Greetings to families and friends of Waimea College.

The end of term is fast approaching and students and staff are making the most of the last important days of Term 2.

Educat ion Review Of f ice Repor tThe Education Review Office visited Waimea College towards the end of Term 1 and we are now in receipt of the ERO Report for Waimea College. ERO have recently introduced a new process to evaluate school practice. It was pleasing to see Waimea College receive the top rating of ?Strong?. This is a testament to the outstanding efforts of our teachers and support staff in supporting our young people. A copy of the full report can be found on our school website, but I take this opportunity to share some of the highlights and remarks:

Key st rengt hs of t he school For sustained improvement and future learner success, the school can draw on existing strengths in:

- a strong relationship-building culture that promotes a calm, productive learning environment to meet all learners? needs

- a responsive local curriculum that recognises the school?s growing diversity

Next st eps For sustained improvement and future learner success, priorities for further development are in:

New Proper t y Building ProjectPleasing progress continues to be made with the construction of our new Teaching block at the north-east end of the campus. The foundations are due to be laid this week. We look forward to keeping you up-to-date with progress.

PTA Event : ?Screenagers? The Waimea College PTA are hosting an event on Thursday 1 August (Week 2 Term 3) for the special screening of a film called ?Screenagers?. This film probes into the vulnerable corners of family life and depicts messy struggles over social media, video games and academics and offers solutions on how we can help our kids navigate the digital world. This promises to be very useful and informative so please come along. More detailed information relating to this event is on page 10 of this newsletter.

All the best for the last week of term and the upcoming school holidays!

Semper Contendite,

3 - WAIMEA COLLEGE NEWSLETTER - JUNE 2019

Waimea College was concerned at unfair school funding changes announced in Budget 2019 that see our College and families disadvantaged by up to $250,000 next year (and in subsequent years) compared to other local Colleges.

The Government?s original promise was that all schools would receive $150 a pupil as a replacement for parental donations. The Government has now changed this policy so as to only apply to schools decile 1-7. This means Waimea College (decile 8) misses out. There are 700 other schools nationally and 16 in our region also adversely affected. However, Waimea, is the only affected College in the region.

This policy significantly disadvantages Waimea College relative to Nayland College and both Nelson Colleges despite our colleges servicing very similar communities. It means our parents will be asked to contribute about $170 to the College while other parents of secondary students in the region do not.

The decile system is arbitrary with the both the Government and Education Review Office saying it is inaccurate and out dated, yet it is being used to disadvantage Waimea?s funding and or families.

The College was unable to make a submission on the law change introduced with the Budget due to it being rushed through. We want to register our concern with a petition from the College.

Please help us to address this unfairness and reduction in expected Government funding to the college by signing this petition at Waimea College Reception or sign online at www.petitions.govt.nz

We want to secure as many signatories as possible from parents, teachers and college supporters (signatories need to be over 18 years old and be either New Zealand residents or citizens).

SPORTS REPORT

4 - WAIMEA COLLEGE NEWSLETTER - JUNE 2019

Cross Count ry: Mat t Bowen , Luke Clat wor t hy and Heidi St ephens have gone on to take part in the NZSS Cross Country in Timaru where Matt placed 15th out of 120 in the Junior 4000m. Heidi finished 79th in a very tough Year 9 girls race. Luke competed in the 6000m Senior division where he placed 29th.

Equest r ian: After a bit of a hiatus, Equestrian was reinstated onto the TSS calendar. A great event was hosted by the Motueka Pony Club at Marchwood Park in Motueka. Fourteen teams entered from various schools. Riders representing Waimea College at this event were: Lynda Car t er , Georgia Livingst on , Talia Manson (2nd in dressage) and Macy Morgan placed 5th in the Waimea Gold team. Keely Moir , Am elia Parnwell, Kayla Sear le and Br it ney Ter r is were in the Waimea Winners team. Well done girls and ponies.

Squash: The TSS Squash tournament was held in Nelson and Waimea College had great results, with our girls team placing 2nd in Division A and 4th in Division B and our boys team taking home the overall win in Division 1. Our boys team is now looking toward their National campaign in Tauranga in August.

Or ient eer ing: Paulina Har r ison took part in the NZSS Orienteering trials in Auckland recently ? we look forward to hearing the named team very shortly.

TSS Badm int on: We had seventeen students take part in the TSS Badminton tournament in Motueka last week. Our top team narrowly missed the win in the final against Garin College, by one set. However, Sam Til ler and Anna Pregizer remained unbeaten throughout the tournament. Sum m er Cole, Brodie Coll ins, Jacob Hansen , Tom Lam s, Max Malcolm , Char lie McFar land , Bailey O?Malley, Jam es O?Malley, Maren Pregizer , Sam Shell ing, Lucas Sibbald, Sam Sm it h , Mike Wang and Thea Whit ley all played well and had a great time.

