McGavin’s Rural Express

Gordon McGavin had competed in plowing match competitions throughout the province. He was awarded the Cana-dian Plowing Championship at the Interna-tional Plowing Match in Niagara Falls in 1926. He was approached by different machinery companies to sell their products. Henry Ford personally asked him to retail Ford Tractors but Gordon declined because Ford wanted the family farms signed as collateral. John (J.J.) McGavin, Gordon’s father had the fi rst radio in the area. The neighbours snidly asked him if “he was still listening to the noise in the box, Johnny”. He put a Delco system for electric power at the farm in McKillop in 1915 which cost $540. Later he wired the barn and shop for $240. The Wind Charger was mounted on the windmill stand. In 1936 he and Gordon built a dam in the creek and installed a 6 horse power Water Turbine which charged 32 volt batteries.

History of McGavin Farm Equipment.1936 - Started as a Cockshutt dealer on the home farm where Jeff and Shannon McGavin and family now live.1946 - Became a New Holland dealer1947 - Became a New Idea Equipment dealer1949 - Had many ‘short lines’ to retail 1951 - Moved to Village of Walton across from Walton Community Hall.1953 - Now retailed farm implement companies such as: Eastern Machinery, Turnco, Geo White, Mohawk etc.1957 - Became a Nuffi eld Tractor dealer. G. NEIL MCGAVIN graduated from the Ontario Agriculture College and joined his father Gordon.1958 - Was cancelled as a Cockshutt dealer because was selling too much New Holland, and Nuffi eld equipment. Installed the fi rst ‘radio telephone’ in service truck. It was very expensive at $3.00 per call plus long distance!1963 - Moved to the former Walton school location when new Walton school was opened.

1964 - Built a workshop on back of the school building - 30’ X 40’. The parts department and offi ces were located upstairs in the building.1975 - McGavin Farm Equipment Ltd. became incorporated1976 - Founder of the company, William John GORDON MCGAVIN died.l978 - Built a new 40’ X 80’ addition onto the shop to be used as the workshop. Moved the parts department downstairs into the former service shop.1984 - BRIAN Neil McGAVIN graduated from the University of Guelph OAC and joined his father in the business.1988 - Ford Motor Company bought New Hol-land and wanted purity i.e. to sell their products only. Built a new addition 50’ x 105’ to house showroom, offi ces, parts etc. A new company - McGavin Farm Supply Ltd. was established with Brian McGavin as President. It would retail only New Holland Equipment.1992 - JEFFREY John Gordon MCGAVIN who had graduated from the University of Guelph in 1991 left United Co-operators of Ontario (UCO) to join his father Neil and brother Brian at McGavin’s. Jeff later became President of McGavin Farm Equipment Ltd.1996 - Built a new 100’ X 100’ Workshop and 40’x40’ washbay, incorporated with the 178 & 1988 building. 2008 - Built new facility for McGavin Compact Equipment where the ‘church shed’ and old frame schoolhouse were located. Retail Bobcat Industrial and Rental equipment, landscaping equipment etc.McGavin Farm Equipment and McGavin Farm Supply and McGavin Compact Equipment employ 25 people who serve agriculture in Southwestern Ontario.

Salford Continues to add to the Popular RTS SeriesSalford Farm Machinery - Salford, On

The RTS Series has become a main-stay for Salford Farm Machinery and for some it is the definition of term Vertical Tillage.

Recent years saw the addition of the RTS Fertilizer Applicator and the Coulter Chisel.

These units feature 500lb or 1000lb shanks in addition to the RTS indi-vidually mounted coulter and harrow systems.

The shanks are fitted with either chisel points to add deeper soil den-sity reduction to the RTS; or you can add fertilizer application wear parts such as NH3 Knives.

Last year at the National Farm Ma-chinery Show in Louisville, KY Salford launched the RTS Extreme.

The Extreme is lead by 2 rows of 20” shallow concave blades in order to more aggressively resize tough crop residue, as well as mix more soil with residue to leave a darker finish and further promote decomposition.

