The Michigan Contractor of the Year (MCOY) Awards were developed four years ago to

give the American Subcontractors Association of Michigan (ASAM) membership an opportunity to nominate and recognize general contractors and construction man-agers who exhibit best practices, professionalism and collaboration with Michigan’s subcontracting community.

ASAM members nominated candidates from June 27 through July 30 at asamichigan.net. Online voting took place from August 19 through September 20, evaluating nominees for performance in spe-cific categories that are essential to the contractor-subcontractor rela-tionship. Each member company scored each nominee in a confiden-tial, defined process that encom-passed the following criteria:

•Bid Ethics and Practice: Does not make a practice of post award price reductions from other contrac-tors involved in the project. Notifies subcontractors of major discrepan-cies or obvious deviations related to scope of work. Ensures consistency as it relates to scope of work, plans and specifications.

•Safety: Leads the way in creat-

ing a safe jobsite by ensuring each site is clean, neat, organized, and professional. Provides written stan-dards as it relates to jobsite safety and holds all of those involved on a project accountable to follow these standards.

•Jobsite Supervision: Projects are run well with minimal scheduling delays. Takes the lead in setting the tone for a positive jobsite where challenges are dealt with in a pro-fessional timely manner, individuals are treated with respect and dignity, and all are working together to pro-duce a quality project.

•Communication: Questions and concerns are dealt with in a timely matter so as to keep the project moving forward. Regularly com-municates candidly, openly, and professionally successes and chal-lenges to all of those involved in the project.

•Schedule Coordination: Accepts and incorporates input regarding overall project schedule and informs all affected parties in advance of potential challenges with the sched-ule. Understands the flow of the project, appropriately sequences the work, and holds all involved appro-priately accountable to meet the overall job schedule.

Project Relations: Approaches the project in the spirit of teamwork and handles all team members con-cerns and input in a cooperative reasonable manner. Sets the tone on the job for all to work together for the good of the project. Manages the owners’ expectations and works to ensure that all contractors involved maintain a positive reputa-tion.

Lien Process: Respects the lien rights of other contractors involved on projects, provides the appropri-ate notices as a matter of practice, and does not take offense when this process is followed.

•Administrative Procedures: Processes and replies to requests for information, change orders, submit-tals, and other formal requests in a time frame that does not require the contractors involved on the project to take unnecessary risk or make assumptions that may later prove to be false.

•Payment Terms: Recognizes the importance of cash flow to the con-tractors on the job, consistently pays in accordance to the terms agreed upon in the contract.

•Quality Workmanship: Has standards for quality of work that meet or exceed the industry stan-

dards. Engages all contractors in the exploration of best practices and innovative solutions as it relates to the construction process.

The American Subcontractors Association of Michigan (ASAM) welcomes you to the fourth annual Michigan Contractor of the Year award (MCOY). Within the construc-tion industry, this is Michigan’s premier event for recognizing general contractors

and construction managers that have a track record of best practices, professionalism, and collaboration with the subcontracting community. This prestigious award has tremendous meaning because it only goes to contractors that operate at the top level, and we are proud to have such strong contractors to work with year after year.

Welcome to the Fourth Annual MCOY Awards

The goal of The American Subcontractors Association of Michigan is to improve the business climate in

the construction industry. Our members are subcontractors, suppliers, and service provid-ers, all collaborating to better provide the owners, architects, and contractors with the knowledge, skill, and workmanship needed for a successful construction project. With that in mind, we continually offer our mem-bership the tools and expertise they need to meet that goal.

Our association has numerous committees with dedicated members interested in our overall goal. Some committees are as follows:

MCOY Award – This award was created to let our general contractor friends know how subcontractors and suppliers see the partnerships that are formed through con-struction projects. Contractors are nominat-ed by subcontractors and suppliers based on the experiences a subcontractor has with the general contractors they nominate. Then, the nominations are compiled and the top eight become nominees for the award. Each subcontractor and supplier then rates each nominee on ten categories relating to their experiences. The winner, first runner up, and second runner up are given awards at a ceremony designed to show the nominees our appreciation of the areas in which they excel.

Education – This committee was estab-lished with a number of goals, such as educating our membership through our Construction Advancement Forums and Best Practices Interchange meetings. We also developed an endowment fund at Ferris State University, to provide students inter-ested in the various subcontractor fields an annual scholarship. We are presently devel-oping an ASAM Educational Directory to offer various educational institutions a source for information and value to student develop-ment in our industry.

Programming – This committee estab-lishes speakers for our monthly meetings. Each is unique and covers areas from the New Workers Compensation Act, Healthcare Reform, Michigan Sales and Use Tax laws, Business Succession, and many more issues with the sole purpose of keeping our mem-bership up to date on the many issues that affect our businesses.

