Let me first take a moment to say “thanks” to the thousands of Mecum customers who participated in the last two Mecum Special Events, which together generated a stellar $11 Million in sales. Boating and Chevrolet enthusiasts alike came from far and wide to Minnesota and Ohio to make both the McDorman and Warner Collection events truly amazing sales. The continual growth of our Kissimmee, Florida auction over the past five years has been nothing short of phenomenal. Mecum is now prepared to accept 1,750 vehicles over 5 big days January 26-30, making it the largest January auction in the country for 2011. Take a look at the early No Reserve offerings on page 11, and just a sampling of the Star Cars on pages 12-13. With over 800 cars already consigned by the end of October, here we go again! Remember, this year’s event has been expanded to five days, with live television broadcasting on Discovery’s HD Theater Wednesday the 26th through Saturday the 29th. Truly… all the magic will take place East of the Mississippi this January! I look forward to seeing you all in Kansas City, and most certainly in warm, sunny Florida…Where the Cars Are.

“As we continue to grow our presence in the boating industry, we are learning that this hobby, much like that of the classic car market, is supported by a tight-knit community of enthusiasts. The Warner Collection auction was the most important event to date for the advancement of antique and collectible boats in the history of the
hobby. It is a strong indicator of the enthusiasm for boat auctions and we are excited about the prospects of this emerging market.” – Dana Mecum M
It was a significant weekend in the antique boat hobby universe as Mecum Auctions drew out the who’s who among classic boat collectors for the Warner Collection Auction event, where 126 vintage boats sold for nearly $4 million (excluding buyers’ premiums). The Warner Collection was started by lifelong collector F. Todd Warner, owner of Mahogany Bay, one of the world’s leading authorities on vintage watercraft. The collection includes wooden boats built from 1903 to 1996. From major boat collectors and dealers to restorers and new hobbyists, bidders came from across the country as well as from overseas to attend the October 16, 2010 auction in Winsted, Minnesota. Curt Erikson, a 30-year wooden boat collector from Seattle, shared in the excitement: “This is the most exciting thing the hobby has seen in 20 years,” he said. The event’s high sale was a 1929 Dingle 30’ Runabout known as the Gerry Lo, a one-of-a-kind triple cockpit runabout that sold for $285,000.

“It was a fantastic auction and I was very pleased,” McDorman stated. “At one point there were more than 1,100 people watching it online via Mecum’s live auction webcast. Mecum did a beautiful job setting everything up and handling the event – it all went so smoothly. It was very professional and the cars and memorabilia brought what I expected.” M

Car enthusiasts and lifelong collectors packed the Mecum Auction tent at Bob McDorman Chevrolet in Canal Winchester, Ohio, as McDorman’s personal collection of Corvettes, as well as an array of other Chevrolet models, sold to eager bidders. The no-reserve Mecum event, which took place Nov. 6, 2010, had total gross sales of $7 million (excluding buyer’s premium). It included nearly 150 superior classic cars, comprising the most complete collection of Corvettes ever offered. “As a passionate car lover, there is no doubt Bob McDorman’s collection featured some of the rarest, most desired vehicles in the classic car community,” said President Dana Mecum. “We had more than 1,000 registered bidders for this one-day auction, which is an extraordinary turnout, and we were proud to work together with Bob to make this a very successful event.” McDorman, a Chevrolet dealer for 45 years, plans to use proceeds from the sale to focus on the daily operation of his dealership.

you an Automatic Express Check-in hang tag to be displayed from your car’s rearview mirror. To reward your advanced preparation, we will prioritize your car above others at vehicle check-in and your only remaining obligation will be to represent your car when it crosses the auction block. No worrying that you may have forgotten any paperwork and no waiting in line at the auction office to present your title. Automatic Express Check-in allows you the freedom to arrive on the day your car will be auctioned with the peace of mind that your car has been on display since the preview day. So whether you plan to professionally transport your car and fly to the auction or just want to drop off your cars at the auction and check into your hotel, Automatic Express Check-in will help you make the most out of your weekend at a Mecum Auction. M
Hundreds of registered bidders arrive at Mecum events early to inspect cars before each auction. Over the years we have observed that vehicles which are onsite for preview days receive extra exposure and have a greater chance of selling as potential buyers feel more comfortable purchasing a car when ample time has been provided for inspection. An easy and efficient way for consigners to take full advantage of preview days entails arranging for their car to arrive on site early and participating in “Automatic Express Check-in.” This high priority check-in process allows your car to be checked in almost immediately upon arrival and brought into the auction facility without delay. To qualify for Automatic Express Check-in, simply include the actual title to your vehicle with your consignment packet when you mail back your listing agreement to Mecum. Then we send
MEET THE MECUM TEAM
ANDY BIHLMAIER visited our office about six years ago to help Dan Mecum build a website and stuck around for a few extra minutes to assist with a software problem on an office computer. The next day, Andy was offered a full time IT position. At each auction site, Andy manages the setup and installation of our computer network. Andy’s IT network supports the auction office, bidder registration, and our live webcast, which he monitors during the sale. Looking forward to the new technology Mecum will implement for 2011, Andy says, “We are constantly upgrading to improved and more efficient technology to help streamline information to our buyers and sellers.” M
JESSE KOPP joined the Mecum team as a bidder’s assistant just over five years ago through a referral by veteran auctioneers Mark Delzell and Jimmy Landis. Jesse knew he wanted to work in the auction business at a young age, but never imagined a career path in the car business. During the week, Jesse is an auctioneer at the Manheim, PA wholesale car auction, but count on Jesse at every Mecum event. The energy and excitement at Mecum events sparks Jesse, who mentioned, “The growth of our auction house is amazing! Every year we are adding more days to our auctions and new venues to the auction schedule.” M
ROCKY HODGES came on board a little over two years ago and almost immediately evolved into Mecum Auction’s Road Manager. If you see it at an auction, chances are Rocky was a part of it. From setting up the auction block days before the first bidder arrives, to ensuring all cars cross the auction block, count on the Rock to make it happen. “Traveling with the auction house reminds me of the 20 years I spent traveling the country as a professional race car driver,” Rocky says. And when asked about the direction Mecum Auctions is heading, he replies‚ “I look forward to seeing where Dana is going to take us next; I’m always up for a new challenge.” M
