MASPAN loves to hear from you! Please send your letters to the editor at [email protected]. We will publish your letters as space allows.

Has Hell frozen over? Is this ever going to end, how
much more?? This has been brutal! Oh, you thought I was talking about the snow? Despite the fact that I think Hell has frozen over, and we are living in it, I was refer-ring to my dissertation. Almost there, I hope to defend in the be-ginning of April. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, and it’s not a freight train about to run me over!
Thirty years!
MASPAN is celebrating our 30th anniversary at the Spring con-ference. In honor of the momen-
tous occasion, MASPAN will offer a special member rate of $30 to attend on March 21st. There is still time to register, brochure and reg-istration are offered on the MAS-PAN website at www.maspan.org. Registration ends on March 16th. Hope to see you there! Remember, you are invited to stay for the ab-breviated board meeting after the conference.
PANAW
Be sure to let us know how you celebrated PANAW at your institu-tion, send pictures if available. As I have other years, I raffled off free
attendance to the MASPAN Spring Conference. The winners at UMass Memorial Medical Center were Martha Kupstas from the Hahnemann campus, Kim Wil-liams from Memorial, and Kim Oakes and Carol Dowen from the University campus. Congratula-tions to the winners! Did you win anything on your PANAW lottery ticket? Be sure to let us know.
Passion in Action Winners
We are fortunate to have two more Passion in Action winners from MASPAN, see their stories on pages 8 & 9. Congratulations ladies! If you are headed to the AS-PAN National Conference, don’t miss ASPAN Director Amy Doo-
ley’s discussion on the Art of Con-ferencing on page 6. The content is especially helpful for first-time attendees.
Happy Spring, no really, it is coming, really!! Hope to see you at the conference!

President’s Message
Winners All!
Kathy DeLeskey, DNP, RN, CNE, JBI-f also serves as MASPAN Director for Research. She is a Joanna Briggs Scholar and a professor at the Regis College/Lawrence Memorial School of Nursing
Patriot Nation rejoices! I hope everyone is enjoying
the snow . . . snow . . . snow. But it is alright since WE ARE THE C H A M P I O N S O F T H E WORLD ~ GO PATS!!! I love football and though my manicure took a nasty beating during the Super Bowl, I enjoyed the thrill of the game and the amazing ma-neuvering on the field. They played their hearts out and the pay-off was the Vince Lombardi Trophy and the adulation of the fandom and the league (not to mention huge bonuses). They cried, laughed, hugged, joked and endorphins presided.
PACU nurses also winners When PACU nurses play their
hearts out, they dole out expert assessment, early recognition and treatment of life threatening glitches, analgesic relief, reassur-ing comfort, appropriate suste-nance and hydration, thoughtful advice and sometimes, a little bit of themselves. Their bonuses include the flu, exhaustion, dried up hand skin, sore feet, varicosi-ties and holiday assignments. Most of the time, their patients do not remember them. Addi-tionally, they can enjoy a gour-met meal with expensive wine all while discussing a stage III wound exuding purulent drainage and a foul odor.
What would an alien think? Imagine for a moment that
you are an alien. You arrive on earth and begin to observe the life around you. You see the Su-per Bowl with its millions of fol-lowers and you see nurses work-ing in the PACU. What would you think? Perhaps the nurses are crazy?
Personal and consuming
We can never really see what an alien might see because we know too much and we are part of the society that spawns the
activities. But there is some-thing about being a nurse. It is personal and consumes us while we do our work. We connect on a private and intimate level with each individual patient. We give more than our expertise. If you do not love being a nurse, you cannot do it. It is not what I would call fun, but you can cer-tainly have fun doing it. You will not become wealthy doing it, at least not with dollars. Yet we do it for a lifetime. It’s hard to explain, or even understand. But you do it every day, and love it.

