WashingtonClean, crisp air, bright blue skies and lush green forests; Mazama Washington is the picture perfect escape into nature. Located in Okanogan County, rural Washington provides a peaceful retreat from hectic city life. Mazama offers endless outdoor possibilities during any time of the year. During the Summer months the close proximity to multiple mountain ranges, as well as the Methow River offers countless activities. In the Winter, although heavy snow fall sometimes causes limited road access, outdoor activities are not limited; cross country skiing, snow shoeing and snow mobileing are local favorites.

TerrainNorth Cascades National Park, Liberty Bell Mountain and the Pasayten Wilderness are readily available with abundant trails and look out points. The highest road in Washington is also within driving distance, offering beautiful panoramic views. Mazama does receive fair amounts of snow during the winter months; this often restricts access to some roads. If this vacation home were to be used during such times, alternative means of transportation may be necessary (four wheel drive and/or a snow mobile).

AccessFrom Seattle: in the late Spring to late Fall, the recommended route is driv-ing north on I-5 to Burlington, then east on Hwy 20 (also known as the “North Cascades Highway”) to Mazama.

In the Winter either Highway 2 over Stevens Pass, or I-90 over Snoqualmie Pass and then US 97 north over Blewett Pass, to Wenatchee. From Wenatchee, head north on Highway 97 up the Columbia River to Pateros and turn up the Methow River on Hwy 153, which intersects with Hwy 20 at Twisp. Continue west on Hwy 20. Mazama is 15 miles west of Winthrop on Highway 20.

From Spokane: go west on Highway 2 to Wilbur, head to Pateros via Grand Coulee. At Pateros drive up the Methow River on Hwy 153, which intersects with Hwy 20 at Twisp. Continue west on Hwy 20. Mazama is 15 miles west of Winthrop on Highway 20.

FAQ’sDoes Okanogan County plan under the Growth Management Act?Okanogan County is not mandated to plan under the Growth Management Act. Okanogan County's population is below the mandated limit required to plan under the Act. However, Okanogan County has, through the adoption of current land use codes and planned future revisions to those codes, to follow similar planning and land use guidelines as those required by the act. What are the requirements for installing a septic system? The Office of Planning and Development does not administer septic or well regulations. For information on septic and wells, contact the Okanogan County Health District. What can I do with my property? For any given piece of property in Okanogan County there is a great number of things which may be done, given all pos-sible permutations and combinations of structures, uses, property characteristics, and property location. Okanogan County is divided up into fifteen zoning districts. For each of these districts, the Zoning Code (see District Use Chart Okanogan County Zoning Code, Title 17) lists approximately one hundred different uses which are designated as permitted, permitted by Conditional Use Permit, permitted by Planned Development, permitted by Binding Site Plan, or prohibited. It is impor-tant to note that even if a use is “permitted,” appropriate development permits and a site analysis are still required. If you need assistance determining the zoning district for a piece of property, simply call (509/422-7160) or E-Mail the Office of Planning and Development and have the Assessor’s ten-digit parcel number ready. If you are considering a specific devel-opment idea for a specific piece of property, detailed feedback may be obtained through the site analysis process, even if you are not ready to apply for a building permit.

This design was inspired by nature and its tendency to ‘fight back’ against man made ‘intrusions’ like brick pathways, metal light posts and concrete. I was inspired by the thought provoking sight of moss overtaking a brick pathway and ivy climbing the side of a building. This building will strive to blend with nature rather than interrupt it. Large windows will reflect the surrounding trees and ‘blend’ the building into its surroundings. The building will also be built upward in order to take up as little earth as possible. It will be oriented to optimize the use of natural light. The theme will be continued in the interior design aspects, using as many recycled and sustainable materials as possible.
