that the father in this story offered his lost son. Our goal was to bring home the lost, those who feel not worthy of love, and those who didn’t feel like they belonged anywhere. I now feel led and called by the Holy Spirit to implement a next shift in our group. This has come with much prayer, discernment, and faith as I be-lieve our students and leaders have achieved true community amongst ourselves and have started to branch out by inviting others, as evidence of friends’ attendance at events and our powerful Aldersgate experience. The time is now to put our money where our mouth is.” -Adam Vodicka

Music Ministry In July, I attended the Regional Convention of the American Guild of Organists in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Every day we enjoyed four or five concerts, each at a different church or concert hall; participated in won-derful worship services, and attended help-ful workshops. To sing the great hymns of the church with several hundred musicians takes you to the edge of the pearly gates (almost)! The time spent in fellowship with colleagues from around the country is so rewarding!

Among the artists we heard were three people from Cleveland: Todd Wilson, Ni-cole Keller, and Katelyn Emmerson. It's thrilling to hear these performers! Thanks for supporting me in attending this exciting conference.

Stephen Ministry

One of the goals of Mayfield’s Stephen Ministry program is to serve people throughout our area, not just members of our own congregation. To that end, we’ve met with representatives from various community organizations including Ravenwood, Lake-Geauga Recovery Services, Department on Aging, United Way, Job & Family Services, and Citizen Circle. We also count on YOU, the members of Mayfield church, to spread the word about this wonderful, Christ-centered program of love and ser-vice to others. Jesus commanded us to love our neighbors and when we ask, “Who is my neighbor?” we know the answer is everyone God has placed in our sphere - not just members of the Mayfield Church and not just Christians, but everyone. Stephen Ministry is open to serving all those who are hurting. If you or someone you know would like more information about receiv-ing the services of a Stephen Minister, contact the referral coordinator, Joyce Gordon, at 216-570-3767 or [email protected].
