Noise emission. Notes concerning noise emission: Given that there exists a relationship between noise level and exposure times, it is not precise enough to determine the need for supplementary precautions. The factors affecting the true level of exposure to operators are clearly the amount of time exposed, the characteristics of the working environment, other sources of dust and noise, etc, for example, adjacent machines, in other words, the level of ambient noise. It is possible that exposure level limits will vary from country to country. Specification sheet. G

Receiving your machine. Note: It is probable that your machine will be delivered by a third party. Before you unpack your new machine, you will need to first inspect the packing, invoice and shipping documents supplied by the driver. Ensure that there is no visible damage to the packing or the machine. You need to do this prior to the driver leaving. All damage must be noted on the delivery documents and signed by you and the delivery driver. You must then contact the seller (Laguna Tools) within 24 hours. Note. It is probable that you will find sawdust within your machine.

This is because the machine has been tested prior to shipment from the factory and/or Laguna Tools. Laguna Tools endeavors to test machines prior to shipping to customers, as movement can take place during transportation. It must be noted that additional machine movement can take place between Laguna Tools and the end user, and some adjustments may have to be undertaken by the customer. These adjustments are covered in the various sections of this manual. Introduction to edgebanders.

This edgebander is designed to give you years of safe service. Read this owner’s manual in its entirety before assembly or use. The Laguna Hand Bandit is a portable gluepot edgebander, which is ideal for on-site repairs, specialty and custom edgebanding. The Hand Bandit is designed to perform curved and straight edgebanding quickly and easily and is capable of applying ABS, PVC, melamine and wood veneer. The machine features quick heat up. The quiet operation makes it practical to use on jobsites as well as in the shop. The included stand and support table allow for bench top use as well as handheld operation. The machine is supplied in an all-metal

lockable carrying case with wheels, vacuum clamp stands (optional), manual end trimmer, manual top and bottom trimmer and foldable support stand with table.

The tape thickness selector is adjustable to suit tape thickness between 0.7 mm and 2 mm. 3. Control handle. The control handle has the tape feed start/stop switch located on the top. 4. Support table. The support table is used when the edgebander is used assembled to the stand to support the panel being edge banded. 5. Panel support table. The support table (shown in the transport position) is adjustable to suit the different thickness of panel. 6. Glue thickness adjustment. The machine uses unglued tape, and heated glue is applied to the panel by the glue roller that is part of the glue pot assembly. The tape is then guided and pressed onto the edge of the panel by the operator pressing the panel against the pressure rollers. The glue thickness adjustment knob adjusts the amount of glue that is applied to the panel edge.

Assembly and setup.

Panel support table

Release the clamp handle and remove the panel support table. Assemble from the bottom of the casting as shown. Note. The shaft is graduated to allow you to set the table to the

thickness of the panel being edged.

13

Support table

Clamping screws

Pull the legs to the vertical position and lock in position with the clamping screws. If the clamping screws are not used, there is a possibility that the legs could fold down during use. The table legs have holes in the feet. It is suggested that they are used to screw the table to a bench or similar surface. You will be applying pressure to the edgebander during use, and there is a strong possibility that the edgebander will move during operation if the table is not secured.

Stand Screws

Raising washers & fixing

screws

Attach the support table to the stand with the four screws as shown above.

Page 14: MEB4100-0060%3ALaguna+Hand+Bandit+edge+bande

14

Note. The support table is set so that the tape is applied level with the bottom of the panel. If you require the tape to protrude lower on the panel, washers (not supplied) should be assembled between the stand and the table. Ensure that the thickness of the washers is the same for all the fixing points or the table will not be square to the edgebander pressure roller, and the tape will not be applied correctly to the panel.

Edgebander to stand fixing

Secure the edgebander to the stand with the three fixing screws as shown.

Electrical cable

The electrical cable supplied fitted to the hand bandit may not be fitted with a plug, as the plug type will depend on your supply. Ensure that your supply corresponds with that required by the machine 110v single phase.

