As I sit down to write this it is the last day in 2011 and for the cattlemen its been a “rewarding year”. The return of good prices for all classes of cattle has renewed the optimism that all cattlemen have naturally etched in their DNA.

Solid, committed, dedicated, capable and clear thinking cattlemen have “weathered the storm”. Calf prices this year were not just good but very good, and we’ve got bred cows bringing $1400-1800 all across the west. What a difference a year makes and what a remarkable breath of fresh air for an industry that really needs a break.

The best part is we are all poised for some serious “good times”. Cow numbers across all beef producing countries are the lowest in 50 years. The current price levels are where they are with a high Canadian dollar, high feed costs, an economic down turn and a restricted U.S border. This is real, it’s solid and almost nothing can stand in the way of at least a decade of prosperity, We have all come through 10 years in the cattle business that most of us would sooner forget. It was never pretty but it was survivable.

For eight years we have advised out customers to “lay in the weeds and wait” and to own as many cattle as they could. NOW we have a lean profitable, well founded cow business destined to “ROAR” for years. The market fundamentals are perfect; its going to be fun and profitable for us all.

Over the last few years we have all witnessed a “tidal wave” of change, as our cow-calf industry has lowered its production costs. Later calving, extended grazing, swath grazing, bale grazing, you name it. Clear thinking, hard nosed cattlemen have figured our how to let a “cow be a cow” and take advantage of what she can do. We’ll all make more this time around... Now... if you are a serious long term cattleman, the thing to do is own as many cattle as you can handle and rebuild your equity.

Our fall here on the ranch has been unbelievably mild, we even had a “brown Christmas” (I only remember two of those). We have had an incredibly busy summer and fall. We held “Canada’s Cow Sale” on December 10th. It was an unqualified success from end to end. We sold nearly 800 females to commercial and purebred cattleman from Alberta to Ontario. As we move ahead we have kept our 500 fall calvers and 200 heifers. 700 head of seedstock females to carry our evolving breeding program into the future. We will ”buy back” a large number of the bull calves from our “cow sale cows”, so our customers won’t see much change in bull numbers and we’ll still be “Canada’s Bull Supplier” for many years to come.

Our December-January at M.C Quantock are normally very busy, but this year with staging two big sales (to sell 1250 head in 50 days) we knew we had a lot on our plate. Three days after our cow sale we had a fire of undetermined origin which destroyed our shop/working barn, crew shack and all our loaders and pickup trucks. In fact at 7AM on December 13 the ranch had one hammer, one pair of fencing pliers and a half pail of nails, every other tool, veterinary supply and most everything we could think of was gone. Needless to say, its been a little busy, but you know in the grand scheme of things its only metal and equipment and can all be replaced. Really just a “darn inconvenience” not a disaster. We processed the last 200 bulls under a tarp with a propane heater, just like the old days when we started the ranch.

Pat and I are doing well, out kids are grown up and thriving. We have a beautiful ranch and excellent young staff to help us run it. Robin, Mark and Lee live and work in Calgary. Cody helps out at home between “cowboy” jobs. Although our kids are not involved everyday in ranch operations I want to acknowledge their contribution. Their help and advice in our marketing efforts particularly at sale time is invaluable. They are slowly dragging their old dad into the computer age, although he would sooner view the world “from between the ears of a horse.”

This winter also marked the passing of my mother Gertie Creech. Mom passed away in her 90th year. She lived a full life, with its share of hardships. Spending the last 30 years in a wheelchair. She never complained and was upbeat and mentally sharp until the end. As my cousin Doug said in her eulogy “STRONG, INTELLIGENT, GENTLE, WISE, INSPIRING, YOU WILL BE MISSED BY ALL”

Our ranch staff are all young, energetic people with a real interest in the cattle business. They “keep me young” just trying to keep up. I am amazed at what they accomplish each day. Trent Wirstuk is our foreman, assisted by Cody Stickney, Ross Maxwell, Brody Leipert and Cody. It has been a very busy year, and we are so fortunate to have such quality people work with us everyday. These bulls look so good and the ranch runs so well completely because of their efforts. Thank you.

Location:The sale will be held the Dick Jones Sales Pavillion Exhibition Grounds, 5521 - 49th Avenue, Lloydminster, Saskatchewan. This is one of the finest sales facilities in Western Canada. All cattle are under cover in heated facilities.

