Before the time of formal groceriesin this area, it would be onlyspeculation as to where and howgroceries and staples were distributedto the people here. They no doubtraised most of the food needed tosustain them. Maybe a huckster

wagon went fromplace to place as a

I convenience to thosewho had no means toeasily get to onecentral location fortheir needs.

streets. One of the groceries most familiar

to the community was in the Wiggsand Rusk building, no longer there. The other is the brick building at 9234White street, at the corner of Whiteand Division streets, which has been a

The building in the left foreground began as the C.E. Cambell hardware store-1907. Writing on thebuilding advertises hardware, stoves, buggies, wagons, harness, windmills and farm implements. grocery for many years.Prior to the time that the current

grocery and adjacent building werebuilt, a fine dwelling house which wasnearly a block long once stood on thesame lot. The house was owned byAnthony Maiden, and was tom downabout 1900. We can assume that thepresent store was built a short timeafter that by Ed Cambell who ran ahardware store there first. The photooffered shows very clearly the wordsC.E. Cambell on the upper front of thebuilding. The photo was on the frontof a post card sent in 1907, soCambell was in business at least thatlong.

The faint letters visible on a 1992photo attest to the fact that OscarMcKinney once owned this buildingand ran his store there. As seen by hisad, he sold a large variety of goods.

One article states that Ben Loveless

also ran a hardware store in the samebuilding some time after that of Mr.Cambell.

The building had an elevator, a large.platform with cables to move stock tothe upper floor, John Marks reports itbeing there when he bought thebuilding. The story goes that OscarMcKinney hoisted his buggies up tothe second floor for storage and thatthe coffin factory across the streetalso used it for the same purpose tostore extra coffins.

At one time Charlie Loveless andLen Loveless conducted a grocerywhere the pool room was, betweenthe two bank buildings on WhiteStreet. Len also ran a grocery in thebuilding next to the current grocery at9232 White street.

The entire lot on which the brickgarage, the grocery and adjacentbuilding are now located, was owiled

by Edward and William Bassett from1892 until 1901. Fred Baker attainedthe lots in March of 1927. Baker ran agrocery in the building on the cornerat 9234 White street, where JohnMarks had his grocery. Mrs. FredBaker said that the Bakers came totown in 1915 and that they were in thegrocery business here until about1935. OIVille Gochenour bought thegrocery building in 1936, however hedid not run the grocery, Forest Mooreand Claude Loveless conducted thebusiness for him while he ran the cardealership in the garage.

John Marks had run a hucksterwagon for Earl Anderson out ofColfax for four and one half yearsbefore coming to Clarks Hill andpurchasing the building fromGochenour. In 1939 he began hisgrocery business. He hired his brother

270

Paul right out of high school to runthe huckster wagon taking groceriesto the country from the grocery.

Paul ran the huckster wagon until hewent to World War II, at which timeJohn hired John Lawhead and BillWebb during that time in his stead.

Paul has told us that there were twoice boxes on the bus, and a chickencoop tied onto the back. The wagonwas an old 1935 Ford school busbought from Lloyd Leamon thesummer of 1940 for $150.00. Theyraised the roof of the bus one foot toaccommodate the shelves inside.

Lunch meat, usually bologna, wasavailable by prior request only. Theycarried a full stock of groceries andstaples, along with milk, butter, oleoand pop. Most popular with the kidswas the candy Paul always took withhim. When they saw the bus they

John was a grocer and a friend tothe community for many years.Hesold the store in 1973.

Paul had two routes whichwere run twice a week. Onthe fifth day he took thebus to Indianapolis to pickup stock for the store at aco-op that the independent

the store with John as thiswas a veIY busy time. Thehuckster wagon had to beabandoned during the war

Baker, as statedbefore came here in1915. It is notknown if he ran theMcNutt store byhimself for a timeafter McNutt left ornot. By 1927 heowned the presentgrocery building at
