PART 2- DESIGN CONCEPT

In building 2, Pueblo revival style will ring true. The building will be comfortable and built keeping the Southwest design in mind. Neutral creamy white or ivory walls with colorful accents. Terra cotta and bright turquoise will make an excellent statement. The warm colors will provide a cozy feel while the strong accents will help to bring it all together. Natural elements such as animal references, pottery, and woven rugs will be integrated into the space to allow for those comfort feelings of home. The addition of succulent plants in a terrarium space or just as decorative accents will provide another natural element and promote a feeling of being alive. Wooden beams and references to wood will be worked into the design. The design will offer all the comforts of the traditional Pueblo revival style with chic updates. When women and children come in a feeling of home will come over them and they will feel safe remembering those elements. They will also feel very energized and alive from all of the modern aspects that will promote growth.

JUSTIFICATION

When I look at the photo, I see rustic charm with southern southwest flair. It is strong with many years behind it and many in front of it. The feeling is that of a sun that sets now and has set. It reminds me of long summer days and cool summer nights when friends and family are together. The deep red chestnut brings in the beams from the ceiling and all the heavy woods. The soft sable is a cozy neutral. It evokes calm. The ivory/white also creates a calming environment.

DESCRIPTION: The beautiful rustic simplicity of this Table, with the interesting branch design on its base and legs, will bring a sense of warmth to your gatherings.

REMARKS: ECO FRIENDLY: La Lune harvests only fast growing and invasive wood species such as poplar and willow for the production of all its products. All woods are harvested near the factory in Wisconsin, thereby reducing the negative impact and inefficiency of transportation and eliminating any impact on the rainforests of the world where much lumber is harvested by the furniture industry. All harvesting is done by hand by La Lune employees in order to maintain complete control and supervision of the harvesting process. La Lune’s unique yet low-tech and low-processing manufacturing methods are eco-friendly and efficient. The turn of the century La Lune factory buildings and machinery have been carefully re-cycled and re-stored incorporating high efficient use of energy. La Lune carries no inventory of furniture and manufactures “just in time” as items are sold. All La Lune finishes are non-polluting, non-toxic, non-flammable, water-based finishes which are locally manufactured exclusively for La Lune. La Lune furniture is designed and constructed to last for generations, will become tomorrow’s valuable antiques, and thereby will reduce negative environmental impact and landfill waste associated with cheaply made, disposable, non-degradable furniture. La Lune’s human sustainability is an important part of its environmental sustainability; in 1986, La Lune relocated its operations to an abandoned factory building in a central city neighborhood now called Riverwest. La Lune’s furniture, factory, and company history provide a perfect educational tool to teach others about eco-friendly manufacturing.

Justification

The principles of design that are elements of the design are line, color, light, texture, balance and harmony. The line is important to the design because it determines the harshness of the design. If the line is very strong then it can come off as being very modern and too futuristic. If the line is too weak it may not support the design in that the style won’t meld together or stand out on its own. In this case, neither were true. The line rang through like it should have. The concept of line in this design was to be smooth but in a modern way and to create a sense of openness while also incorporating a need for gathering and being with friends and family.

Color was very important to this design because there is so much significance in the colors that are used in the Spanish culture. Turquoise jewelry and pottery as well as animal carcasses and rugs are all very important to the Spanish Pueblo Revival Style.

Texture of the stone wall, brick, and stone flooring all play an important role in adding texture and tradition to the space. Balance must be a priority in the design choices that are made as well as the design as a whole. If the design is not balanced this many times is quite obvious. If it is that obvious to us then imagine how much easier it will be for a client to notice. Harmony in the patterns, colors, finishes, furniture, and accessories is crucial. If none of the items listed above exist, the design fails. Everything that we have worked for in our design must register to a potential client or the work was done for naught.

The design reflects the culture in the furniture styles with rustic charm, the poufy organic shapes that allow for the body to just sink in giving the feeling of the all too familiar built in bench. The Spanish tiles and brick are reminiscent of this Pueblo Style. The design respects the diversity of the future inhabitants in that it allows for them to add their own flair. The walls are ivory with pops of turquoise, dark brown, rust orange, or sand colored accessories. These things are all easily changed.