Legislative – The focus of this group has been both short term and long term, regard-ing value to our members. In the short term, the committee actively follows both state and federal proposals as they relate to our members and reports monthly to the membership. An example is Public/Private Partnerships (P3’s). We have also joined the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce to fol-low issues. The committee has also added a presence on the LinkedIn site for general discussions of the day’s issues.

Marketing – The purpose of this commit-tee is to assure our presence in the construc-tion community is always front and center. We work closely with our marketing partner, Reagan Marketing + Design, sharing the work we do for our members and surveying membership to ensure we’re providing the best possible programing and value to our members.

National Association – Jack Austhof (Sobie Company) is currently the President of the National Association, and Jeff Vander Laan (Kent Companies) has been appointed to the same board. This gives our membership a unique perspective of the industry and asso-ciation as a whole.

It is rare for an association to be blessed with so many dedicated members. Having sat in on a number of the committee meet-ings, I can’t help but feel somewhat in awe of the energy expended for our benefit.

On occasion, I have been asked what our company gets from being a part of this orga-nization. Clearly, the benefits noted above should answer that question. Education for present and future employees, good advice from professionals in the construction indus-try, information on how to deal with various customers, and interfacing with those we see on our job sites makes being a member a “no brainer” for me. I often wonder why every subcontractor/supplier in the construc-tion industry hasn’t joined ASAM.

My favorite char-acteristic about the ASAM is the

focus on the positive. When the MCOY was created, the emphasis was on how to improve working relation-ships between subcontractors and contractors (bid ethics, safety, jobsite supervision, etc.) not who ran the lousi-est jobs or who didn’t pay. The intent of this event is to support those that do a great job and reinforce what they are doing, while mak-ing it desirable for others to do the same. The goal is to build trusting relationships, the end result is a commu-nity of top notch contractors and subcontractors working well together… and own-ers getting everything they pay for and more. Anyone can complain; ASAM set out to make a difference in the world through action and self-responsibility.

When it came time to vote this year, we (Pleune Service Company) filled a meet-ing room with employees that have recent experience with the nominated general

contractors and voted point by point with discussions of “why this” or “why that.” The process was that we weighed in on each category as accurately and objectively as possible to call things as we saw them. The results were 1) we rated all cat-egories fairly so they had real meaning (the MCOY is not a popularity contest), and 2) that we had to look in the mirror. While voting, we noticed that some of our issues with generals (for example communication) could be our issue as well, so in turn we will look at our processes and behaviors to confirm we are playing an A game. Trusting that other subcontractors have the same desire to play at a high level, I have no doubt many subs, through introspection, will find the same thing- the MCOY isn’t just about prais-ing the contractors that get it right, it’s about improving the construction industry where we live and work.

The ASA (national) legislative initiatives revolve around subcon-

tractor issues on a national scale, and do an excellent job of reporting progress made around the country.

The ASAM Legislative Committee focuses on reporting and addressing issues at state and local lev-els so our members can stay in tune with all issues that affect them.

We focus on issues that are specific to the construc-tion industry or that affect how we run our businesses, and we partner with other organizations whenever pos-sible.

This year we have inves-

tigated the Common Core Standards and reported find-ings to our members, and evaluated Public Private Partnerships (P3’s) for future action. We determined that P3’s do pose a risk to con-tractors and subcontractors, and will be working with the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce to host a round-table workshop with some of our legislators in early 2014.

All that being said, our top priority is prompt pay. I think everyone would agree that paying what is due, when it’s due, is part of run-ning an ethical business.

Owners, contractors, sub-contractors, and suppliers are all part of the chain that

makes the construction pro-cess work, and when there’s a breakdown in the process everyone involved gets hurt, some more quickly than oth-ers.

Bad business hurts the industry and good business helps it, that’s why we are so pleased to recognize those who exemplify good busi-ness with the MCOY award.

ASAM Legislative Update

ASAM has recently taken part in helping our indus-try grow by speaking to and investing in the lives of many young men and women interested in the construction trades. In the spring of this year, ASAM members and their employ-ees took part in the Hard

Hat Development initiative at Kent ISD. Members and their employees spoke to students about careers in the subcontracting industry. Thank you to the following members who participated in helping to educate young people about a career in subcontracting:

Motivated by a mutu-al desire to equip students with the

knowledge of the contract-ing trades needed to produce effective and quality work-force in Michigan, Ferris State University, its College of Engineering Technology and the American Subcontractors Association of Michigan (ASAM) have forged a tight bond.