An honor to serve It is such an honor to have
served as your president these last two years. I love seeing everyone at our seminars, espe-cially those of you who have been MASPAN members for many, many years. It makes me so proud to see so many peri-anesthesia nurses who keep abreast of the ever expanding list of treatments, medications and
methods of practice that help our patients heal faster and with fewer negative effects. I believe that MASPAN is one of the best ASPAN components with the most qualified members and the luckiest patients in the country!
Thank you, Kathy DeLeskey

The Art of Conferencing
Both an art and science The beauty of nursing is that it is
considered both an art and a science. The science part being the technical medical data associated with a diag-nosis, the art part being the humanis-tic and holistic care of the patient. The successful patient experience includes equal doses of art and sci-ence. The same can be said for con-ference participation. The obvious piece of conferencing involves a di-dactic portion of attending sessions, listening to the speakers, poster pres-entations, and reviewing Power-Points. There is another more subtle component of conferencing and that is the “art” portion. It is the humanis-tic element that you will not find in the conference program but may be the most satisfying part of your ex-perience.
Unique chance to interact The humanistic piece of confer-
encing is the “art” involving interac-tions with other attendees that pro-vides the expanded view of your spe-cialty. The arena of many partici-pants, who are dedicated to a spe-cialty, gathered in one venue offers the unique chance to interact. This interaction is the crux of the human-istic portion. It takes effort, trust, and self-confidence to take the plunge and begin interacting with a person you do not know. However you DO know something about this stranger, they are interested in the topic of the conference or they would not be present. When you put your-self out there you will find many sur-prising commonalities. The technique to enter into this relationship is easy and can be used at any time such as
standing in line for a meal or visiting the vendors. Another simple idea is to sit next to a person who is sitting by themselves. Strike up a conversa-tion by inquiring if this is the first time they have attended a conference. Introductory information about your-self can set them at ease and offer a topic of mutual interest.
Benefits are vast
The benefits of participating in the “art” of conferencing cannot be exaggerated. You will find a person
with perhaps a best practice idea for your unit or a common issue that validates that your struggle is not an isolated incident. A camaraderie may develop leading to a future profes-sional relationship. Learning from one another can be just as informa-tive as listening to content experts at the podium. The benefits are vast and the base knowledge gained from one another is the best part of confer-encing. Try it!

Intrigued by NIWI Upon reflection, I realize it’s
been five years since I started as the Governmental Affairs Chair for MASPAN. I had been on the ASPAN Governmental Affairs Committee for a couple of years and was very intrigued by the Nurse in Washington Internship (NIWI). In the summer of 2009, I applied for and received the AS-PAN scholarship to attend the NIWI in March of 2010.
Learn about legislative process
At NIWI, there were nurses from all over the country and many different nursing specialties
and we were all there to learn more about the legislative process. Jennifer Kilgore and I, as the AS-PAN scholarship winners, were privileged to spend time with AS-PAN President Kim Kraft. It was an action-packed few days where we learned a lot, especially from the legislative aides.
Service on ASPAN GA SWT
I have remained on the AS-PAN Governmental Affairs Stra-tegic Work Team (SWT). I enjoy meeting with other nurses to net-work and learn what is going on in other regions of the country at the ASPAN National Conference.
ASPAN publication helpful The Governmental Affairs
Primer at www.aspan.org is a great resource to learn more about the legislative process. It outlines how you, as a nurse, can be more aware of how what happens on Beacon Hill and Capital Hill will affect you, your practice and your family. Some of the issues that are current hot topics are staffing ra-
tios, patient safety and funding for nursing education. Opportunity to serve
Consider joining me on MAS-PAN’s Governmental Affairs Committee and feel free to discuss your thoughts with me at MAS-PAN’s spring conference in March.

