MD 201 N2 NEWSLETTER — ISSN—(Online) 1837—5898

Well a lot has happened since our last newsletter. Firstly Lyn and I wish everyone a happy and successful

New Year.

It certainly hasn’t been the start that we would of liked or expected with the Bushfires taking precedence over

everything. However, good things always prevail and I will now share them.

We welcome our newest Lions Club and the FIRST Lioness Club to convert to a Lions Club in Australia the

Camden Lioness Lions Club - absolutely fabulous for them as well as our District, their Charter Night will

be held on April 4 and details will be sent out by the Cabinet Secretary. Save the date and come along and

enjoy the celebrations.

Lyn and I planned a visit to Batemans Bay Club which turned out to be the Christmas party and we had a great night with lots

of laughter and fun and I also inducted two new members. Welcome Allison and Paul Woods.

This month we visited the Sydney Baseball Club and another very casual, fun night with President Chris and all the members.

It was just what Lyn and I needed after our hectic few weeks – Thank you ladies.

Now for the sad part. Unless you been living under a rock you know that our District has been devastated by bushfires from

top to bottom. We have several of our members that have lost their homes and possessions, and there are many more that have

severe damage to their property. Our thoughts and prayer are with them.

Our District has enacted our disaster plan and the Disaster Chairman PDG Geoff Hobart has started to form the committees

that we will need to help, those members and residents that need our assistance. As we did with the Tathra Bushfires we will

not let any of our members or residents go unassisted.

I have been working with the Australian Lions Foundation. and already they have deposited funds into our District account.

PDG Geoff has sent out the disaster plan and applications to all the Clubs that are in the affected areas

I ask all our Clubs that are not directly affected to please keep fundraising and supporting our District.

Last weekend was the Council of Governors meeting and we have the support of all the District in Australia with some large

donations being forward to all the affected District in Australia.

PIP Barry Palmer has been canvasing LCIF and has secured some large donations to assist us help the affected residents.

I am extremely proud of our District and our members and thank you all for your support, Lyn and I look forward to working

with you in the coming months.

Regards

DG Gordon Matthews

1st Vice District Governor

Happy New Year to all and I could say back to work! Holidays are over for me and I am well aware that many

will be saying, what holidays.

I want to say that while I was holidaying in NZ I was very aware of what was happening here in our District. I

also want to acknowledge the immence grief, sadness and pain that many are suffering at this time. The news re-

ports were very frequent – I could say nearly constant, and the haze and smell was very obvious in Christchurch.

I could have been here at home, it seemed it was all happening so close.

DG Gordon, Lion Lyn and the Lions of Clubs down the Coast and in the Southern Highlands all raillied and

worked hard for what has seemed like weeks. Clubs throughout are very supportive and the generosity of so

many is heartening ,we are blessed to have the support of so many Clubs. Thank you so much for your service.

Lions, we all know that we have many challenges ahead for the next few years, but I am sure working together,

we can make a difference.

I have reflected on my last visits before heading off, we visited the Lions Club of Marulan and District, Kiama

where we also visited the Carers Cottage prior to the Mayoral reception and Dinner meeting. I was thrilled to

induct 3 new members into Kiama Lions Club, along with several awards..

My final visit for the year was a combined visit of Moss Vale and Kangaroo Valley, and enjoy the hospitality of

the country. Thank you to all Clubs for your hospitality & friendship during our visits.

I have attended the DGE training weekend in Sydney and will go to Chicago on 9 February for a weeks training,

where we will meet 1st International President Douglas Alexander from New York. Time is ticking by very

quickly and Singapore is rumoured to be an historic Convention.

My best wishes to all Clubs in the remaining 6 months of this Lions year.

Kindest regards

Yours in LIons

2nd Vice District

Governor

December and January brought many anxious moments for many of our Lions families in our district, the normal greeting of

“happy new year” was hard to say, especially to those affected by these very unpleasant events – drought and bushfires.

