“Medellin is the perfect city for what the IOC is looking for. These Games have an educational component that will train youth to become future leaders and good citizens. This is precisely the way Medellin is being recognised internationally, for

being an educational and cultural city where the effort of city leaders and gover-ning authorities are highly committed and focused on children and youth.”

Baltazar Medina, President, Colombian National Olympic Committee

You can count on the total and absolute support from the national government and myself personally, as we continue to push towards our ultimate goal of being se-lected as the Host City in July. Medellin is a wonderful city and it has all the attributes necessary to host these Games. All of Colombia is united in support of this effort.

Juan Manuel Santos, Colombian president

“This is a great recognition for Medellin, and it represents our sense of hope. This shows that there is a way to solve problems and we can make the most of our society. We know how to challenge ourselves and we know how move forward. We are at the peak of the sports world and this fill us with pride. We have a lot of strength and it’s the power of hope that represents our society.”

Sergio Fajardo Valderrama, Governor ofAntioquia Region

“We will create a programme to identify a potential athlete for the Youth Olym-pic Games in every neighborhood of the city. These young athletes will guide other children to follow this big opportunity. Everyone will feel that not only does Medellin want this but the city also deserves to provide this opportunity to a new generation that will transform this city.

Juan Camilo Quintero Medina, CEO, Medellin 2018

Even when we were going through difficult times, and we aspired to host the 2003 Pan-American Games, the Inter-national Olympic Committee said they supported this coun-try, they said the country was moving forward. In 2010, the IOC visited Medellin and they motivated us to keep looking. Medellin today is on the global sporting map. We have everything it takes to host an event like the Youth Olym-pic Games, and appreciate the healthy competition with the other cities.”

Andrés Botero Phillipsbourne, IOC Member and Colombia’s Minister of Sport

“Being the ambassador for this event feels like if I am prepa-ring myself to win anther gold medal. I have the same drive to win and have Medellin’s name called when the IOC an-nounces the Host City. Right now there are so many young kids here in Colombia dreaming to be in the Youth Olympic Games. While I take great pride in being a world champion, I also wish for them to fight for their dreams, to enjoy their journey, knowing they one day could be on the world stage at Medellin 2018.”

Mariana Pajón, Olympic Champion and Ambassador to Medellin 2018

Medellin perfectly fits the philosophy and the rea-son behind the creation of the Youth Olympic Ga-mes, which are different from the Summer Olympic Games in that they don’t focus as much on high marketing budgets, costs, and commercialised sport. The Youth Olympic Games represent solidarity and fraternal values, and that is why it perfectly fits what Medellin can provide and wants to keep offe-ring the rest of the world. Medellin can be a source of inspiration for many cities as an example of transforming from a time of difficulty to moving forward and improve the lives of its citizens. This bid and the YOG can continue this development. This YOG will be another vehicle to move towards higher standards of life, harmony and peace in the community. I would like to thank all the people who have been with us, supporting our dream: the athletes, the

administration, the citizens, everyone. I would like to give special thanks to President Juan Manuel Santos because he has decisively supported us in our Olympic dream. I would like to thank Andres Botero, who is absolu-tely key to this process. I recognize the important role he has played and will continue to play in the coming months. I also recognize the hard work of former Mayor Alonzo Salazar and Alicia Vargas, who kick-started this projectThis is extraordinary news. We are betting on the hope and future of our children and youth.

The region’s Integrated Transportation System consists of different types of transportation: abo-ve ground metro lines, cable car lifts to reach hill-side communities, a massive electric bus system (Metroplus), and a tramway that is under cons-truction. Altogether, the system offers an environ-mentally friendly, easy and safe transportation. In 2012, the integrated system carried

Medellin is ecstatic 8

What’s next for the bid?

“The city is prepared and the people share the joy for an Olympic dream,” says Juan Camilo Quintero, CEO of the Medellin 2018 bid. Quintero announced that people who will be present during the April 10th videoconference with the IOC are getting prepared to speak about their specific areas. This videoconferen-ce is one of the many requi-rements from the IOC to the bidding cities.

Aníbal Gaviria, Mayor of Medellin, Andres Botero, Colombian Minis-ter of Sport; Baltazar Medina, Pre-sident of the Colombian Olympic Committee, Sergio Fajardo, Go-vernor of Antioquia Region, and Juan Camilo Quintero, CEO of the Medellín 2018 bid, celebrate the city’s success after the announ-cement of the shortlist to host the 2018 Youth Olympic Games. The IOC report stated that Medellin’s programmes for the athlete ex-perience in culture and education offer “good content with inno-vative proposals.” The IOC Wor-king Group also confirmed that Medellin’s Project “presents mini-mal risk to the IOC.”

At the Atanasio Girar-dot sports complex, the main concentration of sport venues in Medellin, athletes were celebrating for additional reasons. It’s possible that some of these children from the INDER sports and recreation schools could represent Colombia in the future in and one of the many sports that will be part of the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Medellin.

2012 Gold Olympic medalist Mariana Pa-jón is proud to be the face of Medellin 2018 and represent the bid.