gery, their siblings and families. The tour begins in pre-op hold-ing area where the children are able to dress Surgi-Sam for sur-gery, experience the operating room and PACU. There is also a short movie to reinforce the experience and answer ques-tions. She also reconnects with the children and their families of the day of surgery, providing complete connected care. Last year during PeriAnesthesia Nurse Awareness Week (PANAW), Cindy took this pro-gram to a nearby day care cen-ter. A great success, they would like this program to be presented on a yearly basis. This is an op-portunity to showcase a quality service and build a caring rela-tionship with the community.
Professional certification Over the past year Cindy has
taken professional accountabil-ity to advance her professional practice and became certified as a CAPA. She also maintains her certification in BLS, ACLS and PALS. Cindy has served on our Unit Based Council (UBC) as the chairperson and been a part of the Nursing Practice Council. Professional organizations
She is a member of the AS-PAN and MASPAN. Cindy is very active with MASPAN at-tending the fall and spring con-ferences and taking part in the fund-raising for the organiza-tion. She is also a member of the New England Ambulatory Nurses Network (NEANN).
Dedicated and experienced Cindy has thirty-five years of
nursing experience with twenty-two years of experience in the preoperative area and PACU. Many of Cindy’s co-workers feel privileged and honored to work with such a dedicated and experienced nurse, valuing her easy going demeanor and great sense of humor that promotes a positive working environment.
Kids in Surgery Program Cindy is part of a research-
based program, “Preparing Your Child for Surgery” that reduces fear and anxiety of the unknown. Cindy has taken ownership of the program and meets with families and their children to present the “Kids in Surgery Program” with Surgi-Sam the monkey. This is a hands-on ex-perience for children having sur-

Professionally involved Christine has been a BSN, RN
for thirty-three years and has spent the last twenty-seven of them working in her specialty as a preoperative, PACU and pread-mission testing nurse. Christine has been dual certified as a CAPA and CPAN nurse for over 12 years. She is an active mem-ber of ASPAN and MASPAN. She has also served on the VT/NH Board as the Education C h a i r p e r s o n . Quality Improvement
Christine is our Quality Im-provement representative and is active on this committee present-ing the results of audits and data collection. She is diligent, accu-rate and clearly disseminates all the information from the commit-tee meetings to staff meetings on a one to one basis so that every-one has a good understanding of
what data she is collecting and the purpose for its collection. Most recently she collaboratively developed a project looking at preoperative surgical wait times for patients receiving and not re-ceiving a block.
BLS instructor
Christine is also a BLS in-structor and usually facilitates most of the staff at the Surgery Center to maintain their certifica-tion. She also volunteers her time in the community teaching BLS. Christine also has her ACLS, and PALS certification that are re-q u i r e d f o r h e r j o b . Do Your Job!
Christine’s positive attitude and approach to looking at the glass always half full is an asset to our unit. Her motto is “DO YOUR JOB!!!” She is usually able to unwind the Gordian knot.

MASPAN Hosts Certification Review with Maureen McLaughlin
On February 7, 2015, 48 nurses attended Maureen McLaughlin’s Certification Re-view at Lowell General Hospital in Lowell, MA. Part of the seminar included a celebra-tion of PANAW with cake for the attendees. Winners of door prizes were new member Stephanie Bardzilowski, an ASPAN satchel; the ASPAN 2015-2017 Perianesthesia Nursing Standards, Practice Recommendations and Interpretive Statements were won by Joanne Lavengood, who also won a ceramic ASPAN traveler coffee mug; and Nancy Wyrebek, who also won an ASPAN lunch bag. Christine Perry won an ASPAN Redi-Ref, and Nicole Surette won an ASPAN ceramic traveler coffee mug.
The overall consensus, the seminar was GREAT! New member Diane Forgit from UMass Memorial Medical Center and new to the PACU, attended the seminar to in-crease her knowledge, found it very helpful, “It was really great, I learned a lot, and Maureen was wonderful!” And from Nancy Wyrebek, “Maureen McLaughlin is in-credible!!!”
Just a reminder, Maureen presents her certification review on a regular basis, watch for upcoming opportunities to attend. Although designed as a certification prep guide, Maureen provides a good basic review of perianesthesia nursing that would benefit both the novice perianesthesia nurse and a refresher for the veteran nurse. Check it out!

