Industrial & Municipal ClarifiersMonroe Environmental specializes in the clarifica-tion of water and wastewater no matter what the application. We have produced countless water and wastewater clarifiers for industrial manufacturers and municipal treatment plants throughout our 40-plus years in the pollution control industry. Flexible design capabilities combined with our successful history as a reliable, straightforward, honest manu-facturer gives our customers the peace of mind to know that working with Monroe will be a beneficial endeavor. Our customers have come to rely on the efficiencies of our manufacturing process to deliver high quality, low cost systems that install quickly and work properly the first time they are used.

Monroe Environmental offers unique value that can almost never be realized with competitive clarifier suppliers. Monroe circular clarifiers and their internals are fully engineered, manufactured, assembled, pre-fit, and tested in our own shop. This means that when the equipment arrives for instal-lation in the field, there are no surprises or misfits that will slow down the installation process and drive up cost. Our steel tank clarifiers ship as pre-fit, bolt-together assemblies so there is a minimum

amount of field welding required versus other suppliers. For concrete tank clarifier internals, no field welding is required. As a result, our custom-ers realize significant savings in both the time and cost associated with their clarifier installa-tions. Smaller steel tank clarifiers ship as com-plete turnkey systems, completely assembled and ready for installation and operation.

Industrial manufacturers and municipal treatment plants look to Monroe as their preferred supplier for circular clarifiers. Our unique design and manufac-turing capabilities ensure that all of our customers get the perfect system for their water and waste-water clarification needs regardless of industry or application.

Primary Wastewater ClarifiersMonroe Environmental’s primary

circular clarifiers are designed to receive raw wastewater after it has been pre-screened to remove large objects and grit. This primary sedimentation tank will produce a homogeneous liquid capable of being treated biologically and a sludge that can be separately treated or processed.

Primary Clarifier• Sufficient tank size and low energy

inlet geometry allows sludge to settle and floating solids and oils to rise to the surface.

• If a standard center inlet design will not provide full flocculation of the sus-pended solids, an energy-dissipating inlet (EDI) will be utilized. This type of inlet distributes the flow into the flocculation zone and imparts a tan-gential stirring action that decreases settling time.

• Mechanical flocculation and treatment with chemical coagulants are available, depending on the application.

• An enlarged feedwell for enhanced flocculation can be designed to provide increased residence time that aids floc formation and improves settling.

• Monroe Environmental incorporates durable drives and bottom scraping rakes that will continuously remove settled sludge. The rake employs multiple bottom scraping blades that are angled to ensure that all settling sludge is captured and brought to the central sludge well.

• Truss type or cable-supported rake mechanisms are available.

• Floating matter in primary waste-water clarifiers includes grease, oils, leaves, and plastics.

• Typically, floating matter is skimmed by a skimmer arm that is supported by the sludge rake and rotates with it around the tank. The floating matter is pushed over the beach plate by the wipers attached to the skimmer arm and into a scum box attached to the tank wall. Collected material then travels to the scum outlet piping. A ducking skimmer system is also avail-able with fixed, full radius collection troughs.

• A scum baffle prevents floating matter from reaching the effluent launder. Proper dimensions and positioning of the baffle prevents carryover.

• An appropriately sized V-notch weir assures uniform laminar flow throughout the clarifier.

• The effluent is essentially homoge-neous and ready for aeration and biological treatment.

Secondary Wastewater ClarifiersMonroe Environmental’s secondary

circular clarifiers for wastewater are designed to provide a high quality effluent suitable for discharge to the environment or further treatment.

Secondary Clarifier• Typically the influent will be mixed

liquor from an aeration tank incorporating an activated sludge process. Microorganisms metabolize the biological waste that exists after primary clarification.

• A central energy-dissipating inlet (EDI) can be used, or Monroe Environmental will design a periph-eral feed system that distributes influent around the perimeter of the tank, and aids in activated sludge secondary settling.

• The Monroe Environmental second-ary clarifier effectively separates the biological floc and colloidal solids to produce wastewater with very low levels of organic material and suspended matter.

• Mechanical flocculation and chemical treatment are available.

• An enlarged flocculation zone can be designed which allows mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) that are broken up during transport from the aeration basin to recombine. The larger floc that results will settle more effectively.

• Typically a radial tube header with orifices and manifold employing hydraulic suction will be designed to remove all settled solids from the tank and return them either to the head of the activated sludge process (Return Activated Sludge) or to further solid waste treatment (Waste Activated Sludge).

• Alternatively, depending on the application, Monroe Environmental will design a riser pipe mechanism that uses hydraulic suction to effec-tively remove settled solids.

• Drives are carefully selected to assure durability and long life.

• Monroe Environmental can provide a traditional or ducking skimmer to remove floating material.

• Monroe Environmental’s custom designed scum baffles and V-notch weirs will assure a high quality effluent.

Monroe Environmental manufactures several types of water purification clarifi-ers, primarily intended for municipal use in the process of making ground water or surface water safe for drinking.

