VIKING NATION NEWSLETTER
May, 2016
“What a great time to
be a Viking!”
I can’t believe another year is almost over. What a great time to be a Viking! We had a successful year,
both athletically and academically, but are looking for more hardware in the future. Just in the past few
weeks, Viking Nation has had a variety of honors. Mazama students Sara Barkley and Hannah Levesque
were recently recognized at the local United Way volunteer of the year awards luncheon. Sara won the
youth division! Also, staff member Stephanie Harris and Aspire coordinator Jon Johnson were awarded in
the education division! Our students and staff volunteer an amazing amount of hours to make our school
and community a better place. Our FBLA students had a great state competition and several of them have
qualified for the national competition. Mazama will also be sending our band to the state tournament, after
qualifying a few weeks ago at the Ross Ragland Theater. Viking Nation had two staff representatives for
the Crystal Apple awards last week. Laura Nickerson was our teacher representative and Patty Rajnus
was or classified winner. Congratulations to them for a job well done! On the 27th of April Viking Nation will
have our first cohort of students in the STEM&M program sign their participation letters with Mazama and
Oregon Tech. This is an exciting time for the school and district to be kicking off such an awesome pro-
gram. A few summer activities are in the planning stages for the little Vikings to be. Registration is now
open for the 2016 Mazama STEM&M Camp (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Medicine) as
well as Mazama's Creativity Camp (Art, Foods, Music and Theatre). Both camps are grades 1-6. Camp
dates are August 1st-5th at Mazama High School. Check the school web page for more information.
Have a great summer!

eating a delicious dinner at the Yard House.

Great job everyone!
Financial Reality Fair Comes to Mazama “The Reality Fair was a great simulator for real life. It taught me we need to live within our means and only purchase things if
we need them or have the money for them. I will value the things I learned here and use them in my life after high school.” Ian
Goetz
The Mazama Business Department and Pacific Crest Credit Union teamed up to host the first annual Financial Reality Fair. We
brought together 25 volunteers from local business and industry along with 50 Mazama students to experience what it’s like to
live a financial life at about age 25.
Fifty Mazama students participated in the financial simulation including Danilea Garcia who said, “I learned having a budget is
more important than I thought it would be.”
The Financial Reality Fair is a 2 hour activity where students are provided a career and budget worksheet requiring them to live
within their monthly salary while paying for basics such as housing, utilities, transportation, clothing, and food. Of course, there
are many temptations for additional spending and students must learn to balance their wants and needs to live on their own.
After they visited all the business booths, students balanced their budgets, and then sat down with a financial counselor to re-
view their current financial status. The fair is a unique opportunity for each student to experience some of the financial chal-
lenges they will face when they start life on their own post-high school. Jose Perez who helped out at the Transportation booth
and a volunteer from Pacific Crest thought students’ eyes were opened by the realness of the activity. “This really makes my
day to have made an impact on many that had not thought about all of the little things that are involved with “growing up”, said
Perez.