ASAM provides advis-ing, education, lobbying and networking services for contractors, service provid-ers and suppliers. As part of ASAM’s educational mission, they’ve partnered with Ferris to develop a mutually-beneficial partner-ship; assisting students with the expenses of college and working closely with FSU to create a workforce that is prepared for the opportuni-ties available in the construc-tion trades. In February, ASAM established an annual scholarship for Construction Management and HVACR students with interest in the subcontracting industry. In March, ASAM hosted the Hard Hat Scholarship Program during “Investing in Our Future: A Partnership with Ferris State University” in Grand Rapids. The key-note speaker that evening was David Eisler, president of Ferris State University. The success of the campaign led to the scholarship’s offi-cial endowment in August and the strengthening of access to higher education.

J.K. Yates, dean of the College of Engineering Technology (CET) at Ferris, appreciates the partnership the university shares with ASAM. This collaboration, centered on student success, is a winning formula for all parties involved.

“Ferris is very proud of its relationship with the American Subcontractors Association of Michigan,” said Yates, who was named dean of CET in April 2012. “Our shared desire to invest in the success of students is a major part of what bonds us. We’ve had numerous oppor-tunities to collaborate on ini-tiatives that are all designed to help as many students

as we can reach their full potential and enter the work-force prepared for what’s ahead. These are the types of private-public partner-ships that help our students receive a high-quality edu-cation in the classroom while putting them on the path to success after graduation.”

The first ASAM scholar-ship recipient will be pre-sented at ASAM’s Michigan Contractor of the Year Awards on Monday, Oct. 14 at Fredrik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids. Ferris’ College of Engineering Technology is a “Program” sponsor for the MCOY Awards this year. Faculty and students from CET will be attending the awards reception. The MCOY Awards provide an opportunity for ASAM mem-bers to nominate and recog-nize general contractors or managers in the construc-tion industry who exhibit best practices, professional-ism and collaboration with Michigan’s subcontracting community.

ASAM’s commitment to Ferris and to higher edu-cation extends beyond its endowed scholarship. The organization accepted a recent invitation for a spot on CTMG’s Industry Advisory Board. Members of ASAM are encouraged to consider Ferris graduates for a variety of opportunities, including internships and full-time employment.

The American Subcontractors Association of Michigan’s Education Committee was established to provide students a direct connection to subcontractors and suppliers in the region. Linda Vos-Graham, presi-dent of Vos Glass, Inc. is the

current Board Chair. Linda, along with committee mem-bers including Brian Potter of AMI, Mel Stein of Modern Roofing and Steve Johnson of Beene Garter among oth-ers strive to provide oppor-tunities for high school and college students to connect with subcontractors during their study. Providing this connection early offers a way for the contracting industry to positively impact the next generation of subcontractors in the state.

The mission of Ferris State University’s College of Engineering Technology is to prepare graduates who have met the high standards of its academic programs for the current and future industrial and business needs in state, national and global markets.

“The College of Engineering Technology is known for its diverse degree programs, excellent reputa-tion for high-quality edu-cation, and the success of its graduates,” Yates said. “The College of Engineering Technology at Ferris State

University has the highest enrollment of any college of engineering technology in the U.S.”

In Fall 2013, the col-lege enrolled 2,063 stu-dents. That represented an increase of 148 students from the Fall 2012 head-count. CET features the School of Automotive and Heavy Equipment, the School of Built Environment, the School of CEEMS, and the School of Design and Manufacturing. The Michigan Contrac-tor of the Year (MCOY) Award is a unique

award in the industry, as it’s awarded by the subcontrac-tors to general contractors. The award design started as Ken Bing’s (President of Town & Country Electric) idea that was converted into a sketch that evolved over many revisions and culmi-nated in a bronze award that is like no other.

ASAM could have provid-ed a “trophy” but we wanted an award that demonstrated the roles of subcontrac-tors and the importance of working together with other trades and the general con-tractor to get the job done on time and under budget. Close examination of the award shows both men and women on the job site, all with tools of different trades. The attention to detail and representation of the variety of subcontractors needed on the job site is one of the things that helps this award to stand out.

Ken’s initial ideas were formulated driving back from an ASAM board meeting in Grand Rapids to his office in Zeeland. He wanted to have

several trade contractors working together to get the project off the ground. He went straight from his car to the drafting table in his office to capture the idea. His ini-tial sketch showed a variety of trades carrying a structural steel beam that none of them could carry on their own. The final award has the same concept with a general con-tractor out front leading with a blue print with several dif-ferent trades represented by men and a women carrying a steel beam with “Contractor of the Year” on it.

This past summer, eight general contrac-tors; Christman Company, Dan Vos Construction, Elzinga & Volkers, Erhardt Construction, O-A-K, Pioneer, Rockford Construction and Wolverine Building Group, were nomi-nated by subcontractors for this prestigious 2013 MCOY Award.

Continuing on the tradi-tion started four years ago by Ken Bing and the ASAM board.