The Cashm ere Exchange was held here this year. We didn?t put on the best weather, however, great games and great sportsmanship were shown from everyone. Our boys Football team won 3-1, our girls Football drew 2-2, a loss for Netball 28-40 and Basketball boys 64-70, unfortunately meaning we lost the shield for this year. A huge thank you goes out to those families that hosted billets and the volunteers that helped with umpiring, scoring and officiating for the day.

Mar lborough Gir ls exchange was also held here at the college and, once again, the weather was less than stunning. Despite this, our teams played very well. Our Senior A Basketball won comfortably, our Senior A Netball team had a very close match up but unfortunately lost by 3 points, and our 1st XI Football team took home the win with 5 points to their 3.

Advent ure Racers: We had a team of Adventure Racers take part in the qualifier for the Hillary Challenge in Geraldine in late May. Despite a somewhat last-minute decision to attend this event, the team came away with great results and have qualified for next year?s race in

Tongariro. Well done to Max Barclay, Leila Challenger , Sarah Char les, Daniel Cr im p, Macgregor Jones, Olivia Lam ber t , Gus Sm it h and Mikayla Wr ight .

There is plenty of sport to watch each week, the weekly sports draws are posted on the Waimea College Sports facebook page and on the Sports noticeboard each week so no reason not to get out and support our many teams.

On a weekly basis there are the following teams to watch U16 Rugby, Waimea Combined 1st XV rugby (home games only), 1st XV Girls rugby Wednesday evening, 17 netball teams at the courts on a Saturday, Senior A netball ? Thursday nights at Saxton, Basketball ? Senior A boys Tuesdays nights at Saxton, Senior A girls Tuesday and Wednesday nights at Saxton, 12 basketball teams playing at Saxton Stadium or Jack Robbins Memorial stadium Wednesday nights, Volleyball ? Legends league Monday nights, 1st XI Football girls (Saturday mornings) and 2nd XI Football girls (Saturday afternoons).

Please contact the sports office if you have any questions or queries regarding upcoming events by emailing [email protected].

We love to hear of any news regarding our individual students or sports teams so please keep us informed.

SPECIAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENTThe Tasman Cross Country competitions is for all schools in the Tasman region. In the AWD category (Athletes With Disabilit ies) Waimea College took out the top 4 positions. Congratulations Sebast ian Crow , Will iam MacDonald, Blake le Com t e and Johanson Sam uel who were outstanding representatives for their school.

The Estuary Place reserve, off lower Queen Street, is 112 plants further towards its goal thanks to a morning of planting by the Special Education Department in co-ordination with Environment manager, Richard Hilton of the TDC. The ground was extremely stony and the clay stuck to our boots and wheelchair wheels like glue, but the students were pleased with their work.

PERFORMING ARTSAssem bly Band: Our Assembly Band recently visited Tahunanui Primary School and performed at their assembly, to rapturous applause from the students. They had the room rocking when they joined forces with the Tahunanui School band to perform ?Johnny Be Good?. Thanks to our music teacher, Brett Smith for organising this opportunity.

Sm okefreerockquest ? Nelson 2019: Smokefreerockquest 2019 hit town again recently with a record 15 bands from Waimea College competing. This is always a hotly contested event with five of our bands making it through to the finals. On the finals night, the Theatre Royal was rocking with a sellout crowd. Waimea College band ?Blind Eye? (Jack Roll inson , Jake Lyt h , Brook lyn Logan , Connor Field and Oscar Pahl) took out 3rd place, along with awards for People?s Choice, Best Song and Best Crowd Engagement. Congratulations to all our entries and a huge, huge thank you to Nick Sharpe and Brett Smith for all the extra-curricular hours they put in to work with the bands.

Showquest : ?Natural disasters globally cause catastrophic damage, which results in either pulling a nation together in a time of need or tearing it apart by not helping or noticing others who suffer. Leaving your home is a scary experience; not knowing what lies ahead is extremely daunting. During the recent fires, that shook the country, what did Nelson do? Waimea College will now portray the devastation and effect of the fires and how the community came together to support one another.? This is the synopsis for the dance thirty-eight of our students performed at ?Showquest? recently at the Trafalgar Centre. Senior dance students choreographed the piece, with live music written and performed by Jack Roll inson . We took second place, plus awards for Best Choreography and Best Live Music. Go to ht t ps:/ / showquest .nz/nelson/ to view the video of all the performances.

