What are we looking for? What are we looking for?

In order to choose a good genre of music to followup with choosing our song, we had to researchinto the contrasting connotations of the differentpossible genres.

The genres we chose to briefly analyse arecontemporary and modern, as it is what we aremost familiar with; soft rock, hard rock, indie rock, pop, and R&B.

We are looking for implications of each genres thatwe feel most accustomed too, or comfortable withand would like to give our own take on through ourwork.

    Soft RockSoft Rock

Soft rock is a style of music which uses the techniquesof rock music (often combined with elements from folk

rock and singer-songwriter pop) to compose a softer,

more toned-down sound. Soft rock songs generally

tend to focus on themes like love, everyday life and

relationships. The genre tends to make heavy use of

acoustic guitars, pianos, synthesizers and sometimes

saxophones. The electric guitars in soft rock are

    normally faint and high-pitched.

    My Verdict

Personally, I fell in-love with this genre

of music. Its the genre of music that I

find it easiest to relax to and relate to.In music video terms, the lyrics are

great to create musicality within the

video, and the themes of the music

are often related to love and

relationships which gives a range of

    ideas.

    Hard RockHard RockHa

rd rock (orheavy rock) is a loosely defined genre ofrock music whichhas its earliest roots in mid-1960s

garage rock, blues rock and psychedelic rock. It is

typified by a heavy use of distorted electric guitars,

bass guitar, drums, and often accompanied with pianos,

    and keyboards.

    My Verdict

We listened to a few tracks and thought about how we could relate the music

videos to a younger target audience. The music was energizing and powerful, but

sometimes the lyrics seemed as though they would be hard to relate to in a

music video. Although we would be able to come up with a few good ideas, it felt

as though we didnt have as much room for thought as we would in other genres.

Indie rock is a sub-genre of alternative rock that originated

in the United Kingdom and t

    he United

    States in t

he 1980s.The meaning of the term "indie rock" is contested today by

many musicians, fans and commentators. Most use the

term "indie" to describe any rock music produced by artists

working within the network of independent record labels

and underground music venues that emerged in the United

States and elsewhere in 1980s and 1990s. Others see

indie rock as a distinct genre of rock music with a specific

artistic aesthetic, and care less about the context in which it

is made. Many embrace both meanings of the word,

believing that the aesthetics of the genre and its means of

    production are deeply intertwined.

My VerdictThis was an appealing genre because, much like R&B, the

artists represent not only a music genre but a style. The

lyrics contain a lot of deep and ambiguous meanings and

connotations which would be interesting for us to interpret

our impressions through our video. We definitely enjoyed

the idea of this genre of music.

    PopPop

Pop music is usually understood to be commerciallyrecorded music, often oriented towards a youth market,

usually consisting of relatively short, simple songs

utilizing technological innovations to produce new

variations on existing themes. Pop music has absorbed

influences from most other forms of popular music, but

as a genre is particularly associated with the rock and

    roll and later rock style.

    My Verdict

We definitely felt there was a lot

    of dance-oriented beats and

    rhythms, which would encourage

dancing, and many of the songsrevolved around love, which

meant we could portray it through

    our own video. Nevertheless, we

felt that it may be easy to step

over the line from innovative to

    cheesy with this genre.

R&BR&BRhythm and blues is a genre of popular African American music

that originated in the 1940s. The term was originally used by

record companies at a time when "urbane, rocking, jazz based

music with a heavy, insistent beat" was becoming more popular.

The term has subsequently had a number of shifts in meaning. Inthe early 1950s and beyond, the term rhythm and blues was

frequently applied to blues records. Starting in the 1950s, after

this style of music contributed to the development of rock and

roll, the term "R&B" became used to refer to music styles that

developed from and incorporated electric blues, as well as

gospel and soul music. By the 1970s, rhythm and blues wasused as a blanket term for soul and funk. In the 1980s, a newer

style of R&B developed, becoming known as contemporary R&B.

    My Verdict

We liked that this particular genre of musicwould encourage us to look closely at mise-en-

scene as all of the artists have very individual

styles. Additionally the music has a good beat to

dance to, however much like pop it was risky as

    it could easily become cheesy.
