Why alcohol free?Being alcohol free, Medi9 has the ability to

eliminate more germ types and so provide a greater range of protection against infection.

Norovirus, the non-enveloped virus andClostridium difficile , the spore forming

bacteria, are well known to be two of the most difficult germ types to eradicate.

Alcohol based products not only do not kill Norovirus and Clostridium difficile but inmany instances they actually exacerbate

Do Norovirus andClostridium difficile

concern me?

Between 600,000 and 1 million people in the UK catch Norovirus every year. Affecting persons

of all ages and all walks of life, Norovirus is the most common stomach bug in the UK. The virus

is very contagious and causes vomiting and diarrhoea. The virus is easily spread by contact

with an infected person, especially through their hands, by touching contaminated surfaces or

through food or drink.

Outbreaks in busy places such as hospitals, surgeries, nursing homes and schools are common because the virus can survive for

several days on surfaces or objects touched by an infected person. As there is no specific cure

for Norovirus the infection control professionals recommend allowing the virus to run its course,

ensuring that everyone practices good hand hygiene and cleans areas used by infected

persons on a regular basis.

Clostridium difficile (CDI) is a type of bacterial infection that can affect the digestive system.

Symptoms are diarrhoea, high temperatures and painful abdominal cramps.

In severe cases the result can be fatal.

Alcohol hand gel is not effective against C. difficile spores and so the use of

How it works....Bacteria, when left to colonise a surface, form what is known as a biofilm. This is made up of

millions of bacteria within the colony plus their secretions. Medi9 coats this biofilm and stops

reproduction of the colony. As the colony becomes older it becomes more susceptible to

the biocidal technology present in Medi9 and this ultimately enters the cell and destroys it.

This method of action means that Medi9 is also effective against spores. By coating the bacteria

in its spore state it stops the spore from germinating and changing from a dormant

endospore to an active vegetative cell.

Medi9 has a cumulative and residual effect, as it leaves a monomolecular layer that will work for a time after the initial application to combat the

reformulation of biofilms. In essence, this means that over time the incidences of re-infection will

reduce and surfaces will become biologically cleaner for longer.
