Learning and Teaching Techniques

These are effective methods to ensure that all students have complete understanding of the subject with required insight for application in life. Indian Philosophy of Jnana Yoga gives three step principles of learning. All are essential for complete learning. As the proverb goes - 1. Sravana - I hear and I forget 2. Manana - I read and I remember 3. Nidhidhyasana - I do and I understand

Educational Objectives: Learning process involves following major cognitive domains. In order to make students learn

the subject the characteristics of skill at that level must be observed.

Cognitive Domains to be considered for learning are as -

Cognitive Skill Characteristics of the skill – Students ability

Knowledge Label, list, match, recall, select, state, underline.

Comprehension Describe, explain, interpret, summarize, and paraphrase.

Application Complete, organize, solve, calculate, compute, use.

Analysis Categorize, classify, compare and contrast, Recognise patterns and relationships.

Synthesis Compose, create, formulate, hypothesize, and write.

Evaluation Judge based on criteria, support, conclude.

In division of Yoga and Management, Learning environment is created and learning starts the moment student enter the classrooms. Classrooms have multiple display boards, charts and images to aid visual learning. Open and informal environment within classrooms serves for better pedagogy. Silence and peaceful Campus helps them go deep within themselves and search for the meaning in everything they learn. Student development activities are organised for all programmes including MBA and PhD. It is because of such unique yoga way of life in tune with the nature in Prashanti Kutiram that true growth and ‘Life-Learning’ happens. Following are the guidelines along with the learning and teaching techniques provided for Teachers in Division of Yoga and Management to enhance the learning of students.

Classroom Management: 1. Create a structured classroom. This may include designating separate areas for

group and individual work and centres for reading or art, as well as creating a daily class schedule.

2. Display classroom rules. 3. Post the daily schedule incorporating colour. 4. Provide opportunities for purposeful movement. 5. Develop classroom cues for settling down to work, getting out materials, and

quieting down. 6. Plan for transition times (between subjects or tasks, before and after lunch,

changing classes). 7. Help students organize their materials by using checklists, folders, and

containers to keep materials organized in desks. 8. Visually monitor student activity.

Instructional planning sequence: 1. "I do" (teacher model - what teacher does in class), 2. "We do" (group practice – what teacher and student do in class), and 3. "You do" (individual practice – what student does in class).

Planning instructional methods: 1. Multiple means of representing content (visual and oral strategies), 2. Multiple means of students' expression of content (writing, illustrating, and speaking), 3. Flexible means of engagement as students learn (videos, software, and role-playing).

Learning methods -

Smart Classrooms –

This is information technology enabled classroom environment. We have projector and computer aided presentations, videos. Smart classrooms have interactive multimedia white board and internet connectivity for effective audio-visual techniques of learning.

The flipped classroom - The flipped classroom is a reversal of traditional teaching where students gain first exposure to new material outside of class, usually via reading or lecture videos, and then class time is used to do the harder work of assimilating that knowledge through strategies such as problem-solving, discussion or debates.

Page 21: MBA Programme Curriculum Booklet - Swami …svyasa.edu.in/.../02/MBA-Programme-Curriculum-Booklet.pdf1. Universal Message Bhagawad Geeta – by Swami Ranganathananda..... 81 2. Srimad

MBA Programme Curriculum Booklet

S-VYASA YOGA UNIVERSITY Page 21

Collaborative learning: This often occurs in a class session after students are introduced to course material through readings or videos before class, and/or through instructor lectures. Similar to the idea that two or three heads are better than one, many instructors have found that through peer instruction, students teach each other by addressing misunderstandings and clarifying misconceptions.

Active learning Active learning requires students to participate in class, as opposed to sitting and listening quietly. Strategies include, but are not limited to, brief question-and-answer sessions, discussion integrated into the lecture, impromptu writing assignments, hands-on activities and experiential learning events. As you think of integrating active learning strategies into your course, consider ways to set clear expectations, design effective evaluation strategies and provide helpful feedback.

Teaching Techniques -

1. Lecture: Lecture method is effective when learning something for the first time. It is used to -

Presenting new content not available in textbooks. Summarizing disparate points of view into a more cohesive overview.

Focusing the audience on important information.

Lecture steps -

1. Plan the lecture body. It is helpful to chart out your big ideas and develop transition points to link thinks together.

2. Provide examples. Remember to link things the students likely know to things you're trying to teach. Thinking about bridging examples before the lecture will keep your delivery more crisp and focused.