The economy As the news industry pre-
pared for the spectacular event of the 49th Super Bowl through its use of high tech media out-lets and expensive advertising campaigns, I found myself at-tracted to a very different type of article. Realizing that long after the whistle blows and the football is temporarily laid to rest; life outside the stadium goes on. The economy, with its daily fluctuations and uncer-tainty has longer lasting impli-cations.
Optimistic prediction The headline that caught my
attention was, “Carmakers may reach near-record sales in 2015.”1 That is quite an optimis-tic prediction with only one month of the New Year behind us. Reasons given for this po-tentially beneficial event are confidence in the economy with low interest rates and low gas prices, which are giving buyers high confidence. Warmer than usual temperatures and holiday discounts added to this healthy growth. Whether purchasing a first compact vehicle, upgrading
Page 16 MAYFLOWER
The success of a well-written newspaper article
to a larger SUV or leaning to-ward a lower-priced, luxury model, the mentality is undenia-bly positive. Additionally, lar-ger discounts in competitive markets, such as midsize cars will likely push sales upward. Recent levels had not kept pace with double-digit increases in 2011 and 2012. Winning com-panies are those who appeal to a diverse customer base to include young families and baby boom-ers.
Brilliant idea
As I finished perusing this article, I was struck with a bril-liant idea. Although, I was
somewhat contemplating the benefit of trading in my 10-year old Honda Civic, a greater, far-reaching vision was pushing its way through my brain and onto the computer keys. I found my-self asking the question of “Why can’t perianesthesia leaders reach near-record members on the MASPAN Board of Direc-tors in 2015?” Reasons I can easily offer for this potential spike in interest to serve are low membership rates, low number of competing organizations and above par growth and develop-ment experiences.

Benefits can be realized If you wish to gauge the
“temperature” within our board-room, you can attend a future meeting. You will find it com-fortable, warm and inviting. Dis-counts don’t occur just at certain times of the year in MASPAN, but more on a routine basis. They come in the form of free help and support in composing an article, designing a poster or preparing a lecture. Bottom line benefits can be realized from active participa-tion, consistent presence and willingness to serve.
Satisfaction beyond measure
At the end of the day, as my mind races toward the time when our levels of participation are at an all time high and the interest in serving successfully competes
with busy schedules, I am eter-nally grateful to the members of the present board. They should all be included in a book similar to the Kelly Blue Book. It has projected that car/ truck sales could stay in the 17 million dol-lar range for the next 2 to 3 years. Any professional analyst would also agree that our mighty band of MASPAN leaders will continue to give of their time and talent with a record number of hours. They will offer members a down payment on advancing one’s career through quality edu-cational offerings. Be sure to pay attention to the advertise-ments by our committee chairs now and in the future as we so-licit your ideas and request your input. Who knows what may happen when you step forward to

ABPANC News
New “Nursing Passion in Action” Award ABPANC is introducing a new unit-level award to recognize CPAN and CAPA certified nurses who go beyond their normal job responsibilities to provide outstanding patient care. This award is designed for perianesthesia nurse managers to use in their unit and reward “Nursing Passion in Action” with a card to be posted in the unit, plus a chance to win a $25 gift certificate. ABPANC is providing a poster and 12 award cards to every hospital and surgical center in our records. We hope that each participating hospital will select one CPAN or CAPA nurse each month and fax a copy of the award to us so the recipient can be entered into the drawing for $25 gift certificates. Each month ABPANC will randomly select 10 winners to receive $25 to be used at the CPAN/CAPA online store. 12-week Study Plan This comprehensive 12-week study plan organizes subject matter into topics that can be reviewed in approxi-mately four hours per week. It outlines key areas of study and groups them into three basic categories of Physiological, Behavioral-Cognitive, and Safety needs.
We have listened to you and responded with a new Practice Exam format that includes a reference to the cor-rect answer for all Practice Exam questions. Each practice exam contains 50 questions. Effective August 19, 2013, every Practice Exam question, whether answered correctly or incorrectly, will include at least one reference (including page number) for the correct answer. A summary page of the total score and all references will be provided, along with the Pass/Fail score for each section of the exam.
