MBA International Management (with Finance)

MBA International Management (with Sustainability)

Our MBA will provide you with:

In addition to this we have an internationally diverse academic and student body which also allows for greater cultural awareness. Our MBA students are usually from at least 15 different countries. This significantly benefits our students, who face an increasingly global economy, where cross-national cultural and social awareness are critical to management action and strategy.

MBA International Management Programme

2

TeachingTeaching takes place through lectures, seminars, workshops, small teams and individual self-directed learning. Drawing on both practice and theory, the interactive link is illustrated between current business issues and management theory.

The MBA International Management programme has been designed to operate to ensure that the material covered by each course is delivered in the most effective manner.

During the autumn term you will study most of the core courses intensively and will be expected to be available from 9am until 6pm, Monday to Friday for all on-campus programme activities. Some evenings may run later due to outside speakers, social events and interactions with other business schools. Any such events will be notified at least seven days in advance.

During the spring term, you will study four elective courses, along with group work, private study and the continuation of your Personal Development Programme. Late working may still be required from time to time.

During the summer term you will work on the Business Consultancy Project, continue with your Personal Development Programme, take examinations and work on your dissertation.

The MBA is renowned for its intensity – you will need to work hard and strictly apply yourself to each course. However, with your previous work experience, you already have a wealth of business knowledge which will set you in good stead. You will learn how to apply your practical business experience to new conceptual approaches and you will also gain wider exposure to the management principles and techniques required to manage challenges presented by the business world. The diversity of students on our MBA International Management programme will help you to put your own experience into context as well developing business networks around the world.

WorkloadOur MBA has been designed specifically to stretch you – the challenge is to respond by developing your personal and analytical skills. You will be committed to a heavy workload and you must be able to meet deadlines for each course, assignment and examination, whilst also attending various MBA events.

Focusing intently on a variety of subjects at a time makes this an extremely rigorous and demanding study experience. You should be prepared to make the required commitment to study for approximately 50 hours a week both during the day and in the evening in order to cover all the assigned course material in this programme.

In addition to your attendance at all classes you are also expected to be present at events designed specifically for your benefit, which complement the MBA programme. These include industry and networking events and students should be fully aware that all elements of the programme will have an impact on their overall grades.

Whether you are returning to study during a career break or continuing with your studies, you will find the programme a challenge. We expect you to meet this challenge, your reward being the satisfaction of graduating from Royal Holloway, University of London.

AssessmentYou will be assessed by examination (three hours long) on the Core courses you have studied for that term. You will also be regularly assessed through in-course projects, conducted as individual or group assignments. These are usually in the form of essays or presentations. The dissertation is a 12,000–15,000 word assignment carried out during the summer.

Learning Support Taught programmes on campus are supported by a virtual learning environment. Resources available to students online may include copies of lecture slides, links to e-journals and past exam papers as well as course outlines.

The academic and professional staff at Royal Holloway are able to provide advice, support and encouragement in practical and academic matters.

LibraryThe Royal Holloway libraries have a collection of over 500,000 books, as well as growing collections of audiovisual materials. Bedford Library has recently been refurbished to offer a range of different working spaces for students. Level 2 is a social learning space, which features group study areas, a café, a tea house, as well as various IT facilities such as data projectors and interactive whiteboards to enable group working. Level 3 has been refurbished to provide a silent study area for students, featuring improved lighting and wireless access. It has an extensive collection of books in the field of Management. The books range from the more traditional fields of finance and accounting, through to marketing and management information systems and the more recent concerns with accountability, both in relation to corporate social responsibility and environmental sustainability.

Bedford library also has a range of print journals but, more importantly, has access to a very wide range of electronic resources. These resources include data sources, such as Business Insights, Mergent Online and Mintel Reports, as well as databases such as Business Source Complete and Science Direct, which contain more academic discussions and analyses of management-related topics. Training on how to use these electronic resources is provided by the Information Consultants in the library, who run both general and subject-specific sessions. Students are also able to borrow books from and access the electronic resources of Senate House Library, the library of the University of London.

Technology

The College supports a number of facilities to help you use IT in support of your degree programme. This includes the facility to connect to College resources both on and off campus. Most of the College’s study bedrooms include data points enabling you to connect your laptop to the internet and College network. You can also use your computer or laptop in most on-campus student accommodation to access some of the most common TV channels and a phone service.

Access to the internet and College network can be gained in many areas on campus using a wireless provision. Situated around the campus are a number of fully equipped PC Labs which offer a range of essential applications that you may require for your degree; with most being open 24/7.

Many College facilities can be accessed remotely. Whether you are working in a PC Lab, your study bedroom, or abroad you have the opportunity to access certain areas, such as your College email, personal disk storage area, and the Moodle virtual learning environment from which you can access a range of learning materials. Additionally, essential library resources can also be accessed, including the Library catalogue and online journals.

To support these facilities, a range of IT related help is available at the College, either remotely via email and the internet, or face-to-face by visiting the Bedford Library Service Desk. For more information about many of the IT facilities available, please visit: www.rhul.ac.uk/Information-Services/Computer-Centre

Internships

As part of the programme we encourage you to undertake a short internship, allowing you to consolidate or gain experience in an area of business that you wish to pursue your career in. Previous students have found this to considerably enrich their learning experience as it provides them with the opportunity to develop industry-specific abilities that in turn contribute to their assessed work. The School

has a dedicated Placements Officer who provides expert advice and support for those MBA students wishing to pursue an internship.

Internships have aided students in gaining the knowledge and skills they require to help increase their employability. Many employers value this experience and often look to their own interns as the best potential candidates for any new positions that may arise within their company.

It is important to note, however, that all candidates will be considered in the round with the judgement of the programme team being applied to all candidates rather than judging applicants on a rigid rules-based approach. Particular attention will be placed on the applicant’s personal statement and in the references supplied with the application. Where used, a GMAT score will be used to contribute to the decision making process but will rarely, if ever, be used as the single reason for the inclusion or exclusion of an applicant. The MBA team will be looking for motivated applicants who have a clear picture of what they will bring to the programme and what they want to achieve from the programme.