Time: The sale will commence at 12 noon, Saturday, January, 28th, 2012.Lunch will be served at 11:00 a.m.

Health:This herd is maintained in TB Free and Bangs Free Area so that purchases may be taken right out from the sale to any point of Canada. All sale cattle have been vaccinated 3 times for black leg. Cattle may travel anywhere in Canada without test. All sale bulls over 12 months have been semen tested. All sale cattle have been treated with Ivomec. Consult with M.C. Quantock for vaccination protocol.

Guarantee:The cattle will be sold under the terms of the Standard Breeding Guarantee of the Canadian Hereford, Angus and Charolais Associations. Breeders Guarantee, Bulls... Should any bull fourteen (14) months of age or over fail to prove a breeder after being used on females known to be breeders, the matter shall be reported in writing to the seller within six (6) months following the date of purchase or six (6) months after the bull has reached fourteen (14) months of age. The seller will have the right and privilege of six (6) months to prove the bull a breeder. Pedigrees will be transferred as soon as possible. All animals are guaranteed breeders. Refer to terms inside back cover.

Delivery: All purchases are at the buyer’s risk as soon as sold; however, every reasonable care and attention will be given while shipping is arranged. M.C. Quantock will provide delivery to central ranch locations anywhere in the Western Provinces absolutely free. Generally we have cattle going into all provinces such that we can arrange our load so that delivery will be convenient. On cattle going longer distances - M.C. Quantock will cost share deliver. M.C. “Fairly honestly and accurately presented on every bull” about describes my philosophy on the use of performance data. Over the many years I have tried to provide all and any objective information that I felt would help my customers select, analyze and fit our bulls into their various programs. Now, with 8 bull lines working within our own program, we have all the necessary genetics within the M.C. Quantock Livestock gene pool to completely service the crossbreeding needs of the industry. We can build and develop programs through one or a combination of our bull lines to maximize net profit on your ranches, recognizing that each farm or ranch is a unique situation with different advantages, disadvantages and needs.The data presented varies by bull line and the state of our on-ranch records with each line. I still subscribe to some extent to the old saying, “If you give a good cowboy a bull’s birthday and his weight, he’ll tell you if the bull’s got performance.” Now with the technology available, we have developed new ways of analyzing cattle. However, simple rates of gain and adjusted weights are still very meaningful and easy to interpret by our customers. Birth weights are always taken within 24 hours of birth and presented as actual unadjusted weights. We will begin to incorporate EPDs (Expected Progeny Differences) as the Canadian data reaches higher levels of accuracy and more closely represents the genetics available in each bull. Mandatory whole herd reporting would help. We, in fact, use current EPDs to select our herd bulls. That’s our job as seedstock breeders. As a commercial cattleman, you need not worry about EPDs – just depend on us. It won’t be long until Genomics make EPD’s obsolete. Tom Lasater who developed “Beefmaster” cattle once said that “Breeding cattle is a relatively simple task – the challenge is to keep it simple”, and that statement has a lot of truth. Don’t try to select for so many things that you go nowhere. Work slowly at improving the “weak links” in the cattle you have at home, through careful selection of sires.1) Selecting your Bull(s):Because the bulls in this sale are from the top of our production, most are above average for all traits in our herds and in most cases the line. We work with large numbers and select only the best. Please don’t make the mistake of trying to find the perfect bull, in our experience he does not exist. Select bulls to improve on the weak traits in your cows by purchasing bulls that are strong in those traits.2) Calving Traits:We have included here the age of the bull’s mother, the calving ease code U – unassisted, E – easy pull, H – hard pull, MP – malpresentation, S – surgical. Also listed is the birth weight. The issue of birth weights is a controversial one. There is a high genetic correlation between frame, weight per day of age, daily gain, mature weight and birth weight. As you increase any one by selection they all increase. Our objective is to find those rare bulls, who have “TRAIT BALANCE”. Those that balance the antagonistic traits of birth weight with post weaning size and gain. We are now uncovering bulls in our program in all breeds capable of doing this and utilizing them extensively as herdsires. It is perfectly reasonable to expect a mature cow to calve a calf in the 90-110 lb. range. In fact new research suggests that daughters of bulls with birth weights in this range sire daughters with large pelvises and the ability to easily deliver larger calves. Obviously the number one performance trait is to be born alive. Our mature cow herd is capable of calving 90-110 lb. calves unassisted and that’s what is important. Use our birth weight information as a guide to what females you may wish to breed the bull to. The birth weights are actual weights taken within 24 hours of birth and not adjusted for age of dam. Level of nutrition and management difference may decrease birth weight by as much as 10%. The reality is they are probably accurate within 5% depending on whether the calf has nursed or not and whether it is slightly overdue or premature.3) Maternal Traits:The performance of this mother with regard to fertility measured by her calving interval (a good beef cow should calve every 365 days under adequate management) – also the weaning ratio, a measure of the milking ability of the mother and the genetics of the calf – (A ratio of say 105 means the calf was 5% above average for weaning weight). For improvements in weaning performance, select high ratios and high adjusted 205 day weights as well as weaning weight per day of age (W.D.A.).Our Hereford, H-2, Red Angus, Black Angus, Red and Black Angus x Simmental and Red Angus x Gelbvieh hybrid lines all are focused on improving maternal and mainstream performance in your cow herds. Our Charolais, while used predominantly in a terminal role, nevertheless are still selected from good milk genetics within that breed to assure that they are not “one track” cattle.To improve milk and maternal ability select a bull with a high maternal rating. If you sell your calves at weaning then you’ll need a bull with a high weaning ratio and weaning WDA, as well as good growth traits.

