What is the MCPS?

The Multi Class Point Score or MCPS provides a simplified way for swimmers and coaches to measure and compare performances for swimmers with a classification. The MCPS takes the current world record (WR) time in each class for each event and uses a calculation to determine a matrix of times which correlate to a certain point score. This is a similar concept to the FINA point score system. In 2010 the MCPS replaced both the DIPS and MDST and will be used for JX, YPS, Paralympic Program Squad selection and Multi Class events. This provides a clearer and more simplified path for classified swimmers.

Find the MCPS tables and user guides at www.swimming.org.au in the High PerformanceHigh PerformanceHigh PerformanceHigh Performance/S/S/S/Selection Crelection Crelection Crelection Criteria iteria iteria iteria –––– Multi Class Point ScoreMulti Class Point ScoreMulti Class Point ScoreMulti Class Point Score (MCPS) section.

How is the MCPS used to calculate event results?

Because the MCPS allocates a point score to swim times it is a useful tool to determine event results. The system allows times to be compared against the WR in each class for each event. In Multi Class (MC) events swimmers of different classes compete in the same event. This means that swimmers are not necessarily competing against each other but rather the WR time for their classification.

For more information about MC competition refer to the Go Club resource Guide toGuide toGuide toGuide to ConductiConductiConductiConductinnnngggg MultiMultiMultiMulti Class CompetitionClass CompetitionClass CompetitionClass Competition, available from your State Swimming Association.

The times swum in an MC event are converted to the respective point score for all swimmers. These scores are then ordered from highest to lowest. The swimmer with the highest point score (i.e. closest to the WR) is the winner. In order to perform this process in a simple and accessible way Swimming Australia Ltd (SAL) has developed the MCPS Event Results CalculatoMCPS Event Results CalculatoMCPS Event Results CalculatoMCPS Event Results Calculatorrrr.

• computer installed with Microsoft Excel version 93-2007 or newer (The MCPS Event Results

Calculator is not supported by Microsoft Excel 2000)

• access to an Internet connection (for download only)

• meet competitor list with names and classifications of all MC swimmers.

Before the meet

Step 1: Download and save

Visit www.swimming.org.au and go to the Community/Swimmers Community/Swimmers Community/Swimmers Community/Swimmers –––– Multi Class SwimmingMulti Class SwimmingMulti Class SwimmingMulti Class Swimming section to download the MCPS Event Results Calculator.

There are separate downloads for long course and short course.

Step 3: Event set up

i. Each event may be set up prior the meet. The MCPS Event Results Calculator is pre-set with

all possible events. Use the grey tabs at the bottom of the screen to select each event.

ii. You may rename each grey event tab with specific event numbers etc. Click on the relevant

event tab. Double click the text in the tab. Type the new text. Repeat for each event tab you

wish to modify.

The first (gold) tab labelled ‘Any Event’ allows you to select an event of your choice. Select your event from the drop menu in the cell labelled “Event”. For example you would select ‘50FR’ for a 50m Freestyle event or ‘100FR’ for a 100m Freestyle event and so on. This is useful for small meets with a small number of events and competitors or for checking selected performances after a meet or even after a training session.

Step 4: Entering swimmer info

i. Enter the name of each swimmer into the ‘Name’ column. Click a cell in the ‘Name’ column.

Type the swimmers name. Repeat for each swimmer in the event.

ii. Select the gender of each swimmer by clicking the cell in the ‘M/F’ column beside the

swimmers name. Select ‘M’ for male or ‘F’ for female using the drop menu.

iii. Enter the classification of each swimmer. Click a cell in the ‘Class’ column then select the

relevant class from the drop menu. (Note: only applicable classes for the specific event will

appear in the drop menu, except in the “Any Event” tab where all classes are listed.)

Step 5: Adding additional swimmers

i. The MCPS Event Results Calculator is pre-set with enough rows for 10 swimmers. To add

additional swimmers simply click the ‘Add Row’ button.

ii. Enter the swimmers name, gender and classification as in Step 4 above.

During the meet

Step 1: Entering times

i. Once each MC event is completed you should receive the official times from the Recorder.

ii. Enter each swimmers time into the ‘Time m:s’ column. Type the time in MM:SS.00 or in

seconds. Repeat for each swimmer in the event.

iii. As the times are entered they will automatically convert to seconds in the ‘Time (s)’ column

and the point score will appear in the ‘Points’ column.

iv. Where a competitors time should not be recognised in a given event (e.g. disqualification) you can insert a text descriptor in the ‘Time m:s’ column. This will result in a zero (0) point score. Here are some suggestions:

Disqualification – DQDQDQDQ Exhibition Swimmer – XXXX Did not finish the race - DNFDNFDNFDNF

Step2: Sorting places

i. Once all times are entered click the sort button located to the right of the ‘Points’

column. The swimmers will be reordered in point score order (1 = highest point score). This

determines the event placing’s.

ii. Record the results according to the normal meet process and/or print the selected event

worksheet.

After the meet

Step 1: Record keeping

i. It is best practice to save a copy of the MCPS Event Results Calculator for each meet. This

provides a backup of the results should the times, point score or placing’s need to be

referred to after the meet.

ii. It might also be a good idea to publish the point scores along with the event results, giving

swimmers, coaches and parents access to this information after the event.

This will occur if: a) The time entered is too slow to register a point score – Refer to the MCPS matrix for the

corresponding events using the Blue (male) or Pink (female) Tabs. Refer to the appropriate class

column. Find the time swum in the appropriate class column. Check the number that appears in

the corresponding cell in column A. If the time corresponds to 0 (zero) there is no error and the

point score is 0 (zero).

b) The time was entered incorrectly – check that the time was entered as MM:SS.00MM:SS.00MM:SS.00MM:SS.00 or in seconds.

A time entered incorrectly (i.e. MM.SS.00MM.SS.00MM.SS.00MM.SS.00, or text, or text, or text, or text) will appear as 0 (zero) points.

If an invalid classification is entered in the ‘Class’ column the points will appear as ‘#VALUE!’ (E.g. an S class or SM class in a SB class event). Check that the correct class has been entered for the event. Ensure the swimmer has an eligible classification for the event.

This error may occur because Macros are not enabled or the Macro security is not set to low. Refer to ‘Step 2: Opening the Files’.

If the error reoccurs you may be using Microsoft Excel 2000 version. Check your version of Excel. The MCPS Event Results Calculator is not supported in Microsoft Excel 2000.