It was heart-warming to know that our Lions family throughout our district was out in full force doing what they do best –

SERVE.

Our support for the woman on the land was overwhelmingly successful. I am appreciative of the generosity of our women in

lions and their friends. Over 160 pamper boxes were distributed before Christmas to the Cumnock/Baldry area and Lake

Cargelligo and over 100 on the South Coast to fire victims. My sincere thanks to all who participated.

The messages of gratitude, appreciation and thanks are still rolling in from people near and far.

There are still many people out there who have never heard about Lions. PLEASE DON’T FORGET TO TELL YOUR

LIONS STORY.

I was chatting to a lady I met at a walk and coffee morning not long ago. Lions came up during our conversation and she

asked me what Lions was all about. I did not hesitate to tell her all I could fit in about what we were all about. She was

impressed and asked me if she could join us. I invited her to our next meeting so I will keep you all posted.

My last few club visits for 2019 was very successful and enjoyable. Helensburgh, Shellharbour, Cooma Lions and Cooma

Monaro Leos are doing good work and working well in their areas. I was warmly welcomed by all these clubs – thank you

again.

We spent the day with Shellharbour Lions Club who provided the catering for the inaugural Shellharbour Run. It was a very

busy day for them and they welcomed the support from Dapto Lions Club. Lionism at its best – neighbouring clubs helping

each other. Thank you Dapto Lions.

I spent two days in Cooma – what an eventful visit. A club, very proud of their achievements and rightly so. I had a tour of all

the town projects and many history lessons along the way. The story of the Southern Cloud took my breath away and it still

haunts me today. If ever you drive through Cooma, visit the SC memorial which is a project of the Cooma Lions. I was

fascinated by the various parks created by these members. I even had a go on the flying fox also created by the members

( I think that’s why they insisted I have a go)

My first ever in my life – what a sight!

The club’s history is well documented in several albums - a great read, the next day I visited the Cooma Monaro Leos Club

led by the dedicated lion Lee Rylie. The kids are learning great skills by belonging to the Leos club and they are involved in

meaningful projects. Their eagerness to participate in community events is evident of the good guidance and example

displayed by the Cooma Lions club.

We enjoyed a mayoral reception and met people from other service clubs who attended as well.

SERVICE CLUBS WORKING IN PERFECT HARMONY

I’m sure I will be out there visiting many more clubs in the district.

My wish for all of you as our New Year progresses is happiness, good health, good friendships and dedicated and happy ser-

vice in your lion’s journey.

Keep sparkling

Lioness Report

Hello Lionesses

I hope everyone had a lovely

Christmas and New Year with

family and friends despite the

horrific and sad Bushfire disaster

happening in NSW and Victoria

and especially in our N2 District.

I know many Lions and Lioness Clubs were involved in

helping evacuees and providing meals and emergency

supplies to fire ravaged communities.

There is a nationwide ALF Bushfire Disaster Appeal

which I know all Clubs will rally to support.

As 2020 begins I need to know what your Lioness Club

intends to do in the light of the decision to disband

Lioness Clubs in 2021.

Camden Lioness Club is now a Lions Club called

Camden Lioness Lions Club. We are extremely excited

to become independent and recognised in our own right

as a Lions Club. Our charter night is Saturday 4th April

in Camden so please come along and celebrate with us.

We are the FIRST LIONESS LIONS CLUB IN

AUSTRALIA.

I want to personally thank our Guiding Lion Gary Parker

for his expert help in transitioning us to Lions. It was a

lot of paperwork and many phone calls and e mails but

Gary was invaluable in getting the job done. We are

lucky to have Gary to help us through the inevitable “

problems and questions” we will no doubt have over the

next few months.

For the National ALF Bushfire Appeal Camden Club is

having a bucket drive in Clubs, pubs, butchers, chemists,

shops and businesses over 6 months. We are also

donating the proceeds of our cake and craft stalls to this

Appeal.