15

Cleaning the machine. Remove the rust protection grease with WD 40 or a similar solvent It is important that you remove all the grease and re-lubricate with a Teflon-based lubricant. Teflon has less tendency to attract sawdust and cause clogging. Operating and adjusting the machine. Starting the hand bandit. Even if you will be using the hand bandit as a hand machine, it is suggested that the hand bandit is assembled to the stand initially to conduct adjustments and become familiar with the machine.

1. The temperature controller controls the temperature of the glue and will not allow the machine to operate until the glue reaches the correct operational temperature. The operational temperature is factory set at 170 degrees C. 2. The speed controller adjusts the speed of the tape feed and glue

rollers. It is suggested that you start to use the machine on the slowest speed until you gain the necessary skill in applying tape to panels. 3. Main on/off switch. 4. Power indicator light. This light is illuminated when the on/off

switch is in the on position and power is supplied to the machine. 5. Plug the machine into the electrical supply and switch on.

Page 16: MEB4100-0060%3ALaguna+Hand+Bandit+edge+bande

16

Glue & drive roller start/stop switch

6. Once the glue has reached the correct temperature, switch the control switch on. The rollers will rotate.

Tape thickness selection knob

7. Adjust the tape thickness selection knob to the thickness of the tape that is to be used.

Tape feed

8. Cut a length of tape approximately 12 inches long and feed the tape through the two white plastic rollers and under the height bar. Adjust the height bar so that the tape moves freely but there is not excessive clearance. It is suggested that the bar is adjusted to allow 1/64-inch clearance.

Page 17: MEB4100-0060%3ALaguna+Hand+Bandit+edge+bande

17

Feed roller

9. Push the tape so that it is in contact with the two rollers. 10. Start the hand bandit by pressing the start/stop switch. This will

feed the tape through the machine and apply glue to the tape. You will not be applying the tape to the panel, as this operation is to check and adjust the amount of glue that is applied to the tape.

Glue applied to tape

11. The glue should be applied evenly across the tape and in

sufficient quantity to allow the tape to adhere to the panel edge.

Page 18: MEB4100-0060%3ALaguna+Hand+Bandit+edge+bande

18

Glue adjustment knob

12. It is probable that the amount of glue applied is either too much or too little. Adjust the glue adjustment knob counter-clockwise to apply more glue and clockwise to reduce the amount of glue. The temptation is to apply excessive glue to the tape, but excessive glue will result in a panel with glue on the top and bottom faces. Adjust the amount of glue and run new tape through the machine. Continue until the glue is applied evenly and of the correct thickness. If the panel is very porous, thick, non-porous, etc., you will have to adjust the amount of glue that is on the roller. Note: For dense panels you will need less glue, and for porous panels you will need more glue. If insufficient glue is applied to the panel edge, the tape may not adhere correctly, and if too much glue is applied, it will squeeze out top and bottom. It is far better to take the time to adjust for the job at hand and apply the correct amount of glue rather than spend extra time cleaning or replacing unglued tape.

Panel Tape

13. Cut a length of tape to suit a practice panel. As you become

proficient in the use of the machine, you will only need to cut the tape just longer than the panel, but initially allow at least 3 inches at either end of the panel.

Page 19: MEB4100-0060%3ALaguna+Hand+Bandit+edge+bande

19

Panel support table

14. Adjust the panel support table to suit the thickness of the practice panel. There are graduations on the shaft, but when the hand bandit is fitted to the stand, it is easier to simply lay the panel on the stand, move the panel support table down and clamp in position. 15. Feed the tape into the drive rollers as detailed earlier. 16. Place the practice panel on the stand and press the start/stop switch.

Pressure roller

17. Wait until the tape has passed the pressure roller and press the

panel onto the tape. Feed the panel along, ensuring the tape is taut and that no slack is allowed between the pressure roller and the glue roller. If slack is allowed, the tape will wander up and down the panel edge. If the panel is pulled too hard, the tape could stretch, so practice is required to achieve a good glue joint. It will not take long before you get the skill in feeding the panel.

Page 20: MEB4100-0060%3ALaguna+Hand+Bandit+edge+bande

20

End trimmer

Edge trimmer

18. To trim the tape level with the panel tape, trimmers are provided shown above. Laguna also offers an optional router with radius cutter.

