Question 3: What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Initial audience research

Our target audience were females between the ages of 15-25 from the middle/working class socio economic status. We then went on to distribute questionnaires which would help us to make sure we had the right target audience and if any changes needed to be made to our artists marketing.

From studying Maslow's Hierarchy of needs, and our artist would provide, love and belonging, self esteem, and self actualization, creativity and meaningfulness to their audience as well as being an inspiration.

Also, from looking at the Young and Rubicam theory we discovered that our target audience would fall in the ‘mainstream’ category by following fashion trends and listening to chart music. As our artist would appeal to this category of people we needed to ensure that she was

dressed in fashionable clothes and following the conventions of the pop/chart music video, however we still needed her to have an edge to her which would separate our artist from all the others.

What did we find from our audience research?

From looking at our research we found several interesting things about our target audience. We

found that most girls listened to music when they were with their

friends, or in the car/bus, we also found that the main place they watched music videos was on

music channels such as 4music, The box or MTV and finally the most popular genres of music

amongst them was Pop, RnB and Indie. From looking at the chart

opposite you can see how the popularity of each genre of music

varied amongst them. From our findings we have been able to

identify the likes and dislikes of our target audience and plan our ideas

around the findings.

We filmed all of our video in the studio so that we would be following the conventions of a pop music video, this would then appeal to our audience. We also thought that through filming in a studio on green screen we could then have a variety of different backgrounds and effects in our video which would be easy to use. However after trying for a long period of time to make our video look very effective with the green screening we realised just how difficult it was to make it look picture perfect therefore this lead to our video having some flaws in it with picture quality.

How did we set out to appeal to our target audience?

We needed to make sure that we carefully planned the music video, ancillaries and marketing of the artist effectively so that she would always appeal to the target audience. We decided on a song that was catchy and that would always stick inside the consumers head in order to make her more appealing. We then looked into other music videos and found different ideas that we could use when filming the video.

We thought about using the James Bond theme for a while and watched several music videos containing this theme, we didn’t want to make it look too much like a James Bond theme because we needed to portray the Pop genre of the video as well. We liked how one of the music videos used a lot of layering throughout the song and thought that we could also use this concept in our own video so we used the layering when we were trying to show her ‘’searching’’ for her lover. We also used the countdown at the beginning of the video to show the James Bond theme.

Audience Testing before completion?

As our entire group fell into the category that our target audience was in, we decided to criticise our own work through the editing process in order to ensure that the video targeted the audience effectively. We did a rough cut of the entire video getting rid of the bits we did and didn’t want to include and then placed them on the timeline in a rough place of where we wanted them to fit in the video.

Once we had a rough edited version on our entire music video we sat through it and then discussed which editing techniques, styles of green screen and layering we would use.

After we came to a final decision we then had to carefully place each clip in order for it to be in the right decision and in line with the lip syncing. We then watched the video again to make sure that we all felt that if we were to see this video on a music channel or over the internet that it would keep us intrigued and interested.

From creating our product this way we were all able to individually put across ideas and opinions of what we liked and didn’t like. We were also able to each put our own touch onto the video which meant it was more likely to appeal to a wider audience.

Final audience feedback

We distributed questionnaires to our Media class when we were watching all of the music videos we had created. Each student filled out the answers honestly and gave us very good feedback on our video.

Here is an example of our questionnaire that we distributed to the class, from the feedback we found that our video looked good and professional which reflected the genre very well. They said that our lip syncing was of a good standard and the main protagonist looked confident which made her fit the video well.

The only negative from the feedback we gained was that our green screening wasn’t to the best standard that it could have been which could be an improvement made if we were to re-do the video.

The feedback also said that our constant change of costume in the video made it more unique and effective.

Final audience feedback

We distributed questionnaires to get feedback on our ancillary tasks. We asked questions about how effective they are and if they liked the continuity of the colour theme throughout them. From our feedback we found that people had responded well to our ancillary tasks. The responded by saying that the use of the pink stripes was effective as it supported our brand image and they liked that the artist was confident in the photo’s because it made them look like they were done professionally as she didn’t look uncomfortable in the images.

They also said that the fact that we used layering in the images was a good link to the music video however they also said that a few improvements could include making them a bit brighter and more eye catching and make the writing a bit clearer