Shoalhaven Lionesses made quilts for a Domestic

Violence Raffle, donated $400 to the Stepping Out

Orphanage, raised $1021 at a garage sale, as well as their

usual assisting Bomaderry Lions at the cattle sales. Well

done Shoalhaven Club.

Oak Flats Lionesses have had a fashion parade, a Duck

Derby and have knitted and sewn for cancer carers. Well

done Oak Flats ladies.

Liverpool City Lioness Club participated in a market day

for Downs Syndrome, donated Xmas puddings to Meals

on Wheels and 500 bread rolls to OzHarvest and

collected, packaged and posted 627 pair of spectacles.

Keep up the great work Lionesses and please let me

know what your Club intends to do in the light of the

abolition of Lionesses worldwide.

AUSTRALIAN POLICE MEDAL (APM)

Leading Senior Constable Patrick Joseph STORER APM VIC

Leading Senior Constable Storer has been an operational police officer for approximately 40 years, com-

mencing his policing career in 1978. The majority of his service has been in country Victoria, including 16

years at Kyabram and for the past 11 years he has been the one member officer at the Violet Town station in

state's north east.

He has developed very strong interpersonal relationships and networks through his role as the community's

police officer, as well as through his involvement with the Lions Club, and as a Councillor with the

Strathbogie Shire Council.

As a police officer he has consistently represented Victoria Police to a high standard, and in his service to

local government and the Lions Club he has played a leadership role in the development and implementation

of a number of significant community projects. He is an excellent example of how a police officer at a one

member station serves a small community.

Leading Senior Constable Storer's leadership and ability to forge strong lasting working relationships through

an honest, forthright and engaging approach which is based on reliability, fairness, compassion and inclusive-

ness make him the epitome of a one member station police officer, and a credit to Victoria Police.

Oak Flats Lions Club donated the funds for Forbes & District Lions

Club to purchase 104 Xmas Cakes and 104 Xmas

Puddings as part of drought support to farmers in the central west

NSW. These will be distributed by Georgie's Pantry in Parkes and

Nells Pantry, Forbes as a gift from Lions.

Pictured are Sandra Milling, Natalie Quince, Derick Milling (George's

Pantry) and Forbes Lions President Graham Williams. (standing in

back) Oak Flats Lions Club also donated 8 cartons of pre-loved

children's books to be given to families in need in the area

Australian Lionsonoz member Lion John Matheson assisted the Lions Club of Ormeau Inc in their Christmas

Cake sales by setting up a Cake and Pudding Stall in conjunction with the annual

Craft Markets at his

Lifestyle Resort at Eagleby Qld.

Because Australian Lionsonoz Lions Club do not conduct their own fund raising

projects members are free to assist “Main stream” Lions Clubs in their various pro-

jects, simply gaining service hours for their efforts.

Lion John has elected to man this stall for the past six years and

although he said sales were down slightly on previous years but he was still able to

sell almost $1,000 worth of goods, so it made the project worthwhile.

Lion John then travelled to Iluka with the RV group from the Resort to enjoy a

couple of days by the seaside.

We celebrate Noel’s life and his proud legacy in helping to start the sale of Lions Christmas cakes.

Noel worked with the late Ern Smith to introduce the Lions Christmas Cake program to this district back in

1965. The story goes that Ern suggested to his District Governor that Lions should sell Christmas Cakes and

it be expanded to a National program. His District Governor told him he was crazy. Nevertheless the idea

was formulated, moved, seconded and adopted that Lion Ern Smith be given just one week to form a plan to

bring his idea into being. Ern and Noel rolled up their sleeves and got on with it and the rest is history!

The first Lions Christmas Cakes sold 13,470 in its first year and is now synonymous with the Lions brand.

Annual national sales are around $6.5 million and with over $50 million been raised since sales began.