The furniture meets the needs of women and children in that it is safe. It is very sturdy and promotes a feeling of closeness with some of the round tables and the short tables creating opportunities to chat. The lighting also offers a cozy feel without being too dark. Sometimes the lighting can look really great but still feel like there is no light in the house. I am not sure about the budget. I feel that we went over budget, but on some materials I did not.

Codes and Universal design played a large role in these schematic plans. Although ADA compliance is a given, especially in this day and age, it is hard at times to make sure it is noted on the plan and that you can in fact move things around to make it easier for anyone with a wheelchair to be able to move around in a living space that accommodates everyone. Ecological and sustainable choices were made when applicable. This means Incandescent vs LED, or most of the furniture wood being forested with sustainable practices and being sustainable as a finished product. So many things in this design came from nature making them in most cases sustainable as long as they can come back just as strong in nature and aren’t harmed.

Reflection

In this class, I learned how important it is to include justification for your designs. I forgot that one justification and I think we were both confused as to where the design was heading. It is so important because in a real life scenario the client may get upset or not understand what the designer is trying to do and it could be disastrous. I could see in a few cases possibly getting replaced for not justifying the thoughts behind the concept. Clients are the number one priority. They need to feel as if we know exactly what their design is about at all times. They need to feel confident that we have their wants and needs in mind with everything we choose for them. I know from now on that things like this can get confused easily and that it is very important not to ever forget it.

In this class, I feel I received a better understanding about how the schematics of a floor plan work and why all the markings on the drawings are important and why they have purpose. This is something I wished I learned early on. I didn’t understand all the markings on the construction documents or floor plans. I was never taught how to read one, just how to make one. These are two totally different concepts. However, I feel that the school lumps the making one into learning about one and it is really hard to do both at the same time. This class was more about the fixtures and styles and therefore I was really able to focus on the plans and see how everything comes together to create a final presentation. This is definitely something that would help the beginner so they feel like they are learning something. It can definitely be overwhelming but now seeing it complete, it was worth it.

One other thing that I learned more about was the need for unobstructed paths. In the past although I knew what colors and fixtures I wanted and maybe some furniture, I still didn’t understand where to place them on a plan. I was just sticking it wherever and hoping that I didn’t have it wrong. I felt insecure about placing furniture because I didn’t understand the overall goal of making sure that there was enough room to walk freely throughout without walking into chairs upon entry and so forth. Now I know so it will be a little easier now. I won’t be a pro at it for sure, but it will make a little more sense.

I didn’t work as a team in this project because I did mine solo, but I will talk a short time about how working on a team is important as I have done it in many past experiences. I am not one who likes to work as a team. I do much better when working alone. I am very opinionated in my designs and I prefer to perfect them as I move through if need be. I guess in some ways I picked the wrong profession because I usually go with my gut on the first try and I am not one who likes brainstorming. When I get an idea it usually sticks with me. If I can’t justify it or if I find out early on that it won’t work then I scrap it and think of something new, but in most cases my instinct leads the way. I am a perfectionist so I don’t give up and I don’t turn away from a challenge. This is one good thing that helps me design- I think sometimes so far out of the box that it tends to (whether I want it to or not) push me into a leader role rather than a follower and so I become this trendsetter that unfortunately has to make her own decisions without depending on anyone else.

From a team aspect though- they can be important for certain people. They help people to talk things out and brainstorm. It allows you to not have to carry the burden of necessarily designing everything on your own. Working as a team gives you the opportunity to inform everyone at once, see things from someone else’s eyes, get feedback and hopefully honest feedback about your design. Working as a team for some people is really great because it allows them to shine in a group rather than being on the forefront which can make some people fairly uncomfortable. It offers a certain security that if something went wrong in the design phase hopefully someone would catch it before it is too late. Working as a team now will help us to be equal players in a firm run by someone else after graduating and give us the opportunity to move up by showing our superiors that we have the ability to listen and give criticism where it is due as well as give and receive praise when it is due. Interior design has many parts and many parts have to come together to create one in order for them all to work together to create something great. This is something that I can stand behind and bring into not only future classes, but also my future design endeavors.
