Essential Question Are distance and time important when describing motion?

Describing Motion ● Motion: occurs when an object changes position relative to a reference

point ● Distance v. Displacement

○ Distance- how far an object has traveled ○ Displacement- distance and direction of an object change in position from starting point

● Speed- the distance an object travels per unit time rate of change on position

● Average (avg) speed (v) = total distance (d)/ total time (t) ○ v=d/t

Types of SpeedType of Speed Description Example

Instantaneous speed of any given point in time

driving a car and looking down at the speedometer

Average total distance traveled divided by total time

taking a road trip

Constant speed that does not vary putting a car in cruise control

Let’s Try a Problem If you take a walk for 1.5 hours and travel 7.5 km, what is your average speed?

Page 20: Measuring Motion - middleschoolwithcasanova.weebly.commiddleschoolwithcasanova.weebly.com/.../7/7/37774913/measuring_motion.pdfMeasuring Motion Day 2 . Objectives I will identify the

Graphing Motion ● Motion of an object can be plotted on a distance - time graph

○ x axis- time ○ y axis- distance

● The slope of a line on a distance - time graph gives the speed of an object in motion

Essential Question What is the difference between positive and negative acceleration?

Page 25: Measuring Motion - middleschoolwithcasanova.weebly.commiddleschoolwithcasanova.weebly.com/.../7/7/37774913/measuring_motion.pdfMeasuring Motion Day 2 . Objectives I will identify the

Acceleration ● Velocity- includes speed of an object and the direction of its motion

○ Question: what is the difference between speed & velocity? ■ Velocity includes direction whereas speed does not.

● Acceleration- rate of change of velocity. acceleration occurs when an object changes speed, its direction, or both.

Calculating Acceleration

Note: Change in velocity = final velocity - initial velocity

acceleration formula = a=vf-vi/t

Acceleration ● Positive Acceleration

○ A plane takes off…■ Final Velocity = 80 m/s■ Initial Velocity = 0 m/s■ Time= 20 s

● Negative Acceleration ○ A bike comes to a stop

■ Final velocity = 0 m/s ■ Initial velocity = 3 m/s■ Time = 2s
