Why do we use scale?When we make a map … we shrink the real world so that it can fit on a page

We use scale to do this…

Simply put, scale is how much the person making the map has shrunk the real world

So how does it work?

You can measure the

distance with a ruler.

2cm = 1km

You can measure the distance in cm

Try to be exact!

(Each extra mm = .1)

Then … divide by 2 to change to km

4cm = 1km

Things like roads and rivers are bendy, but our ruler is straight…

How can we measure them?