This year at the show in Louisville Salford was recognized with a Farm Industry News 2011 FinOvation Award for the RTS Extreme.

Salford received the FinOvation Award, given by Farm Industry News, because the RTS Extreme was recog-nized as one of the most innovative agricultural products of 2010, based on reader interest.

Nearly one year to the day since the launch of the RTS Extreme, Salford is once again proving to be driven by innovation and design with the

release of the RTS Heavy Duty.The RTS Heavy Duty adds a whole new dimension to this series of verti-cal tillage tools.

RTS Heavy Duty features a heavier shank design and larger hubs for blade mounting. This allows it to carry larger blades and coulters for deeper tillage, and even more ag-gressive residue resizing.

“We always knew there was the potential for the RTS to till deeper and boast more weight per blade,”

says Salford General Manager, Geof Gray. “Our engineer’s never shy away from a challenge. The RTS Heavy Duty couldn’t come at a more relevant time for the industry.”

The RTS Heavy Duty comes when no-till producers, especially corn pro-ducers, are struggling with tougher crop residues due to today’s higher yielding plant genetics.

38 McGavin’s Rural ExpressA little bit of History…Grandparents J.J. & Estella McGavin must have been forward thinkers. 1915 Delco electric system; 32 Volt for $5401918 Wired shop & barn and put where windmill was and a wind charger was mounted1936 Built temporary damn and installed a 6 hp water wheel1937 Made permanent dam and used it until 1948. Dr. John Turnbull of Seaforth remembers how hard it was digging the footing.My grandfather Stewart on my mother’s side then returned to Brussels. Their homestead was in Langley, North Dakota.

Dad (Gordon) enjoyed inventing equipment. His stook loader was a hay loader running backwards to load stooks onto a wagon. He tried to patent it, but combines were coming in at this time and stooking was a lot of manual labour. He also installed a buzz saw on the front of the tractor, and a drag saw on the back. These would not have met the safety standards of today, as they did not have many shields.

Another invention was a land packer with a grass seeder box mounted on top. This was the same idea as the Brillion Seeder today!He mounted a posthole digger on a manure loader – this is also similar to today’s equipment, except now they are driven by hydraulic motors.One of the greatest inventions in my mind has been the hydraulics. Their amazing lifting capacity comes in small motors that you can hold in your hands. They can produce up to 15 HP and can be in hidden spots.

39McGavin’s Rural ExpressDad won the 1926 Canadian Plowing Championship and Henry Ford wanted him to be a dealer, but he wanted the farms for security. Cockshutt, a family company, was willing to take a chance and he became an implement dealer on the farm where I grew up!1958 Nuffield, an English company, came into the picture. Our money was worth more than theirs and we could see similar horse powered tractor as a Cockshutt (Canadian made) and throw in a baler. At this time, Cockshutt was taken over in a hostile stock take over by an American inventor. Many of the Cockshutt family were let go and the friendly family farm equipment dealer was turned into a high pressure selling company and service was not their main concern.Some interesting facts I came across:A man wrote from on a Huron County Jail letter-head asking if it was okay that he could not pay his bill until March. If our answer was no, we were to respond to the above address!In 1944, Canadians dropped 85,500 tons of bombs. This caused steel to be short in 1945 for farm equip-ment.

Neil’s Funnies:A man came into a restaurant with an os-trich and ordered a toasted cheese sandwich. He looked at the ostrich and it nodded the same. The waitress said that it would be $9.50 and he pulled that exact amount out of his pocket. This went on all week – he would order, the ostrich would agree and he would have the exact amount of money in his pocket. On Friday he ordered steak and the ostrich nodded the same. $31.50 was the amount this time, and again the man pulled out the right change.

When the waitress brought his food, she asked about the ostrich and how he always had the right amount of money.The man explained that he had been cleaning his attic when he came across an old lamp and the genie that came out gave him two wishes. The fi rst was that he would always have the right amount of money for whatever he wanted to buy. The ostrich was a different story… he had asked for a tall chick with long legs that would agree with anything he said.
