Introduction Measuring Up: New Hampshire Arts Education Data Project – October 2010

In 2008, Quadrant Arts Education Research, on behalf of the New Hampshire State Department of Education and the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts, began a study of the level of arts education in New Hampshire public schools. The principals of all 484 public schools, including charter schools, were asked to complete an on-line survey to provide detailed information on arts education in his or her school. The on-line survey captured numerous details on arts education, more specifically:

• Types of arts courses (curricular and extra-curricular) offered, by grade level (for music, visual arts, media arts, theater, and dance);

• Number of students enrolled in arts courses;

• Number of hours in a year dedicated to arts education, by arts discipline;

• Certification level of teachers providing arts education;

• Non-salary budgets allocated to arts education;

• Use of visiting artists, field trips, and artists-in-residence;

• Professional development offerings to art and general classroom teachers;

• Policies in place regarding arts education (adoption of standards, high school arts graduation requirements, etc.).

A total of 153 schools completed a questionnaire, which is a 32% response rate. A total of 84,840 students were represented by responding schools.

*School types are not mutually exclusive; a single building could be designated as being an elementary school, a middle school, and/or a high school, depending on which grades they have enrollment in. Schools with ‘elementary grade’ are those with at least one grade from kindergarten through fifth grade. Middle school grades are grades six, seven and eight. High school grades are grades nine through twelve.

Percent of Schools With “No Budget” vs. “At Least 10% of Budget” Allocated To Each Arts Area

(Base=schools with at least some arts course and a non-zero budget)

Median = 2%* Median = 42%* Median = 4%*

Median = 47%*

Median = 13%

*Of schools with a non-zero budget.

Shown here are the percentage of schools with for each arts discipline where either ‘none’ of the arts curriculum support budget is allocated to that discipline (orange bars) or at least 10% of the budget is allocated to that discipline. For example, for 96% of schools where dance is offered, none of the budget is allocated to dance. Looked at another way, only 1% of those schools have at least 10% of the arts curriculum support budget allocated to dance. On average, only 2% of schools’ budget is allocated to dance.
