If you look at a map, it looks like a fish! In fact, in a Maori story, it was a fish, a long, long time ago. This is the story of how the North Island got its shape. Many years ago, three giant brothers lived in Hawaii. One of the brothers, Maui, was special. He was very clever and very strong. And he loved playing tricks on his brothers. One day, his brothers decided to go fishing. But they wanted to go alone, without Maui, because they didn’t like his tricks. So they got up early, got into their canoe and went out to sea. But Maui tricked them! He hid in the bottom of the canoe. When he came out, they weren’t happy! “We’re going to take you home right now!” they said. “You can’t,” said Maui. “We’re in the middle of the ocean now. It’s too far!” So they all started fishing. Suddenly, Maui felt something. “I’ve got a fish!” he shouted. He started to pull. The fish was very big and very heavy, and Maui asked his brothers for help. They pulled and pulled and then … an island appeared! The brothers had pulled an island up from the bottom of the ocean! They were very surprised. The island-fish was flat – it didn’t have any mountains or valleys. Maui jumped onto the new island-fish. “Stay here” he said to his brothers. “I’ll come back soon. Wait for me! Don’t eat the fish!” But his brothers didn’t wait. “I’m hungry,” said one. “Don’t listen to Maui,” said the other. So they cut into the island-fish and started to eat it. Their cuts made mountains and valleys on the island fish. They made the cliffs and caves. In fact, they made the North Island of New Zealand. That’s why the Maoris call it Te Ika a Maui – the fish of Maui. But, New Zealand has two big islands. If the North Island is a fish, then what is the South Island? The Maoris call it Te Waka a Maui – Maui’s canoe. They say that the small island at the end of the South Island is the anchor! And that’s the story of how the islands of New Zealand got their shapes. He lived in a castle with his wife and their four beautiful children. But one day, his wife died. Lir and the children were very sad. A few years later, Lir married again. His second wife was called Aoife. She loved Lir and at first she loved his children. But soon, she stopped loving the children, because she didn’t want to share Lir with them. So she made a terrible plan. One day, she took the children to a lake. While they were playing in the water, she said some magic words. The water turned to fog, and Aoife started to laugh. She laughed and laughed. The children looked at each other and they saw that they were swans – beautiful white swans! “You aren’t human now!” Aoife said “You’re swans. But I have left you one human thing. I have left you your voices. You can talk and you can sing. Your voices will be the most beautiful in the world.” Then she said “You will be human again in many years, when you hear the sound of a church bell.” Lir looked all over the castle for his children, but he couldn’t find them. Then, one of the swans flew to him and told him the story. He was furious, and he sent Aoife away. Lir visited his children on the lake every day. He listened to their beautiful singing and he was very sad. Eventually he died, and the swans flew away. Many years later, the swans were living on a small lake near the sea. One day, they were singing their beautiful song when old man called Mochua heard them. He asked “Are you the children of Lir?” They told him their story. Mochua invited the swan children to live with him. He lived near a small church and he decided to make a bell for it. He found lots of old swords and shields, which he used for their metal, and he started to work. At last, the bell was ready. As Mochua rang it, a white fog appeared on the lake. The wind blew the fog over the swans, then the fog changed to all the colours of the rainbow. The wind blew the fog away and the children reappeared. And that is the story of the Children of Lir.

So he picked up his axe, went out of the house and went to look for a tree.Soon, he found a big, dead tree near the river. He climbed up the tree, and sat on one of the branches. Then he took out his axe and started to cut the branch. As he was cutting it, one of his friends walked past. Everybody knew that this friend was a very clever man. He looked up and saw the man in the tree. “Hey!” he said “Don’t do that! Don’t cut the branch you’re sitting on. If you do, you’ll fall down and kill yourself!”“Don’t worry,” said the woodcutter, “I won’t fall down.”“OK – it’s your decision!” said his clever friend. The woodcutter continued cutting, – then suddenly, the branch broke! He fell to the ground. “Ouch” he said. “Oh no, my friend was right! First the branch broke, then I fell down – so now I’m dead!”When his neighbours found him, he didn’t speak and he didn’t move, because he thought he was dead.“He’s dead!” they said. They picked him up and carried him back to the village. “Stop!” shouted the woodcutter. “Don’t forget my axe.” “This way is the fastest,” said one. “No, that way is the fastest!” said another. The woodcutter pointed to the hill. “That’s the best way,” he said. So they went over the hill. When they arrived at his house, his family asked, “What happened?” “He was lying under a tree,” his friends said “A branch fell on him and killed him.”“No, no,” said the woodcutter. “It didn’t happen like that! I was cutting wood and I fell out of the tree, and now I’m dead!” Then his wife said, “Are you sure he’s dead?”“Of course I’m dead!” said the woodcutter. “My clever friend said I would fall out of the tree and die. And that is what happened. I fell out of the tree and now I’m dead.”“Oh,” said his wife. “I see.”Then she said, “But wait a minute. He didn’t see you fall. Perhaps you aren’t dead!”“Of course I’m dead!” said the woodcutter. Then he got up, picked up his axe and went out of the house. “And now,” he said, “I’m going to get some wood for the fire.”

Ask the questions on the posterDivide the class into five groups. Each group takes turns to go up to the poster and look.

Poster questions:Find these things in the poster:• two rivers in Europe (Amstel, Vltava)• three rivers in Asia (Huangpu, Chang Jiang / Yangtze,

Ganga)• two capital cities on rivers (Amsterdam, Prague)• a very ancient city (Varanasi)• a city which has changed a lot since the 1990s (Shanghai)Write these sentences on the board. While one group is looking at the poster, ask the other groups to say if they are true or false.• The river in Prague is called the Vltava. (true)• Shanghai is one of the world’s oldest cities. (false –

Varanasi is)• The Narnia films use Prague. (true)

Show and tell!Ask the class to bring in their information on other river cities. In groups, pupils show their river cities and, if possible, find them on maps. Make a display of their information.

Game: Invention anagrams• Write the cities: Amsterdam Shanghai Prague Varanasi

on the board. Divide the class into pairs. Give them one minute to write all the English words they can using the letters in the cities (e.g. there, dam). Feed back the words onto the board and check their spellings. The pair with the most words wins.

SUGGESTED WORDSriver, steps, red, have, give, pen, ant, heart, earth, rat, hear, get, sing, right, night, team, meat, shirt, shine, vase

Blists Hill Victorian TownBlists Hill Victorian Town museum is about an hour from Birmingham, in the UK. Industry started here in the 18th century, and there were many ironworks, mines and factories in the area. The River Severn is near here, and huge wooden boats used to carry materials and products up and down the river.

The people who work at Blists Hill wear old-fashioned costumes, and the shops and buildings look just like buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. There is a mine shaft that goes up and down, bringing coal from underground. There’s a high street with a bank where you can exchange your money for old money, and there’s a chemist with a dentists’ chair and dentists’ tools – they look quite frightening! You can buy hats, lace and clothes in the clothes shop, and you can even get a drink in the pub!

One of the things visitors like best is the Victorian school. Visitors sit on wooden benches, and a very strict teacher teaches a lesson. She asks the questions, and if the visitors don’t give the right answer, she throws chalk at them!
