What kind of media institution might distribute your media

product and why?

Production

• To produce my media product , five main stages would be involved in the production and publication process.

• The first stage would be thinking of ideas and plans for a magazine , you need to think about the audience , content and genre of the magazine as well as the way it would be presented

• Research needs to be conducted into similar products and possible opposition to the magazine, how is it similar to your magazine , what is their genre/audience/layout . What appeals about that magazine and what makes it successful?

• The next step would be to produce flat plans so that you can visualise how the magazine is going to look before you start to construct it. This helps during the production process as you already have a good visual cue

• Next the product must be constructed and edited to fit an industrial sized output• Once the produced is constructed and ready it can be produced and consumed by a large scale

or more nice audience depending on the products target audience , whether it is commercial or independent

Distribution• Research has shown that currently there are no companies

producing a magazine which covers the same genre as my magazine , the main form of publication regarding the hardcore genre is small independent fan based ‘zines’ such as “ a short fanzine about rocking’ these are independently produced in a D.I.Y environment and distributed through platform sites such as Big Cartel. These independent methods are very small scale compared to the more commercial companies such as Future plc . Future plc is a large international media group, creating over 200 specialist publications, apps, websites and events. Future plc produces a varied range of magazine both musical and non musical. Future plc produces a number of Music magazine in different Genres including classic rock (rock) metal hammer (heavy metal) as well as more specific areas such as Rhythm (Drummers) and total guitar(Guitar) it may be in a publishers interest to produce a number of different music magazines as this allows genre specific magazines to be produced which allows the published to reach out and attract a wider audience as well as keeping audiences happy with magazines that can focus solely on one genre. For this reason a company with a good reputation such as future plc who already produce a number of niche music magazines may be interested in producing my magazine due to the large gap in the market for the genre I have covered, the success of smaller ‘fanzines shows that there is demand for such a publication. Therefore without opposition a niche magazine such as my own could be of great success

Advertisement• Magazines produced by Future plc such as Metal Hammer use a number of different

methods of advertising. One way is by utilising social networks . By having pages on the two biggest social networking sites , Facebook and Twitter , this allows the magazine to reach out to potentially Billions of people . A valuable part of their advertising scheme. Another way in which Metal Hammer advertises itself is through a YouTube channel with millions of video view , Metal Hammer can post music from bands that feature in their publications on the YouTube channel to directly attract fans of the genre to their channel. These methods amongst other such as online advertising on Heavy Metal based websites are all effective ways in which to advertise.

• My magazine would be advertised in a number of different ways , like Metal Hammer , Facebook, Twitter and Youtube would all be utilised to gain awareness of my magazine , as these are free and very effective ways of getting your product out to the masses. Another way in which my magazine could be advertised is through sponsorship of venues and festivals as these are more personal and direct ways of reaching out to fans of the genre.

Distribution

• Because my magazine would be being sold to a more niche audience , it would be unlikely to be sold in supermarkets such as Tesco's or Morrison's to a more commercial audience , instead it would be sold in certain newsagents depending on demand within the area but mostly in independent music stores and within popular venues which regularly host gigs of my magazines genre. An online website would also allow though product to be purchased online. This would allow limited numbers to be sold therefore eliminating the risk of large loses within the early stages of the magazines distribution.

• The emergence of web 2.0 has allowed advertisements to reach a much wider audience , through social networking sites , pre roll ads on YouTube and other video sites , advertisements on music or clothing websites or advertisement on band websites or peoples blogs . Web 2.0 has created a plethora of new and creative opportunities in which to advertise.