4) Growth Traits:A measure of the animal’s ability to grow:On yearling bulls of all breeds: We present adjusted weaning weights on all yearling bulls as well as weaning W.D.A.’s. This measures both the bull’s own genetic ability to grow and his mother’s milking ability. (It can, however, be greatly influenced by management and environment). We present a test gain which indicates his feedlot performance.We present a projected yearling weight which is based on the bull’s 205 day weight and a formula we have developed using W.W.D.A. and Test Gain to estimate his 365 day weight. A similar formula is used to project the 18 month weights on our fall bulls. This is variable, however, and is an estimate only. (We consider it to be plus or minus 75 lbs.)5) Fertility:We have measured all the Two-Year-Old and Fall Bulls’ scrotal circumferences and then presented the data as actual circumferences. As testicle size is very highly inherited and reflects the bull’s breeding capacity, the measurements will allow you to compare the bulls for this characteristic. It should be emphasized that all the bulls in this sale are much more than adequate in this department with many being excellent. Testicle size has a high correlation with early puberty in half sisters and daughters and hence, is a trait very important to your profit. Our management and culling practices put pressure on our herd to be very fertile even though fertility is a trait of low heritability. All our Two-Year-Old bulls and our fall bulls are semen tested. The Hybrid yearling bulls are too young at sale time, but are all guaranteed breeders and have been examined visibly and guaranteed to pass a semen test when they reach reproductive age. All bulls left on bull development will be semen tested prior to deliver. ON FALL BULLS TESTICLE MEASURES ARE TAKEN AT 14 MONTHS.6) Carcass Traits:While carcass is not our primary focus on our maternal mainstream lines, we do want as much muscularity as possible as long as it does not adversely affect reproductive capacity.7) Frame Size:We have discontinued providing frame size information. The only commodity any of us get paid for is weight. Most cattle in the industry at the present time have enough frame, some in fact have too much. My Dad always said; “It’s not how big they get, but how quick they get big that counts.”

CALVING MATERNAL GROWTH FERTILITY

The data we have presented is as comprehensive as possible and will enable you to select bulls to ideally suit your needs. We have listed each bull’s Age of Dam (A.O.D.), Calving Ease (C.E.), Birth Weight (B.W.), Adjusted Weaning Weight (A.W.W.), Grass Gain (G.G.), The Test Average Daily Gain (A.D.G.), Projected 18 Month Weight and Scrotal Size. The bulls have been fed silage, pellet barley ration designed to provide a modest gain. The bulls were weighed at 60 days on test about December 12th and the test gains calculated. The short period accounts for some variability. We have provided some photos to give you an impression of the excellent quality and performance on offer. They are backed by our unconditional guarantee. All are guaranteed breeders. Your attention is directed to the development option which you may wish to consider. All fall and older bulls are semen tested.

