INDOOR LOCALIZTION AND TRACKING Abdul Haseeb Jehangir, Jules Fakhoury, Robert Morawski and Tho Le-Ngoc McGill University, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Broadband Communications Research Lab
Introduction There has been a growing interest in real-time tracking sys-
tems in clinical applications recently. Such systems have been
used previously to track specialized medical equipment which
reduces time for clinicians to look for equipment as well as
better manage the use of equipment.
In this research, we extend the use of tracking systems on
medical personnel and patients. We aim to develop, design
and deploy a real-time tracking, monitoring, alerting and
control system in Geriatrics Department of Royal Victoria
Hospital.
Localization Techniques Ultra Wide Band (UWB) technology:
Measurement of both time difference of arrival and angle of arrival.
More measurements per sensor make the system more robust and location
can be determined using fewer sensors. Accuracy up to 15 cm.
Expensive Implementation.
Wi-Fi fingerprinting-based Techniques:
RSS measurements collected at known positions, referred as fingerprints.
Fingerprints compared to online measurements using pattern matching.
Cheaper solution but comes with the cost of lower accuracy.
Implementation
Conclusion Extending this technology on personnel
can help the companies and/or organiza-
tions reach a better level of productivity.
The system with appropriate software
provides better security and organization
of resources. Given the circumstances, its
may not be practically feasible to deploy
a highly accurate UWB system. Use of
both Wi-Fi and UWB technologies may
give a better price-performance ratio.

Legend: Displays the color infor-
mation of each tag monitored by the
software.
Tag Position: The Name, ID and x
-y coordinates are displayed for the
tag selected on the legend. The tag
(red in this case) is also highlighted
on the map.
Map: Shows the position of all tags.
Trails of tags are shown to display
the path followed. A zone is high-
lighted if a tag enters restricted
zone.
Logs: History of all events dis-
played in tabular format to re-use
the space.
Alerts: User is warned about any
action that requires attention
based on priority. The text is dis-
played in blinking red font. Sound
is produced to attract attention of
the user.
Door Control: Allows the user to
control the door from computer.
Tag Management: Allows user
to easily add/remove the tag. Also
gives battery levels of each tag