Page 22: MBA Programme Curriculum Booklet - Swami …svyasa.edu.in/.../02/MBA-Programme-Curriculum-Booklet.pdf1. Universal Message Bhagawad Geeta – by Swami Ranganathananda..... 81 2. Srimad

MBA Programme Curriculum Booklet

S-VYASA YOGA UNIVERSITY Page 22

3. Summarize periodically. Since many students take notes during a lecture, your summaries of presented concepts help student quickly review what they've written to validate their notes (a good technique for reinforcing knowledge retention) or change incorrect interpretations to promote better accuracy.

4. Check for understanding. Lectures shouldn't be one-way. Make sure your students understand what you've presented by asking a few direct questions about the big concepts presented (from your initial flowchart.) If you'd like to layer a bit of technology to your lecture, this is a good way to use student response systems (clickers) to anonymously graph students' responses to key quiz-like questions about major concepts.

Lecture slides:

Lecture should contain decent content with time frame. Plan a beginning, middle and end for slides and they should not be more than 30 for an hour of lecture.

Beginning: The introductory slides should cover your goal for the lecture and state any important things students should walk away with. This is a good time to link the students' current knowledge to the concepts you plan to introduce.

Middle: Use the same four guideposts mentioned above for in-class lectures: plan the body, provide examples, summarize periodically, and check for understanding.

End: Re-state everything you presented at the beginning (goals, links to current knowledge). This is also a good time to direct students to online activities that reinforce your lecture's content such as an online discussion forum.

2. Discussion: Discussions may take the form of the Group Discussions, Brain storming, panel discussions, Mock interviews, group presentation, Debate competitions etc. Some common points to be remembered by students are as below –

1. Establish goals for the discussion: Determine goals based on an assessment of what material students already understand and the areas that they need to explore.

2. Decide what you want students to learn from the discussion. Do you want them to apply newly learned concepts, mull over novel subject matter and learn to analyze arguments critically, or hear each other’s points of view?

Page 23: MBA Programme Curriculum Booklet - Swami …svyasa.edu.in/.../02/MBA-Programme-Curriculum-Booklet.pdf1. Universal Message Bhagawad Geeta – by Swami Ranganathananda..... 81 2. Srimad

MBA Programme Curriculum Booklet

S-VYASA YOGA UNIVERSITY Page 23

3. These goals are not mutually exclusive but they require different types of leadership on your part and different responses on the part of your students (see below for detailed strategies).

4. Communicate clear expectations to students: Tell students what you expect the discussions to accomplish. Hand out study questions before your discussion, so students can think about concepts or respond in writing.

5. Clarify and summarize key points during the discussion: Many instructors write out notes to assist them in keeping the discussion on track and they are willing to moderate and intervene.

6. Others prefer to leave enough time for their supplementary comments at the end of the discussion. In either case, a brief summary that highlights the main points of the discussion is a good idea.

3. Question and Answer (Q&A): Curiosity and Questioning forms first step of learning and this inquiring attitude forms necessary quality of a good student.

Students must learn to question everything they don’t understand and find the answers from all sources including teachers themselves. They must think beyond the classroom and search for the answers. This forms the basis of learning through Question and answer.

Teachers’ can ask questions related to topics of learning and students also ask questions to know more.

I. Student’s questions -

1. Students ask questions when probed by teachers in middle of the class. Sometimes even at the end Q&A time is allotted, usually when topic has been covered. Teachers further answer and clarify the concept.

2. One of the ways to measure the learning level of the student and to judge their inclination and interest in the subject. Satisfactory answers by teachers will be effectively process the knowledge base of students.

3. Questions should be specific and seeking the genuine answer. Students are encouraged to ask small and fundamental questions with respect to the topic and may also try to find application of any theoretical concept.

4. Teacher himself learns more about the subject from students. In case he does not have complete answer to satisfy the student, he can motivate the group for self study and search for the answer to discuss the issue in next class.

II. Teachers’ Questions - 1. Teachers direct questions to the entire class rather than to one individual and

willing to wait for an answer. Wait at least 30 seconds before repeating or

Page 24: MBA Programme Curriculum Booklet - Swami …svyasa.edu.in/.../02/MBA-Programme-Curriculum-Booklet.pdf1. Universal Message Bhagawad Geeta – by Swami Ranganathananda..... 81 2. Srimad

MBA Programme Curriculum Booklet

S-VYASA YOGA UNIVERSITY Page 24

changing your question. This gives students time to think and shows them that you care more about their learning than about the speed of their responses.

