Who would be the audience for your media product?

Primary Audience – As the genre of our film is Action and Crime, our primary audience for our film will be: Teenager that enjoys film and other entertainment. We decided this as a result of the actors we have chosen being teens even though they are playing the roles of adults. We think that as the characters in our movie are of a younger age, the audience will feel like they are able to relate to them because they are of a similar age. The film being an action means that it has a wide audience as lots of people, from all generations, enjoy action as a genre which helps us to have a more varied audience.

Secondary Audience – The secondary audience we have chosen is based on the genre of film, Action. From the graph here, we can see that the most common age of people who like to watch action films are middle aged males, this is why we have chosen this age range as our secondary audience. The content of our film is also in some cases quite powerful which will help to attract an older and wider audience.

What social class is our target audience?

Our main aim of social group is teenagers as we feel like they would be best suited to the type of film in which we produced due to the plot and younger actors. The age of our audience we would hope should range from 13-35, including our primary and secondary audience. The certificate we would give our movie would be a 12A just to be safe so the minimum age would have to be either 12 or 13. The majority of views based on gender we feel would come from the male sex as more males as shown by this survey seem to watch action films and television programmes. A total of 690 males view these films as opposed to a total of only 491 females which is a big reason for choosing the gender we did when planning our project.

The main target audience is male teenagers for a few reasons. The stats show that males at a younger age enjoy action based screenings, we think due to the fast pace of the chase scenes and the narrative enigma created by the mask. In the action genre category, not many movies at all have teenagers as the star and this has been the case ever since the they were being made. Look at films like James Bond, Bourne Identity, The Avengers and Transporter. A lot of this is because of the violence and scenes which these movies contain. Guns, crime and fighting is tried to be hid from the younger generation, however it seems that these youths are becoming just as involved into it that it is not possible to hide it any more. When watching films with a specific age range for the actors, only one generation can completely relate, not just in terms of knowledge but also jokes and old humour too, but by hiring young characters to star in our film, it means that youths can relate to a film that they wouldn’t normally be able to.

Prior to the production of our film, we carried out a survey to find out what our audience wanted and what audience we were actually looking at trying to aim towards. The results were quite as we expected and followed a similar pattern to the questions we had found else where. We also found out things like what the viewers find best about an action film or what props they would most like to see and like any good production company, we attempted to follow their advice and create a film based on what they would like and find interesting to watch. As shown below we had a mix of both males and females filling out our survey to help with our production and most of them agreed that a good plot was most important to keep the viewer interested and ensure that the film went well. We also went with the audience preference of mask which was very one sided towards the clown mask and we hoped that by going with what the audience wanted, we would get a better audience review.