Optional vacuum supports

Panel supported on vacuum supports

19. Once you have mastered the skills required to apply the tape, it is

time to use the hand bandit–free hand. Laguna Tools offers optional vacuum supports to hold the panel as shown above. The supports rely on vacuum and require a smooth surface such as melamine to hold securely. When using the supports or another method of holding the job, a few points must be checked prior to starting the tape application. A. Ensure that the supports allow sufficient clearance both vertically and laterally as the hand bandit hangs below the panel. Conduct a test run prior to applying the tape and make sure that the movement of the hand bandit is not impeded. B. Ensure that the panel is held securely. Tape cannot be successfully applied to a panel if sufficient pressure can not be applied.

Page 21: MEB4100-0060%3ALaguna+Hand+Bandit+edge+bande

21

Panel support table

20. Adjust the panel support table to suit the thickness of the panel. 21. Cut tape to the length required, allowing for extra at the ends. 22. Hold the hand bandit away from the panel and start the glue and pressure rollers. As the tape passes the pressure roller, press the panel onto the tape, ensuring that the tape is kept taught and that even pressure is applied during the tape application. 23. To apply tape around the complete outside of a panel in one pass (round panels, etc.), the tape has to be cut accurately. This will take longer to master, as the tape may stretch. Practice is the key, and trials should be conducted until the skill is mastered prior to starting

production. Tape selection. The height of the tape that you select for your panels will depend on availability from your supplier. Suppliers carry tapes for most common thicknesses of panel. Always allow for overhang on both the top side and the bottom side of the panel, as no machine will apply the tape perfectly and a small amount will always have to be cut off the finished panel.

Page 22: MEB4100-0060%3ALaguna+Hand+Bandit+edge+bande

22

Topping up the glue pot.

Glue pot lid

As the glue is used, additional glue can be added by loosening the clamp screw, removing the lid and pouring in additional glue granules. The lid must be kept on the glue pot at all times to stop the ingress of dirt, sawdust, etc. Any dirt, etc., that is in the glue will affect the final glue bond and could damage the glue pot mechanism. Before you start to process panels, read the following. It is simple to get good results from your machine (after practice), but it is necessary for you to ensure that the following points are always adhered to: 1. Panel quality. The panel must be of good quality with sufficient density. The panel edge MUST be at 90 degrees. If the panel edge is not at

exactly 90 degrees, the pressure rollers will not be able to press the tape onto the edge of the panel and a poor joint will result. The panel edge must not have a ledge from the scoring blade. If the scoring blade on your panel saw is set so that it cuts a ledge, the tape will not stick to the under-cut ledge, and the tape will be loose in this area. The panel edge must be clean and free from dust, dirt, oil, humidity or other contaminanants. If the edge has been contaminated, the glue on the edge banding will not stick and a poor joint will result. The edges must be chip-free. The edge banding cannot fix a chipped panel, and you will be wasting time and money.

Page 23: MEB4100-0060%3ALaguna+Hand+Bandit+edge+bande

23

2. Edgebanding tape. Always use a good quality tape from a reputable supplier. The better the tape, the better the finished panel and the less time spent on the job. Always store the rolls of tape flat in a cool, dry environment. If the tape is not stored flat, the roll may become distorted and may have to be scrapped. Check the manufacturer’s date on the roll. Always use the first-in first-out principle when using your tape stock. 3. Glue. A simple test is to apply the tape to a test panel, and after about one minute, using pliers, pull the tape off. The tape should be adhered to the panel evenly along its length and evenly across its width. The tape should have particles of the panel stuck to it over the complete length and width. Maintenance and troubleshooting.

Always disconnect the electrical supply supply before conducting any maintenance. Lubrication.

It is recommended that you use a Teflon-based lubrication on your machine, as it tends to dry and will reduce the amount of sawdust buildup on the machine. Teflon lubricants are available from most leading hardware stores.

Check the list below to remedy the fault before contacting your supplier’s technical department for advice. Note: The most common cause of faults with edgebanding machines is dirt or small pieces of edgebanding jamming the mechanism. If you keep your machine clean and conduct regular preventive maintenance, your machine should give you many years of trouble-free service. Always disconnect the electrical supply before conducting any adjustments or maintenance.