Flocculating ClarifierThis clarifier has an enlarged feedwell

and provides efficient mechanical floc-culation. This may be combined with the addition of chemical flocculating agents. Floating matter will be skimmed off the surface and sinking matter will be raked off the tank bottom.

Solids Contact ClarifierThis clarifier combines the functions

of chemical treatment, mixing, floccula-tion, and sedimentation.

• This clarifier may be used for lime softening, colorant removal, and removal of magnesium and iron.

• The solids-contact clarifier employs several radial collection and outlet launders.

• The treatment chemicals are added to the influent. A mechanical flocculating well provides sludge

recycling, combining previously settled precipitates from the tank bottom with the treated influent. Flow then proceeds downward out of the central well and outward to the clarification zone where flocculated particles settle. The settled particulate is then raked inward to be re-circulated, but some is discarded by the sludge pump to maintain steady conditions.

• The clean water effluent flows out through the radial outlet launders.

API Separators

Oil Skimmers

Monroe custom oil/water separators are designed per American Petroleum Institute standards (API) for above and below ground installations. The Monroe API Separator is designed for the remov-al of free oil and solids. If the removal of soluble substances is required, Monroe can provide additional treatment equipment or will recommend other Monroe Clarifiers.

Gravity differential settling is used to separate the oil from water. Monroe engineers will evaluate the type and state of the oil and the characteristics of the waste stream to determine the proper design and size of the separator. Oil globule size, specific gravity of the oil and wastewater, temperature and viscosity should be considered. Suspended solids will also be settled

from the wastewater and provisions of this will be part of the design.

Monroe is able to provide API Separators in large shop-fabricated and assembled units to reduce installation costs. Prefabricated assemblies are avail-able up to 14 feet wide by 140 feet long.

Optional equipment includes drag conveyor, surface skimmer, and vapor cover when required.

• Custom designed for the application

• Prefabricated units from 1 to 500 GPM

• Mechanical surface skimmer and pipe skimmer available

• Mechanical drag conveyor available

The Monroe Oil Skimmer is heavily constructed for industrial applications and consists of an endless belt, an electric motor and drive unit and a complete enclosure. The belt is suspended from a pulley, with the lower portion immersed in an oil supporting liquid.

As the belt descends into the liquid, the floating oil adheres to both sides of the belt. Self-adjusting wipers mounted in a staggered position wipe the oil from the belt. The recovered oil drains into a trough for deposit into a storage tank or containers.

The Monroe Oil Skimmer operates unattended in any area of tranquil oil accumulation. It will continuously recover

floating oil in a condition that permits disposal or reclamation for other indus-trial purposes.

Many different industries can prevent water pollution by recovering oily waste with a Monroe Oil Skimmer. Even the lightest oils from food processing can be easily removed.

• Superior belt type oil skimmer

• Removes tramp oil from process liquids

• Prevents oil pollution

• Recovers valuable oil products

Clarifier RebuildsRebuilding and replacing the internals of a

concrete or steel tank clarifier is a quick, cost-effective solution versus constructing an entirely new system. The clarifier tanks often maintain a suitable operating condition while the skimmer arm, center well, drive assembly, and sludge rakes corrode and wear beyond an acceptable level. In this case, a Monroe Environmental Clarifier Rebuild is the perfect solution to restore the clarifier to its peak operating performance level, ensuring several decades of future use.

The experienced team of Monroe Environmental engineers and shop technicians make rebuilding an existing clarifier an easy, efficient process. We simply take measurements of the current equipment and provide removal and replacement. If there are modifications that must be made to existing systems, we can easily incorporate them into the replacement equip-ment because we combine engineering and manufacturing capabilities under one roof.

The Monroe Advantage The benefits of a Monroe Environmental

Clarifier Rebuild are straightforward and simple:

• Lower cost

• Minimal clarifier downtime These benefits are realized because we are

able to fully assemble clarifier equipment in our shop, including the drive and center well. We inspect and test every bolt, weld, and panel to make sure that each component fits together perfectly before it is shipped to site and installed. This key step can be the difference between a few days of simple installation or weeks of fitting, engineering, and re-working equipment in the field. By reducing installation time, projects can often be completed ahead of schedule with minimal labor cost.

CASE STUDY: Replacement of Two 130 ft Secondary Circular Clarifiers at a 25MGD Wastewater Treatment Plant

BEFORE Left & center: Rust and corrosion of the old equipment made a Clarifier Rebuild necessary for proper future operation. Monroe Environmental sent a team to the site to inspect the old equipment and take the necessary measurements. Monroe oversaw the removal of the clarifier internals and designed a new system to perfectly fit the existing concrete tank. Above Right: Monroe’s team of shop technicians and AWS certified welders fabricated the new steel equipment and fully assembled the unit in their shop. After testing and alignment was completed, the new internals were galvanized (per customer specifications) and shipped to site for replacement.