Noel playing a vital role during the 1960s and 1970s in Lions fund raising events to setup new services and

amenities for the Queanbeyan community, such as:

• An adult scooter race three years running to raise money for a filtration plant for the much needed

Queanbeyan Swimming Pool

• Winter clothing for the needy

• An annual Christmas party for senior citizens

• Fund raising to start what became George Forbes House

• Fund raising for a shelter for homeless women

• Fundraising for an ambulance, and

• A kilometre of dollars for purchase of hospital equipment.

Noel featured prominently in the Club’s 60th anniversary event in 2017 and in the Club’s hosting of the

Lions 201N2 District Convention in October 2017.

In November 2018 Noel joined with fellow Lions legend Peter Stapleton OAM and QPRC Mayor Tim

Overall to cut the ribbon to officially open the Lions Community Bookshop.

We remember and give thanks for Noel’s great tradition of service in Lions and we extend our deep

sympathy to his wife Joan and family at his passing.

Vale PDG Noel Reid OAM. RIP

AUSTRALIAN LIONS

HEARING DOGS

2020 – A very Happy (& busy) New Year.

Here we are January 2020, our New Year has started with a rush. We’re up to “our ears” and “doggy ears” training our next group of Australian Lions Hearing Dogs that are currently in various stages of training, some just beginning their journey, whilst others are part way through, and sev-eral are in the final stages before delivery. It’s wonderful to see the look on the new owner’s face when we arrive, and then at the end of the week as we leave, they know we will not forget this dog we’ve trained and delivered, nor do we for-get the owner. We’re always there if they need us, only a phone call away any time.

Multiple District 201 Convention - Adelaide SA. From 15th

– 18th

May 2020.

How time flies – 4 months to go. Mark your Calendars and Diaries

now so you don’t forget. We hope as many Lions and Partners as possible Australia wide

will come to Adelaide to: “Meet us in May.”

Lions “Make a Date” to visit our ALHD stand at Convention,

where we’ll have trainee Australian Lions Hearing Dogs in attendance and you’re

encouraged to meet and greet our staff members all weekend, and you never know, you may also find some

of our Foster Puppies and their Carers there too.

Then we would love you to “Make the Time” to visit our Training Centre.

There will be organised tours through our Training facility on both Friday and Saturday which will include

dog demonstrations, and for anyone unable to make it on one of the tours during Convention, we plan to

open the training centre to all who wish to visit on the days following the Convention. We’ve made several

opportunities available for Lions and Partners to learn more about the ALHD Program during and after the

MD Convention, so now it’s up to you to “Take up our offer” whilst you’re in Adelaide. What are you

waiting for? See you soon!

Celebrating over 20 Years Service to Australian Lions Hearing Dogs. Former CEO PCC Bill Holmes OAM retired in 2016, and was presented with the first “Bill Holmes” award. This new

award was created as a way for ALHD to acknowledge those who support, promote and contribute to the program in the

same spirit that Bill has for over 20 years.

Linda Harvey: received her award on 9/10/16 at our Open Day. Linda started work at the training

centre in 1996, and has trained numerous dogs, however her two favourites were kelpie crosses named

Copper & Lexy. She said it was a pleasure to work with them. Linda believes our program

at ALHD is amazing, & feels very lucky and incredibly proud to be part of it.

Belinda Henschke: her first role at ALHD was Kennel Manager in 1999 before becoming a dog

trainer. Her first dog to train and deliver was Isabella in 2000. Early this year Belinda completed 20

years service to ALHD and was presented with a “Bill Holmes” award. She is now the ALHD Office

Manager and will have a hands on role in pushing the training centre into the exciting future.

Mary Knight: celebrated 20 years with ALHD on 1/11/2019. Starting as Kennel Manager before

moving into dog training. Mary has been involved in over 100 placements, with 70 of those being

dogs she has personally trained. In the last 18 months Mary has been instrumental in developing

our Puppy Program, and utilising her vast experience to help ALHD grow. Mary received her “Bill

Holmes “award at the recent Christmas Luncheon.

Congratulations to our staff members above. So proud you’re on our team!
