We also had our inaugural Evening of Art. Our Arts Council, chaired by Alan Griffin, did a lot of work in putting together this great event. It was well attended and those who came enjoyed chalk art, live music, puppetry, dance, and handmade crafts.

These events are a wonderful way to bring our community together with opportunities to enjoy each other’s company. We’ve certainly had a summer full of fun.

Week of Service

As the nation commemorated the twentieth anniversary of 9/11, we had numerous groups engaged in service projects throughout West Haven. There was maintenance and painting at our arena, bat house construction, trail clearing, and a mural painted in one of our pedestrian tunnels. Over the course of that week, hundreds of volunteers participated in making a difference in their community. Thank you to all!

Staff Changes

I want to welcome two new additions to our West Haven staff. Our 2021-22 budget included the discontinuation of our Planner/Engineer contract. That contracted service became two new employee positions.

Shari Phippen is our new Community Development Director. Shari comes to the City with 10+ years of community development experience. Most recently, she was a staffer in the office of Rep. Blake Moore, West Haven’s Congressional representative. When she’s not writing and rewriting zoning code, she’s usually watching baseball, reading books about World War II or making homemade bread.

Edward Mignone joins our team as the City Engineer. Ed has masters and bachelor degrees in Civil Engineering from The Cooper Union in New York City. His professional career has included time as a water/wastewater consultant and municipal consultant. Most recently he was the municipal engineer for the Borough of Fort Lee, New Jersey for 12½ years.

For the past twenty five years, Steve Anderson has been a vital part of planning and engineering in our city. He has assisted staff, and elected and appointed officials in understanding the importance of planning for the future. His expertise has been invaluable. He has been instrumental in garnering millions of dollars in grant funding for West Haven as we’ve expanded our infrastructure, including roads, parks, and trails. I wish him the very best in his future endeavors and thank him for his years dedicated to West Haven.

Emotion Coaching is a five-step method that builds emotional intelligence and creates positive, long-lasting effects for children from toddlers to teens. Easy to learn, and used by parents, educators, and care -givers, it supports kids through life’s ups and downs. Here are the five essential steps of Emotion Coaching:

• Be aware of your child’s emotion • Recognize your child’s expression of emotion as a perfect moment for connecting and teaching • Listen with empathy and validate your child’s feelings • Help your child learn to label their emotions with words

Set limits when you are helping your child to solve problems or deal with upsetting situations appropriately

Your child’s ability to understand and regulate their emotions will help them to succeed in life. They will be more self-confident, perform better in social and academic situations, and even become physically healthier.

Emotion Coaching is a 6-week program. Fremont 5 CTC will be hosting an Emotion Coaching Training starting Monday, October 11 th from 6-7:30 at Hooper City Office. To register for free visit: https://www.weberhs.net/prevent-emotion-coaching-form OR email

To report non-emergencies, you should contact the dispatch center at 801-629-8221, instead of dialing 9-1-1, so that the emergency line will be available for those who need it. Non-emergencies may include noise ordinance violations, animal services issues, or parking problems. Save the dispatch number so it's handy when these non-emergency instances occur. Thanks for doing your part to make sure that the 9-1-1 operators are available to help those who need them!
