Purpose
As we recognize the great progress that has been made to support human rights initiatives
throughout Newark, we also feel that there is still much to be done. Community needs for
affordable housing, crime reduction, creating safe spaces, and education, coupled with conce
about the current statelevel fiscal climate, compel us to facilitate a conversation that is focus
the continued revitalization of Newark. It is imperative to hold this conversation to consider t
protection and enhancement of human rights for the citizens that make these revitalization e
possible.
The Newark LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning) Concerns Advisory
Commission and the Newark Pride Alliance (NPA) will hosting a Community Conversation with
2010 Mayoral Candidates in advance of the May elections. We are invested in carrying on ou
communitys history of facilitating a dialogue based on social issues, such as the NewarkEsse
Pride Coalition and Newark Pride Alliance have done for candidates in recent elections and w
establishment of the annual safe spaces conference. We aim to provide a forum for candidate
present their vision for enriching this tradition by strengthening human rights within the city
for citizens to provide suggestions and to raise critical concerns.
The Community Conversation is expected to host an audience of roughly 100 communitymembers and various media outlets. Candidates will be asked a combination of prescreened
audiencesubmitted questions, all of which will be delivered by the event moderator. NPA wi
provide prescreened questions to the candidates in advance of the event. Candidates are ask
directly respond to the questions as presented, however, there will be table space for promo
materials at the event. We respectfully ask that candidates refrain from otherwise distributin
materials during the event. Our hope is that this Community Conversation will serve as the fir
many in our efforts to provide means for elected officials and the LGBTQ citizenry to maintain
dialogue that will help the Newark community to promulgate, prioritize, and plan efforts tow
the advancement of human rights in our city
