MEDIA FACTSHEET NParks Gardeners’ Cup About the Gardeners’ Cup The Gardeners' Cup is a collaborative and friendly gardening challenge for Singapore’s
community gardeners. It has been held in conjunction with the Singapore Garden Festival
(SGF) since 2010. Aimed at nurturing a cohesive gardening movement across Singapore,
the competition brings together various community gardening groups island-wide. These
teams have worked together for eight months to design and create gardens that showcase
their horticulture and creative talents on an international platform. The Gardeners’ Cup
continues to grow from strength to strength and is a much anticipated event among
community gardeners.
Gardeners’ Cup 2016 This year, the Gardeners’ Cup presented by Singapore Pools brings together 60 community
gardening groups under the NParks Community in Bloom (CIB) programme. These groups
were organised into teams to set up five Gardeners’ Cup displays. In line with the overall
SGF ‘Floral Wonderland’ theme, the teams have designed their gardens around the
whimsical stories of Winter Wonderland, Lyrical Play, Candy Floss, Fairies Wheel and Topsy
Turvy. More than half the participating groups this year are first-time participants and are
looking forward to showcase their talents. In addition to nurturing plants, the gardeners have
also created many props and upcycled items to embellish their garden displays.
The five teams were formed according to their Community Development Council (CDC)
district where their community gardens are located. The gardening groups participating in
Gardeners’ Cup 2016 are as follows:
Gardeners’ Cup Prize Categories Overall Champion: Gardeners’ Cup 2016 Championship Trophy
Five Special Award Titles:
Best Floral Garden Award
Best Biodiversity Garden Award
Best Innovation Award
Best Educational Garden Award
Best Eco-Friendly Garden Award

Gardeners’ Cup Garden Concepts & Descriptions South East CDC – Winter Wonderland
The Winter Wonderland concept and design was developed by community gardeners from
the South East CDC over eight months. Many of the show pieces were hand-made, and the
plants that can be found within the garden have been lovingly nurtured.
Display Highlights:
Twig and clay animal sculptures handmade by the community
Winding eco-bridge covered with hand-woven branches
Industrial bell sculpture welded together from recycled materials
Medley of silver foliage plants including the Silver Buttonwood (Conocarpus erectus),
Ash Plant (Leucophyllum frutescens), Big Blue Chalk Sticks (Senecio ficoides) and
Aglaonema 'Jade'
Winter Wonderland’s write-up
The Winter Wonderland Garden is created by gardeners of the South East District. Upon
entering the Winter Wonderland, it is easy to be caught up in the beauty and elegance of the
silver hedges interspersed with inquisitive animals peering through the patterned foliage.
The garden is a welcoming and peaceful sanctuary surrounded by a myriad of exquisite
plants. The tree of sanctuary, which is a Java Almond tree (Canarium vulgare), forms the
focal point of the garden. It towers over and envelopes the garden with its flowing tresses of
shimmering green.
To the right of the tree of sanctuary stands a structure of metal symbolising the
industrialisation and deforestation created by Man, casting its shadow over the Winter
Wonderland. The animals on the winding eco-bridge made of willow branches are fleeing
towards the tree of sanctuary. At the foot of the tree is a herb spiral, which showcases a
snapshot of the plants that people commonly rely on for food and their herbal properties.

The message of the Winter Wonderland is that it is not too late for us to treasure the last
remaining pockets of wilderness and to play our part in reducing our impact on the
environment.

North West CDC – Lyrical Play
The Lyrical Play concept and design was developed by community gardeners in the North
West CDC over eight months. Many hand sculpted show pieces and plants within the garden
have been lovingly nurtured by the community gardeners.
Display Highlights
A lyrical pathway that brings to life items mentioned in the classic “One, Two, Buckle My
Shoe” rhyme
Jumbo-sized old school games, hand-sewn and sculpted by the community
Interactive old school games for the public to try
Look out for Joey’s Palm (Johannesteijsmannia altifrons). Its leaves are simple and
undivided, and emerge directly from the underground root stock. Diamond-shaped with
serrated edges, its interesting form makes it a compatible plant to depict a chaptek
display (a traditional Asian game which requires players to keep a weighted shuttlecock,
consisting of feathers attached to a rubber or plastic sole, in the air).
Singapore’s national flower Vanda Miss Joaquim (Papilionanthe Miss Joaquim) and the
carnivorous pitcher plant (Nepenthes rafflesiana), which are named after historic figures
Agnes Joaquim (1854–1899) and Sir Stamford Raffles (1781–1826).