New Zealand Dance Com pany: Whilst in Nelson recently to perform ?Kiss the Sky?, the NZ Dance Company took time out to present a workshop to our senior dance students. Two company members worked for two hours with our students teaching them technique and excerpts from ?Kiss the Sky?.

7 - WAIMEA COLLEGE NEWSLETTER - JUNE 2019

INTERNATIONAL NEWSTerm 2 has again been a very busy term which has just flown by!

During Queens Birthday Weekend 25 students, accompanied by Ms Morgan and Hayley Roper, set off on a roadtrip - with Hanmer Springs being the first stop on the way. The next day they headed off to Christchurch where they went to the Antarctic Centre, followed by iceskating, shopping, and exploring all the sights of Christchurch. On the way back to Nelson they travelled via Kaikoura where they were very fortunate to experience Whale Watching and also saw seals and dolphins.

By all accounts it was an amazing trip and despite the cold - and a touch of seasickness for some - everyone had an awesome time. Special thanks to Ms Morgan, who organised everything, and also to Hayley. We are very lucky to have such dedicated staff who give up their holidays to ensure our international students get to experience the very best of what Nelson and New Zealand has to offer during their time with us.

This term we also sent 30 students off Sea Kayaking in the Abel Tasman ? this is an annual event organised by NMIT in conjunction with Abel Tasman Kayaks, and run by NMIT Adventure Tourism students.

FishnChip night was held last Friday which was well attended by several students and their respective host families. These events are always a good chance for families to meet up and get to know each other. Thanks very much to those that were able to join us.

Don?t forget to check out our FB and Instagram pages for all our pictures and video:

https://www.facebook.com/WaimeaCollegeInternationalStudents/https://www.instagram.com/waimea_international/

Sadly, it is almost time to say goodbye to another 22 wonderful students. We will miss them all, and hope they enjoyed their time at Waimea as much as we enjoyed having them. The flip side of the coin is that we get to welcome 22 new ones next term ? plus another nine short term students!!

A huge thanks, as always, to our amazing homestay families ? we couldn?t do any of this without your unwavering support. You rock!! Enjoy your holidays ? and we will see you all in Term 3.

On Friday 16 June, 7 Year of out 10 students competed in the 2019 Japanese National Trivia Contest.

Regional competitions are held across the country and teams answered questions on Japanese general knowledge. This year one of the two teams from Waimea College walked away with 1st prize. Team winners were Noah Fay, Tom Lam s and Lucia Evans. This makes the third time for Waimea College to walk away with the trophy during the 5 years that the competition has been held. The second team, comprising Mack Allred, Im ogen Vlugt er , Joseph Busbr idge and Paige Gil l took away the prize for best costume.

This year there was also a prize for the top scoring school and Waimea walked away with this prize too. Big congratulations from their Sensei Mrs Edens who knows how much time and effort they all put in to make this happen!

PARENT/CAREGIVER INFORMATION

NZQA Subject Scholarships . . . Waimea College offers students the chance to have a go at getting subject scholarships through NZQA. Have a chat with your young person, and see if they are keen to reach beyond and challenge themselves to have a go at gaining a Scholarship. New Zealand Scholarship provides recognition and monetary reward to top students. Candidates are expected to demonstrate high-level critical thinking, abstraction and generalisation, and to integrate, synthesise and apply knowledge, skills, understanding and ideas to complex situations. Scholarship exams are, therefore, an ideal way for highly-able and/or highly-curious students to challenge themselves beyond the regular curriculum.

Waimea College is offering Scholarship study across a range of subjects. Interested students should talk with their teacher or the Head of Department if they wish to take up the challenge. Year 12 students could consider making an early start by attending these Scholarship sessions in preparation for next year. After-all, as Winston Churchill said, ?Continuous effort, not strength or intelligence, is the key to unlocking our potential.? As of this year, there is no fee attached to sitting a scholarship exam. Year 12 or 13 interested students should see Mr Bainbridge if they are keen, or talk to their subject teachers. For more details head to: https://www.nzqa.govt.nz/qualifications-standards/awards/new-zealand-scholarship/

SCREENAGERS. . . The Waimea College PTA are thrilled to present SCREENAGERS: Growing Up in the Digital Age, a documentary about the biggest parenting issue of our time.

Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that happening with her own kids and began a quest to uncover how it might impact their development. As with her other two award-winning documentaries on mental health, Ruston takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids? development and also offers solutions on how adults can empower their kids to best navigate the digital world to find balance.

SCREENAGERS addresses the most pervasive parenting issue of our time head on? depicting teen struggles over social media, video games and internet addiction. The film empowers kids to best navigate the digital world and provides practical resources to help them do it.
