The Mackam amphoterics are mild surfactants, stable in both acid and alkaline systems. Theirproperties are as follows:

MONO AND DIACETATES

This class is derived from fatty imidazolines. They are the reaction products of the imidazolinewith one or two moles of sodium chloroacetate:

The amphoterics are extremely mild surfactantsand are widely used in baby shampoos. Theacetates are also stable in strong alkalinesystems and are used as wetting agents incaustic cleaners.

SALT FREE AMPHOTERICES

This class is similar to the mono and diacetatesexcept they are salt free propionates. They arealso very mild and stable in highly alkalinesystems and are excellent emulsifiers for aerosoland emulsion systems.

AMINO PROPIONATES

This class is a true amphoteric since it haszwitterion properties:

ALKYLAMINOPROPIONIC ACID

They are excellent for mild shampoos andprovide a conditioning effect in acid shampoos.

DIHYDROXYETHYL ALKYL GLYCINATE

This class is unique in that it is stable in bothacid and alkaline media. The reason for thisstability is that there are no ester or amidegroups to hydrolyze:

They are excellent thickeners for stronglyalkaline oven cleaners and acid bowl cleaners. For hair care, they provide excellent conditioningfor shampoos and conditioners.

SULFOAMPHOTERICS

This class is a sulfonate of a fatty imidazoline. They are very mild surfactants, have a hightolerance for inorganic salts and are stable overa wide pH range. The general structure is asfollows:

Mackam / Betaines and Sultaines

The Mackam betaines are inner salts of fattydimethylamines. They have a variety ofapplications from industrial cleaners to personalcare products. Their properties are as follows:

BETAINES

This class of surfactants is actually an inner saltin which the positive and negative charges areboth present on the molecule at low and highpH:

SULTAINES

This class is a sulfonate of a fatty amidoamine. They are inner salts which have a positive andnegative charge at both high and low pH.

They are excellent thickeners and foam boostersfor anionic surfactants. The sultaines also hasexcellent acid and alkaline stability.

The monoester type is primarily used in personal carebecause it is very mild to both skin and eyes. They alsoreduce the irritation properties of high foaming anionicsurfactants and are low cost compared to other mildspecialty surfactants. Ethoxylation improves mildnesseven further and the low irritation properties are unaf-fected by concentration. Applications are:

The diesters, especially the dioctyl, have a variety ofapplications. They are powerful wetting agents and oneof the most effective interfacial tension depressantscommercially available. Applications are:

Mackamide / AlkanolamidesTM

Mackamides are nonionic surfactants made fromthe condensation of mono or diethanolamineand a fatty acid or ester.

They have a wide variety of uses both forpersonal care and industrial products.Mackamides basically function as thickeners, foam boosters and stabilizers when blended withanionic surfactants such as lauryl sulfates, ethersulfates, olefin sulfonates or alkylbenzenesulfonates.

When back titrated with a fatty acid, they havemany applications for industrial products. Someapplications are: detergent for high-alkalineheavy-duty cleaners, solubilizer for inorganicbuilders, corrosion inhibitors, cutting oil lubri-cants and chain lubricants.

Monoethanol amides are solic at room tempera-ture. They are used for solid applications suchas a slow-release detergent block, impregnatedsoap pads, pearling agent, or bar soap additive.

Mackine / AmidoaminesTM

The structures are as follows:Mackines are amidoamines which becomecationic surfactants when neutralized. Thesesalts provide excellent hair conditioningproperties. Mackines are unusual in that theyare compatible with anionic surfactants and willnot depress foam properties of a shampoo.

Mackines are also excellent corrosion inhibitorsand the salts produce emulsifying properties foracid systems.

They are used primarily as precursors in themanufacture of betaines, amine oxides, quaternary ammonium compounds and cationicsurfactants. The salts of the morpholinederivatives are extremely mild to skin and eyes. They are excellend conditioners for babyproducts and mild hand or facial cleansers.

Mackazoline / Imidazolines

Mackazolines are imidazoline emulsifiers withthe following structure:

In general, the Mackazolines function as oilsoluble emulsifiers producing cationic o/wemulsions. When neutralized they are excellentemulsifiers for semipolar or polar solvents astoluene, pine oil or trichloroethylene.

They can also be quaternized with an alkylhalide to form stronger cationic characteristics. The salts are excellent antistatic agents and theywill displace water from metal substrates, thusbecoming a "water displacing solvent".

The Mackazolines are also corrosion inhibitorsfor acid bowl cleaners and acid pickling systems.

Mackalene / Cationic ConditionersTM

Mackalenes are amidoamine salts with thefollowing structure:

They are excellend conditioners for both skinand hair care products. The Mackalenes areunique in that they are compatible with anionicsurfactants and therefore can be used asconditioners for clear shampoos. Compared to aquarternary ammonium compound, Mackalenesdo not depress the foam properties of anionicsurfactants. Also the morpholine types are non-irritating and are recommended for applicationswhich require extra mildness, such as babyshampoos and leave-on conditioners.

Mackamine / Amine OxidesTM

Mackamines are alkyl amine oxides which aremildly cationic in acid media:

Their major applications in personal care are ashair conditioners, viscosity builders and foamboosters. They have an advantage overalkanolamides in that the amine oxide will notcause pH drift in acid systems, thus providinggreater stability to formulations.

For highly alkaline heavy duty cleaners,Mackamines provide excellent detergent andwetting properties.