2. Some teachers like to ask students to take a few minutes to write down their

individual responses to a question before discussing as a whole class. This gives each student an opportunity to think about and respond to the topic. Then, as discussion begins, each student has at least one idea to offer and feels better prepared to respond.

3. Students gain control of the learning process through studying course

material outside of class, using readings “inverting” a classroom, this approach seeks to preserve the value of lecture (expertise and custom delivery), while freeing up precious in-person class time for active learning strategies.

This method is used more for PhD students as they are investigating a new research area and have many questions related to subject under study.

4. Case Study Method:

A case study is narrative or description of an event or facts written with a view to arise a problem solving case. It has high level of structured way and high level of feedback as well.

a. When students are presented with a case, they place themselves in the role of the decision maker.

b. As they read through the situation and identify the problem they are faced with, they are searching for solutions.

c. The next step is to perform the necessary analysis- examining the causes and considering alternative courses of actions to come to a set of recommendations.

d. SWOT analysis of the situation is first step towards the analysis of alternative solutions available.

Page 25: MBA Programme Curriculum Booklet - Swami …svyasa.edu.in/.../02/MBA-Programme-Curriculum-Booklet.pdf1. Universal Message Bhagawad Geeta – by Swami Ranganathananda..... 81 2. Srimad

S-VYASA YOGA UNIVERSITY Page 25

e. To get the most out of cases, students read and reflect on the case, and then meet in learning teams before class.

f. In class, they study the case under the questioning and guidance of the professor.

g. Students probe underlying issues, compare different alternatives, and finally, suggest courses of action in light of the organization's objectives.

h. Students doing 85 percent of the talking, as the professor steers the conversation by making occasional observations and asking questions.

i. Class participation is so important to the learning model. Case study material is given before hand and student have to prepare well to effectively participate in classroom discussion.

j. Students are evaluated through level and depth of their discussion.

5. Student’s writing As a faculty member, lecturer might work with student’s writing in a number of ways: short-answer exams, essays, journals, blog posts, research assignments and so on. He may also take your students through the writing process by assigning drafts, encouraging peer response through structure or informal exercises, and using writing to encourage active learning. The following suggestions will help to make your work easier in each of these roles and will also help your students be more successful with their writing.

Assigning writing: Taking students through the writing process is crucial. Whether or not you have developed the writing, students will be more successful if they know well in advance what is expected. The writing/ desk work assignment should contain the following information:

1. Purpose: What is the goal of the assignment? Why are students being asked to write it?

2. Audience: Who are students writing to? You? Each other? A specific audience? 3. Grading criteria: Include a summary of the criteria you will use to grade the

writing. 4. Models: What have students encountered in their readings or lectures that

illustrates the kind of thinking and writing you expect? 5. Format: Are there any special requirements? 6. Length, due date: Place this information prominently on the assignment sheet

6. Desk research:

At least one desk research per course is planned for MBA and PhD students.

a) Students can use this method for study of any new emerging topic for which text books or reference books may not have sufficient information.

Page 26: MBA Programme Curriculum Booklet - Swami …svyasa.edu.in/.../02/MBA-Programme-Curriculum-Booklet.pdf1. Universal Message Bhagawad Geeta – by Swami Ranganathananda..... 81 2. Srimad

MBA Programme Curriculum Booklet

S-VYASA YOGA UNIVERSITY Page 26

b) Desk research is basically involved in collecting data from existing resources hence it is often considered a low cost technique as compared to field research.

c) Desk research is very effective and can be conducted in starting phase of market research as it is quite quick and cheap and most of the basic information could be easily fetched which can be used as benchmark in the research process.

d) Management students are given with organisational and industry profile studies through desk research.

e) Desk research activity is evaluated based on report and presentation by student. There are basically two types of desk research techniques:

1. Internal Desk Research - Internal desk research can be treated as the most reasonable starting point of research for any organization. The main advantage here in performing internal desk research is that it involves internal and existing organizational resources to organize the collected data in such a way that it is not only efficient but also usable.

