Allowing for raining in eams and creaing a far more realisic raining environmen han
ever seen were he main drivers behind he developmen of he new sae-of-he-ar
drilling rig simulaor complex a Maersk raining in Svendborg, Denmark.
In he wake of he Macondo acciden in 2010, Maersk Drilling and
Maersk raining esablished a ask force o deermine how o build
furher on he solid foundaion of IWCF and ake raining of he
offshore crews o he nex level. A very visible oucome of his work
is he highly advanced drilling simulaor complex siuaed a Maersk
raining in Svendborg, Denmark.
One of he main findings idenified by he group was he need for
a broader approach o well conrol raining. In addiion o providing
a more comprehensive well conrol scenario program and a near
real-life environmen hrough use of he specific designs of Maersk
Drilling’s rigs, he need for increased focus on he ineracion
beween crew members in various funcions on he rig was poined
ou as a key facor in dealing wih well conrol scenarios.
“Afer he acciden in he Gulf of Mexico, crew raining and com-
peence are a he op of every oil company’s agenda. Tis drilling
rig simulaor complex will provide he mos sophisicaed raining
available in he marke and we will be able o simulae exreme well
conrol siuaions o ensure ha our crews have he necessary ex-
perience o deal wih he scenarios on board,” Claus V. Hemmingsen,
CEO of Maersk Drilling and Parner in A.P. Moller – Maersk.

TEAM BASED WELL CONTROL TRAINING
“Acciden repor s coninuously poin owards communicaion and
handling of he siuaion as he roo cause of mos incidens. Te
fac is ha communicaion is a big par of a drilling operaion, how-
ever, looking a he indusry raining offerings we see a significan
gap as we don’ have any faciliies allowing for ha kind of raining.
Te new simulaor complex offers jus ha,” Claus V. Hemming-sen, CEO of Maersk Drilling and Parner in A.P. Moller – Maersk.
In addiion o he drilling simulaor iself, he purpose buil, hree
dimensional complex includes a rig conrol room simulaor, an
engine room simulaor and crane simulaors. Tis will enable
inegraed raining for he enire crew by allowing for ineracions
wih oher operaions on he rig. Wihin he eam environmen,
inclusive of he clien if r equesed, he crew can now develop heir
pracical well conrol skills. A feaure no off ered by any oher
raining provider.
In addiion o he insrucors evaluaing he echnical skills of hecrew members, human facor specialis are monioring he com-
municaion and ineracion during raining o provide feedback on
his imporan aspec as well.

INDIVIDUALIZED TRAINING ON SPECIFIC RIG DESIGNS
Te high end rigs in Maersk Drilling’s flee can be recreaed vir ually
in he simulaor o include all rig specific equipmen and conrol
sysems. Tis will enable he crews o rain specifically in he sur-
roundings hey will be me by when on board he rig.
Te sysem simulaes various well conrol scenarios above andbeyond he requiremens from IWCF and enables pracicing of a
wide range of advanced drilling operaions including he simulaion
of he well c onrol incidens ha have aken place in he indusry.
Te sysem also includes a downhole visualizaion ool, which will
improve he in-deph undersanding of he drilling process for he
users.
Drillers will r eceive realistic and r eal-time feedback on t heir
operational performance as well as their interaction. Combined
with the training in teams this will create a much more realistic
work situation than pr ovided by tr aditional drilling simulators.
In addiion o raining, he drilling simulaor offers he possibilit of
deailed operaional planning for drilling of difficul wells as hese
can be rehearsed in a vir ual environmen idenical o wha will be
experienced offshore.
