  • With a television audience of more than one billion across Europe potentially set to watch the European Championships, Berlin and Glasgow has a unique opportunity to excite and thrill thanks to the media coverage.

Focussing on the European Athletics Championships, capacity crowds are expected in the Berlin Olympic Stadium and on the streets of this great city for the out-of-stadia events.

The pre-championship organisation has been outstanding, we know that Germany has some of the most enthusiastic athletics fans anywhere in the world let alone Europe, the stadium ranks as one of the best in the world and Berlin is one of the worlds great cities and a stunning backdrop to this competition.

The IAAF World Championships here in 2009 have become one of the most fondly remembered global championships of our sport for so many different reasons and this gives me a chance to say, Welcome back, Berlino! and I believe we will look back on these Championships with similar memories and emotions.

In this context, I believe that you, the media, will find plenty to report on and I hope you will find this publication useful and it facilitates your work.

We want to provide the media with every opportunity to report as extensive as pos-sible on this championship because it is through you that our sport engages with not only committed fans and stakeholders of the sport but the broader public as well.

    1. WELCOME MESSAGES

Welcome Message from EA President Svein Arne Hansen

I am very pleased to welcome all mem-bers of the media to the Berlin 2018 Eu-ropean Athletics Championships, the 24th edition of the most important continen-tal competition of our sport.

Every European Athletics Championships is special, and this one is no different.

It is among the biggest events on the sporting calendar of this year and will be a showcase for the top stars of our sport as well as being an opportunity for new names to come to the fore in international competition for the first time.

The media whether print, broadcast, photographers, online or social media will all play their part in making this European Athletics Championships a success because you will tell the stories of what happened, bring to life the performances on the track and the portray the personalities of the men and women who achieved them.

However, I believe this years Championships will provide even more material than ever before to provoke the interest of the media because, for the first time, we have joined forces with the federations of six other major sports and created the inaugural multisport European Championships with Glasgow being the co-host with Berlin.

Approximately 1500 athletes will be in action here in the German capital it is pos-sible that the record 1469 competitors in Amsterdam two years ago will be topped, which is a far cry from the 226 competitors at the first European Athletics but another 3000 competitors will be in Scotland contesting the six sports being staged there.

Briefly, I believe a new era in sport beckons with these multisport European Cham-pionships.

  • Welcome Message from the Governing Mayor of the city of Berlin, Michael Mller

A very warm welcome to the 24th Euro-pean Athletics Championships in Berlin 2018

For six days Germanys capital will be the sporting centre of the world. Around 1600 athletes from more than 50 na-tions will vie with each other in the Olym-pic Stadium to determine who is the best of the best. For months, they have been training hard and now the moment of truth has arrived. Their goal is to become Euro-pean Champion and to run that lap of honour in front of a packed stadium. We look forward to witnessing fair competitions, clean sports and experiencing many stirring moments.

Athletics fans from all around the world will furthermore take home many impres-sions from our exciting city. Berlin draws visitors with a wide variety of special sights and places. A spectacular highlight is the European Mile at the Breit scheid platz in the heart of the City West. Besides some competitions being held here, a cultural arena that can hold 3,000 spectators offers a diverse show program and a unique setting for the victory ceremonies every evening.

Berlins world-famous museums and concert halls are well worth a visit as are the trendier parts of the city with offbeat shops, bars and clubs. Join us for this very ex-citing event.

I wish all our visitors of this sporting highlight an enjoyable and unforgettable stay in our city.

Michael Mller Governing Mayor of the city of Berlin

WELCOME BACK TO THE HEART OF EUROPE

When it came to the bid for the European Athletics Championships, it was easy for the German Athletics Federation to choose Berlin as the place to stage it. The citys and its peoples dedication to sport and especially to athletics was one important argument as the fantastic atmosphere around the 2009 IAAF World Championships cannot be forgotten by anyone who attended. The annual ISTAF with its unparalleled crowds or the innovative event Berlin fliegt in front of the Brandenburg Gate, pre-senting athletics in unusual formats and attracting thousands make the city a hot-spot of athletics.

And there is the famous Olympic Stadium, of course. Modernised in the course of the preparation for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, the huge venue is constantly undergoing modernisations to remain in the small group of the leading stadiums of the world. Berlins dynamic, vitality and drive as well as the dedication of the representatives of the city, the sports enthusiasm of the inhabitants, Berlins infrastructure and the Olympic Stadium will be the ideal stage for another unforgettable European Cham-pionships of the core Olympic sport of athletics. The European Athletics Champion-ships is embedded in the overall European Championships including six other sports which are being performed in Scotlands hotspot Glasgow.

From 7 12 August, 2018, Berlin where people from more than 200 different countries found their second home is going to welcome its international guests from all over Europe: About 1,600 Athletes from the more than 50 European Athletics Member Federations, together with Officials, Coaches and Physiotherapists. Approx-imately more than another 1,500 media representatives will report from the Olympic Stadium and about three billion TV spectators in some 50 countries will watch the broadcasts from Germany.

More than 250,000 spectators are expected to come to the Olympic Stadium. Many more will support the long distance runners in the streets. Invented as a very special issue for the 2009 World Championships and copied many times after, the compe-titions in marathon and race walk will not start and finish in the stadium but in the city centre West close to the well-known Zoo Station in front of the Emperor Wilhelm Memorial Church.

