Mr William Joseph NEEDHAM For service to the community of the Goulburn region, particularly through the education and preservation of military history. In 1992 Mr Needham conceived the idea of a Remembrance Museum on the grounds of Mulwaree High School. He raised the funds leading to the construction of a separate building for the Museum. The project has now developed to include a Remembrance Corridor, an ANZAC Club and a sister city relationship with a school in France. The Remembrance Museum was initially established as a history and language resource for the School students and for the community of Goulburn; it now houses over 5,000 exhibits, some donated and some salvaged, commemorating the military service of the men and women of the Goulburn region. To create the Remembrance Corridor, Mr Needham planted a corridor of trees on the grounds of the School. Each tree and accompanying plaque commemorates the service of a local person who gave his/her life in a military conflict. The corridor has become a focus of commemorative activities on ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day and has become a place of personal reflection for the families of the fallen. Mr Needham established the ANZAC Club concept to promote awareness, understanding and interest in Australian military history for schoolchildren. The first Club was at Mulwaree High School but a number of other schools have now adopted the program. Mr Needham established a relationship with Marquion College in France located near the World War One battlefield of Fromelles. The relationship involves communication between the students and the exchange of educational material; future student exchanges are a possibility.