2. External Desk Research - External Desk Research involves research done outside the organizational boundaries and collecting relevant information. These outside resources are described below:

a. Online Desk Research - There is incredible amount of data available online on internet. It’s important for organization to be information specific while fetching out this information as there are billions of pages available on internet. There could be two approaches for digging out the relevant information from internet, one is directly browsing the specific information from industrial, marketing or business sites and extracting the information out of these sites..

b. Government published data - Government usually publishes a great extent of data online that can be used in the research process. This data is related to social, financial and economical aspects. The government websites are mostly free to access and contains most prominent information. Thus, this could be the cheapest medium of gathering the information.

c. Customer desk research - One of the best and most prominent ways of extracting information for research is directly communicating with existing or prospect participants. The feedback and information provided by participants is the most accurate and useful data which can be used most effectively in the further process of research.

7. Student’s Presentation:

Power Point presentation should be structured and should have a beginning, middle and an end.

Students should consider following:

Who are the audience? What is the content requirement for

the topic? What points do I want to get across? How much time have I got?

Page 27: MBA Programme Curriculum Booklet - Swami …svyasa.edu.in/.../02/MBA-Programme-Curriculum-Booklet.pdf1. Universal Message Bhagawad Geeta – by Swami Ranganathananda..... 81 2. Srimad

MBA Programme Curriculum Booklet

S-VYASA YOGA UNIVERSITY Page 27

What visual aids are available?

1. Introduction:

Welcome the audience. Say what your presentation will be about: the aims and objectives. The introduction should catch the attention. Perhaps a provocative statement or

a humorous anecdote

2. The Middle should outline your argument or develop your story

In five minutes you will only have time for two or three main points and allow everything else to support these. List your main headings and any key phrases you will use.

Don't try to say pack too much content in or you will talk non- stop trying to get all your content and the audience will switch off with information overload long before the end.

Use graphics or anecdotes to add variety.

3. Conclusion:

Briefly summarise your main points. Answer any questions. Thank the audience for listening. Look at the audience again, smile and slow

down. The end should be on a strong or positive note.

Presentations form frequent activity in management world and effective presentations can become stepping stones for the career progressions.

8. Practical Activities –

a) Practical classes – These are meant to be in the form of demonstration by instructors and two groups are made to practice. One group has its pair student in other group and he observes corrects while practicing. This is mainly applicable for Yoga practice sessions but also works best for ability enhancement courses like Spiritual culturing of emotions and Spiritual Unfoldment.

b) Volunteer Field work – aimed at inculcating the service attitude can also be learning activity with diverse human experiences. Stress and emotional balance, creativity and applied innovative techniques.

c) Role play Simulations – Any organisational or business problem is simulated in the form of certain constraint and students themselves play the role of managers or employees. This is very useful for behavioural.

d) Public Speech – students will be asked to deliver a speech on any topic. These topics may be from social or business field. It also provides with public speaking skills and stage courage. Crucial for managers of tomorrow.

e) Newspaper/Magazine article cut outs – Students are encouraged to maintain a board for pinning the articles from newspaper and magazines

Page 28: MBA Programme Curriculum Booklet - Swami …svyasa.edu.in/.../02/MBA-Programme-Curriculum-Booklet.pdf1. Universal Message Bhagawad Geeta – by Swami Ranganathananda..... 81 2. Srimad

to display for all. This keeps everyone updated with current affairs of Business and economics.

f) Home work – it involves reading, analysis and write up on any topic learnt or to be taught.

g) Library hours – these are used to promote reading culture. Students should read as much as possible from various taxt books and reference books. They need to prepare for the topic to be taught next day and come prepared with discussion points.

9. Self Study and study circles:

Though it may be ignored by students and academicians, self study comprises effective learning and teaching tool. Self study can be carried out through individual alone or in peer groups. These groups are called as study circles. Students are divided into multiple groups comprising fast and slow learners. Academically brilliant students who have ability to explain the concepts are made as group leaders. These groups facilitate the learning but students are also advised to learn alone wherever necessary. These solitude hours are the most delicate when student is alone in deep thoughts to search for meaning in concepts learnt.

This technique is effective with Spiritual and scriptural content of the course when being alone, looking within is more important than discussion.

This should involve following steps –

1. Listening - Listening to the concept being taught (by teacher directly or through audio/video lectures) by prominent teachers/scholars/philosophers and gurus.

2. Contemplating – Deep thinking and critical thinking with analysis of the subject to know all angles for the study.

3. Experimenting – this involves the application of the learning by doing the activity. Meditation and practice of Advanced Yoga techniques are effectively learnt this way. All these techniques are designed to maximise the learning. They are implemented with learner centric approach rather than teacher centric. Course faculty are facilitators and guide in this process as this is essentially a self paced learning.