Ourfall born calves are left

on their mothers to nurse frombirth until April of the subsequent

year. THEY WILL BE 10-20%LIGHTER AT WEANING THAN IF

THEY WERE SPRING BORN,having not had the advantage of

green grass and abundant mother’s milk.

You will receive a transferred pedigree on all our Red Angus purebred bulls.

Fall Reds are the answer...They’re bigger, stouter and tougher than the yearlings you’ll buy other places. They’ll breed more cows (even the big ones), hold their condition, take less management and be less worry and trouble. They’ve been gently and slowly developed on grass, so they last a long time in your herd. They’ll breed circles around a yearling and they’re not the “leftovers” like most 2 year old you’ll find. They really are the answer. “Perfect Age” bulls - 20 to 22 months old at breeding time. WHY BUY YEARLING WHEN YOU CAN HAVE THESE AT NO MORE MONEY?

RETAINED BREEDING INTERESTSTo enhance our genetic progress and move our best young bulls into our program more rapidly, we are going to retain 1/4 interest and Nov.-Dec. possession each year on some of our best prospects. The purchaser gets the complete use of the bull and all salvage value. M.C. Quantock may wish to use the bull in the off season Nov.-Dec. for our fall program. M.C. Quantock will provide all trucking, insurance on our interest and winter the bull free of charge on any bull we use. This project may involve Red Angus, Black Angus and Hereford. These bulls were weaned in April, spent 60 days on feed then went to grass. Pasture conditions were very dry until mid June with more normal rain fall the rest of the year. We started the bulls on our pelleted ration a little early to compensate for the early dry conditions and avoid bloat. Some new sires are represented and with the evolution of our breeding program, these bulls just continue to get more uniform and more impressive. Bull after bull there is no darn difference. There is no better set of reds than these. For comparison the summer gains are the most accurate over 140 days rather than the test gain, which is very short. We know this age of bull is the best in the business for British breed bulls. They have been developed slowly, mostly on grass, have developed a bigger more functional rumen and will be easier keepers on forage their entire life. The other great advantage is that at no time in their development have they been pushed with feed.

Summer Two-Year-Old Red Angus Bulls

This age group of bulls is something new for us. We have had up to 300 cows calving in May and June as well as our big fall calving herd. These are grass-calved bulls from a “bale grazing” low input cowherd which never gets close to a corral. These bulls are 2-3 months younger than our past two year old bulls (which were co-operator produced). The bulls are weaned in late Nov.-Dec. backgrounded then put on grass the second summer. They are really just 60-90 days older than our popular fall bulls. A new expanding segment of our program. Many of these bulls are just June calves. Some top bulls are in this category.

Here’s the “Guppies”. Real cowmen will appreciate these beefy, deep bodied, heavy muscled beef bulls. Best of all, they’re loaded maternally as well. This is an expanding line for us as our customers calve their daughters and just want more. As this program evolves, these bulls just get better and better and capture more repeat customers. Hereford Fall BullsMost Herefords are sold as big fat two year olds. They’ve spent waytoo long at the feed bunk, 500-550 days of hard feed in mostcases. (Incredible when we only feed steers for 100-150 days toslaughter.) If you’re tired of two year olds that are too big and toofat or yearlings that are barely big enough, our fall bulls are theanswer. Gently and slowly developed on pasture, easy keeping,they’ll hold their condition for life. Our fall bulls will be 20-22months old at breeding, just the perfect age. This is a home raised powerhouse we call “Nifty”, he’s out of one of our great old cows (she raised him as a “last calf heifer”). Nifty is absolutely rock solid, sound as can be and very athletic. As a 7 year old he can move like a calf. For a Hereford he will drive down birth weight (his birth weight average is only 81 lbs.) his calves are “big gutted”, deep easy doing cattle. Best of all his daughters are milky moderate cows with flawless, ageless, udders.

This is “Nemo,” he was purchased by Diamond J Cattle as a sale topper. For most Hereford breeders, he would not have enough frame but he is big in many ways; big body, wide based, easy keeping. His sons were our best gainers on grass. Nemo is a Hereford much closer to what the breed needs to be, to have a place in the industry. All his sons are from first calf heifers.