Lyrical Play’s write-up
The Lyrical Play Garden is created by gardeners of the North West District. Lyrical Play
merges the classic “One, Two, Buckle My Shoe” nusery rhyme with jumbo-sized old school
games to bring both children and adults through a playful and nostalgic adventure unlike
any other. A journey through the garden promises to bring to life this nursery rhyme by
encouraging visitors to look out along the pathway for items mentioned in the rhyme.
One, two, Buckle my shoe;
Three, four, Open the door;
Five, six, Pick-up sticks;
Seven, eight, Lay them straight;
Nine, ten, A big, fat hen

The Candy Floss concept and design was developed by community gardeners from the
South West CDC over eight months. Professionally-crafted sculptures and plants
representing the softness of candy floss have been nurtured within the garden.
Display Highlights
Unique representation of candy floss, with spiralling patterns made from plants to
represent cotton floss spinning in a candy floss machine, and a complementary
spiralling sculpture within the dome
Larger-than-life? ant sculptures made of tweed balls
Look out for the use of plants associated with cotton candy’s colourful, fluffy and
sweet smelling characteristics, including the Mexican Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum),
Chinese Juniper (Juniperus Chinensis) and Pink Lantern (Medinilla Magnifica)
The 11 sugar cubes represent the 11 organisations who came together from the
corporate, educational and residential sectors to create the Candy Floss garden
Candy Floss’ write-up
The Candy Floss Garden is created by gardeners of the South West District. Along the path,
visitors should look out for the sculptures of ants made of tweed balls, who are moving sugar
cubes into a dome. Inside the dome are a variety of colourful and sweet-smelling flowers,
which represent candy floss swirling around in a candy floss machine. Each sugar cubes
represents a participating group from the South West District. Look out for unique plants in
the garden such as the Mexican Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum), Chinese Juniper (Juniperus
Chinensis) and Pink Lantern (Medinilla Magnifica) which can mimic the texture of candy
floss.

chinensis) spilling out. These flat, disk-like flowers have heavily fringed petals that
are carried on slender branched stems
Fairy houses that are hand-painted with details and house fairies all around the plot
A wooden fence, which is home to flowering climbers such as the fragrant Pink
Trumpet Vine (Podranea ricasoliana), with distinct tubular flowers and Tonkin
Jasmine (Telosma cordata) that has heart-shaped leaves and clusters of downward-
hanging yellow flowers that smell of a mix of roses and violets
Fairies Wheel with coloured petunia flowers hanging from its baskets
Fairies Wheel – Write-up
The Fairies Wheel Garden is created by gardeners of the North East District. This garden

Central CDC – Topsy Turvy
The Topsy Turvy concept and design was developed by community gardeners from the
Central CDC over eight months. Visitors will be thrilled by the overflowing colours and
textures that will greet them at the garden. Show pieces such as the TV Terrarium and
Kaleidoscope were hand-made, and the plants were lovingly nurtured by the gardeners.
Display Highlights
Shipwreck on a fantasy island featuring plants from the Platycerium and Tillandsia
families growing underneath a capsized boat
Juxtaposition of gigantic and miniature forms of plants and show pieces
Visually exciting Euphobia Island, featuring coloured Tillandsia and Euphorbia species
towering over the visitors
Topsy-Turvy’s write-up
The Topsy-Turvy Garden is created by gardeners of the Central District. “Topsy-turvy” aims
to bring to life the wild imagination of a child. At the entrance of the garden, visitors are
greeted by the scene of a “Treasure Hunt” inside the TV terrarium, which spills over into the
outside world to become the monstrous gigantic flowers of the chaotic “Euphorbia Island”
draped in coloured mosses. As visitors wander deeper into the garden, they are led to the
spot marked “X”. Here, they are greeted by a capsized boat representing an overturned
reality. At the end of the journey through the garden is a treasure chest overflowing with
yellow flowered Cosmos plant species.
