!When I found meth, that was it. It made

my depression completely go away.

Suddenly everything made sense—it felt

like a miracle drug. But then I started to

get high just to erase the reality of my life.

One day, I met a friend who had been to

Huss, and she had this light in her eyes—

it was so bright. I wanted to feel like that.

At the time, I had to get high just to be

able to make it there to start the program.

People Incorporated helped me get out of

myself and talk about my depression.

They didn’t judge me, and they gave me

the freedom and the tools I needed. They

weren’t drill sergeants, drilling everything

down your throat. They gave me choices

and they gave me knowledge. I now have

the conidence, ability, and strength to

move forward with my life. It’s so cool

being able to enjoy life again!

Solving an age-old problem

means moving beyond

the same-old answers. Many

people with chemical addiction

have an underlying mental illness,

which means detox alone isn’t

enough. That’s why we created

the pioneering Huss Center for

Recovery, which offers integrated

treatment for both conditions in

one program. Instead of focusing

solely on abstinence, we work

alongside our clients to help them

understand their mental illness

and addictions, learn how to

handle symptoms, and develop

the tools and know-how they

need to pursue their life goals.

Working closely with each person,

giving them options and choices

in how they move forward, is

what makes us different—and

what leads to big success.

!Ava was getting counseling for her

anxiety, but it wasn’t enough, and the

issues spilled over into her time at

school. Ava joined the day treatment

program every afternoon for six months.

The program’s really different in that it

combines group work, counseling, and

family support. Staff saw what Ava’s

issues were during group sessions,

helped her break down the situation in

ways she could understand, and taught

her practical skills like lexible thinking,

reading body language, and identifying

anxiety triggers. They also worked with

us as a family and coached us on how

to help her at home. The staff are so

experienced and positive, and Ava related

to them so well. Even months later, we see

Ava apply the skills she’s learned—she

now has a compass for how to deal with

social situations. It’s made a tremendous

difference to Ava’s conidence and to our

family life.

It’s easier to deal with big

problems when they’re small.

And when it comes to mental

health, it’s proven that early

intervention will help children

avoid the often devastating

outcomes of mental illness and

related issues in adulthood.

Our children’s and family

programs help kids learn how

to handle their symptoms and

emotions in a practical way, and

help them lead more positive,

healthy lives at home and at

school. Expanding these early-

intervention services is key to

our mission of helping people

maintain their mental health and

independence—a goal that’s key

to the health and success of our

entire community, too!

!One night God just lipped the switch and

I quit drinking—just like that, cold turkey,

after 35 years. I lost my room at the wet

house because of it, so I started living

under a bridge at Penn and I-394. I lived

out there for ive years. I got beat up,

raccoons stole my food, and last winter

I got so cold I couldn’t feel my feet or

legs from the knees down. But People

Incorporated found me, got me in to see

a doctor, and gave me some basic stuff

like toiletries, a can opener, and batteries

for my radio. Eventually I moved into

their Safe Haven house, and now I’m in

my own apartment. I see my case manager

once a week—she helps me igure out

daily-living things, like how to get a

telephone and how to ride the bus.

I wouldn’t have survived last winter living

outside. People Incorporated saved my

life. But they’ve also given me back my

dignity and self-respect. I have the hope

of living again.

The cookie-cutter approach just

doesn’t cut it when it comes

to mental illness. One person

might need intensive medical

care, while another might need

help building social conidence.

Every path is different. That’s why

our homeless programs help

people with mental illness at

their own pace—starting with

basic survival gear, then stable

housing and medical care, and

individualized help in managing

daily living and moving towards

independence and wellness.

It’s about choosing hope, rather

than doing nothing and picking

up the pieces later—and it’s

more cost-effective for our

community, too.

Tragedies like those in Newtown,

Tucson, Aurora, and even here in

the Twin Cities have turned the

spotlight on the problem of

untreated mental illness in our

communities. And while those

events were horriic, mental

illness is an insidious disease that

creeps into nearly every facet of our

lives—most of it witnessed silently,

unreported in any public way.

Mental illness usually doesn’t

make the news, but we pay a heavy

price for ignoring the problem. It’s

one of the biggest causes of work-

place absenteeism. More than half

of those who are homeless have

some form of mental illness. And

many who drink or use drugs do

so to get relief from the pain of

their symptoms. Untreated mental

illness contributes to the spiraling

costs we all pay for emergency-

room care, police time, court time,

and prisons. Above all, it leads to

countless broken lives.

What’s dificult to accept about

these tragedies is that they are

largely preventable.

People Incorporated has

solutions available. Right here.

Right now. We’ve proven time and

time again over the past 40 years

that community-based services

are the most cost-effective way to

help those with mental illness, and

enable them to live independently

in the community— going to

school, going to work, looking

after their children, volunteering,

and everything else they do to

contribute to our world.

What’s missing is the communal

will to put mental health fund-

ing where it is most effective—to

adequately fund community-based

mental health services. The choice

is clear. We can continue to pay the

incredible costs of hospital and

emergency-room care, or we can

provide that little bit of support

that keeps people well and moving

forward with their lives.

Our late board

president, John

Osborn, understood

how People

Incorporated illed

this critical gap in our

community. John was

a deeply caring man

who served several

nonproits and his

church in various leadership roles,

and we will miss his contributions

tremendously. As an accountant,

John naturally took an interest in

making sure People Incorporated

was a good steward of its funds.

But we know part of what appealed

to him about People Incorporated’s

approach was our ability to deliver

the best possible outcomes for

people, while providing better iscal

outcomes for our community, too.

That’s where you come in. We need

you to join us in advocating for real

solutions that work. Write to your

representatives and

public oficials. Talk to

your neighbors. Tell

our clients’ stories.

Pass this report on to

someone else. Recruit

your friends. Donate

and volunteer.

We’ve accomplished

so much together already, but we

know we can do so much more if

we can get the word out that our

programs not only save money,

but literally save the lives of people

who really need our help. Now,

more than ever, we need YOU to be

a voice for people like Marlin, Maia,

Kristin, Ava, and Kenny—and the

many thousands of people who

need help right now, today.

Thank you for everything that you

do to uphold our mission and carry

it forward.

whole-person approach

Our programs provide not only more individualized care, but also signiicant

savings for our community health-care budgets. Without our services, our

clients would be forced to rely on emergency rooms and hospitals to address

their mental health needs.

people incorporated crisis programs save $19 million each year!

Our crisis programs provide home-

like places where people in crisis

can stabilize their mental health.

These proven programs serve more

than 1,500 people each year, saving

our community approximately

$19 million compared to the costs

of treating them in hospitals and

emergency rooms.

people incorporated’s approach to mental health care

Mental illness is complex and can affect all aspects of a person’s life—from

physical health to housing to social relationships. Mental health care is

what we do, but we look at each person as an individual and provide just

the right combination of support he or she needs to succeed.

cost comparison (in millions)

Family tragedies sparked a deep depression for me, and I became nervous

around people and claustrophobic. I was so desperate. My People Incorporated

case manager showed me she cared, and I began to care, too. First she helped

me focus on getting healthy, then helped me create strategies for going out in

public. What’s different about People Incorporated is that I’m part of the process.

My case worker is like a mentor. She doesn’t hound or judge me. She helps

me focus on where I want to go, like inishing my associate’s degree. Having

someone I can call, who will help me stay healthy, makes such a difference.

everything from stufing envelopes to serving on committees to hanging 200

pieces of art on the wall. Together, our volunteers contributed nearly 6,200 hours

of time, talent, and energy this year to help further our mission. Our grateful

thanks to all of you for your contributions!