We began a search for the right opportunity to enter the black businessabout 12 years ago. I have had a “love affair” with black cows since thelate 60’s when we used blacks to establish our highly successful redherd.We looked at a lot of black programs and were fortunate to have hadthe opportunity to purchase a cross-section of the Angus Acresproducing cow herd in 1998. Included were females of varying ages,yearling bulls and bull calves. The transaction also included our use ofmajor Angus Acres herdsires for our fall breeding program for severalyears. Our objective in this whole herd approach was to offer ourcustomers a program, not a “mis-mash” of cattle from everywhere, butthe results of a good cowman’s life work.The Armitage’s Angus Acres herd is one of the oldest established andrespected black herds in the province. Straight Canadian traditionalAngus bloodlines with uniformity and consistency bred in.

We have taken the Angus Acres base cows and moved forward as weevolve our own distinctive blacks. Like all our other projects, these blackcattle are built for our commercial customers.Many of the bulls this year are by Black sires produced here from theelite cows from the Angus Acres purchase.We methodically used high maternal bulls of the type we liked (easykeeping, deep bodied, high milk moderated blacks) to create volumes ofhalf sisters which are now producing our best cattle.Using the same selection priorities as our Red Angus and driven by theadvice of our commercial customers, we are now producing uniform,high quality, black bulls in volume. As a seedstock breeder, it isrewarding to now see a decade of work result in bulls like this offering.The commercial industry will appreciate them. Our biggest offering todate.

“5144” was picked as a yearling to use on heifers. The bulls in the sale aresome of our very best. This young sires’ progeny were so impressive we moved him to the cowherd in our summer and fall breeding programs. He’s such an easy keeper he gained a bunch of weight while breeding our fall cows. We’re cowmen first and these are cowmen’s bulls. Our objective inCharolais bulls is to provide our customers bulls that maximize the Charcross advantage in feeder calves and minimize any problems. Our bullsare thick bulls but they are still smooth bulls. The bulls have rapid earlygrowth which you need and the two year olds will not be too big. OurCharolais are built for the ranch trade with very moderate birthweightsand unquestionable soundness - white bulls that will last and last.We deliver what you asked for: lots of hair, so you can sell those “deepcoated, good doin’” tan calves and top the market; good dispositionsbecause we’ve all got families that help; unquestionable soundness,because some other Charolais bulls don’t last; moderate framesbecause some others get too big.Our Charolais pack lots of muscle, are long bodied, smooth and not realtall. Spring and Summer Two-Year-Old Charolais Bulls Our Charolais program was founded years ago through a joint venture with Vincent Bros. Eventually that cow herd was sold; the nucleus young cows, to Telliers. We have continued our bull production arrangement primarily with the Telliers. It allows us access to lots of purebred Charolais cows with which to produce our sale bulls. We jointly select the herdsires used in the herd which allows us control of the genetic direction or our product (the sale bulls). It is very rewarding for me to see the improvement year by year in the bulls we offer the commercial cattlemen. Because our roots run deep in the commercial industry, you can depend on us to be your reliable source of mainstream Charolais bulls in volume.Our Charolais are now grass calved in late April-May and are younger than previously. They are real “ranch” bulls calving on their own with only once per day checks. They are the kind of cowman’s Charolais we can all use. Our numbers are growing as Luc builds a functional grass calving purebred program along with his big commercial herd. We are pleased to have some bulls produced in the Ray Murphy FMX herd as well this year. They are “Standouts”.Our Charolais “twos” are younger than ever. They run out on grass longer than before to assure soundness. They have only been on feed for 3 weeks at press time so they’ll come to you a little leaner. They’re rock solid bulls unquestionably sound and ready to work. We feature lots of “buff” coloured bulls to get those great buckskin calves. The majority of our bulls are just May-June born Twos, developed the way you need them.

We have established a widely accepted program to develop all yearling,fall, and 2 year old bulls here at the ranch to better serve ourcustomers. We will take the bulls home after the sale and feed themuntil early April on a silage based ration to gain about 2 1/2 lbs. perday. Delivery will be throughout the month of April, area by area. The price for this serviceis $100 on yearling and falls - $125 on 2 year olds, payable at sale time. It’s a real valueas it includes board, a semen test and central point delivery.

We require that you insure the bulls on development. Good rates are available from our agents.