Again, the marathon course will be a sightseeing tour through the old and the modern Berlin along many important sights. Hundreds of thousands of enthusiastic people will create a motivating atmosphere in the streets, which are also the setting for the world record Berlin Marathon.

Athletics where the sport can feel at home: Berlin is not only Germanys capital and with its 3.7 million inhabitants the Federal Republics biggest city. But Berlin can defi-nitely call itself one of the worlds sports centres. Research in recent years has shown that the former and new German capital ranks among the best sport cities on the globe and has proven that this metropolis in the heart of Europe is one of the best places to stage great championships.

Berlin is one of the rare places, where the support of sport is fixed in its constitution. According to this document, every citizen should be able to practise sport according to their abilities and interests. Year after year, the Berlin government invests more than 150 million euros directly or indirectly into sports. More than half a million of the Berliners are members in over 2,000 clubs of all kinds of sport from white water canoeing to mountain biking or ice hockey.

In Berlin, the use of the numerous public pitches, tracks, fields and lawns is still free of charge for the clubs. 150 teams from Berlin compete in the highest divisions of their respective sports, from American football, basketball, ice hockey and football to judo, cycling, swimming, volleyball, gymnastics and water polo.

LanguageThe official language is Standard German.

ClimateBerlin is located in a moderate climate zone. The warmest months are from July to August with average temperatures of 19.1C and 18.2C. The weather is influenced by north western and south western winds. In general, the city climate is homogeneous.

    Height above sea level34 122 m

Water qualityBerlin tap water is basically potable water and great effort is put into keeping it safe to drink. The Berlin water quality is checked permanently and both the Berlin au-thorities and the water supplier confirm that Berlins tap water is of highest quality.

During the European Athletics Championships Team Members will receive bottled water handed out to them by the LOC. All empty water bottles should be returned and collected into specific containers. All containers have the same appearance and are easily recognisable. They can be found at all official venues of the event, where bottled water is handed out to Team Members: Team Hotels, Training, Warm-up and Competition Venues as well at the Olympic Stadium as on Breit scheid platz at the European Mile. Please do your utmost to help Berlin 2018 to collect all empty bottles. Your help is much appreciated and saves the environment!

    3.4.2 USEFUL TERMS

Business hoursIf you are keen on shopping sprees late in the evening, Berlin will be your shopping paradise. The major city has the loosest business hour regulations anywhere in Ger-many. The new Shop Opening Law allows any shop in Berlin to remain open around the clock from Monday to Saturday. Almost all of the shops on the major shopping miles remain open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 20:00 and on certain days of the week even longer. Shops are permitted to open on eight Sundays a year, including some of the Sundays during Advent, from 13:00 till 20:00.

Apart from a few exceptions (at airports and railway stations), all shops are closed Sundays. A limited range of food can still be bought at petrol stations and kiosks. Berlins Sptis are legendary: these late-night shops stay open around the clock to sell drinks for partygoers as well as items of daily use.

  • 3.4.3 SIGHTS IN BERLIN

Checkpoint CharlieCheckpoint Charlie was the setting for many thrillers and spy novels, from James Bond in Octopussy to The Spy Who Came In From The Cold. Located on the corner of Friedrichstrae and Zimmerstrae, it is a reminder of the former border crossing, the Cold War and the divided Germany. The barrier and checkpoint booth, the flag and the sandbags are all based on the original site and are a popular photo subject. Check-point Charlie is one of the sights of Berlin that you should definitely see.

    Alexanderplatz

Berlin Television TowerReaching 368 metres into the sky, Berlins TV Tower is the citys most visible land-mark. The tower located on Alexanderplatz is not just a must-see sight, it is also the highest building in Europe open to the public. From the dizzying height of its viewing platform, you can enjoy spectacular 360-degree panoramic views across the entire city and beyond!

    Brandenburg Gate

    visitBerlin, Foto: Wolfgang Scholvien

Alexanderplatz in Mitte is one of the best-known public squares in Berlin and it certainly is the biggest. Named after Tsar Alexander I, who visited the Prussian capital in 1805, most people simply call it Alex. Alexanderplatz is Berlins eastern centre and an important transport junction for the S-Bahn, U-Bahn, regional trains, trams and buses. Many great tourist attractions are within walking distance, making the Alex the ideal starting point for a sightseeing tour through Berlin.

The Brandenburg Gate is one of the most iconic sights in todays vibrant Berlin. More than just Berlins only surviving historical city gate, this site symbolises Berlins Cold War division into East and West and, since the fall of the Wall, a reunified Germany. Architecturally, the sandstone Brandenburg Gate also represents one of the earliest and most attractive examples of a neo-classical building in Germany.

  • Victory Column (Siegessule)From Brandenburg Gate, the broad boulevard Strae des 17. Juni (17 June Street) leads west through the centre of Tiergarten Park. If you stroll down it for around 20 minutes, you reach a major intersection a vast roundabout known as the Groer Stern. At the heart of the roundabout, you can find the Victory Column.

East Side GalleryWith a length of 1,316 metres, the open-air art gallery on the banks of the Spree in Friedrichshain is the longest continuous section of the Berlin Wall still in existence. Immediately after the wall came down, 118 artists from 21 countries began painting the East Side Gallery, and it officially opened as an open-air gallery on 28 September 1990. Over a year later, it was granted the status of national monument.

    Reichstag

Memorial to the Murdered Jews of EuropeIn 1999, after lengthy negotiations, the German parliament decided to establish a central memorial site, the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. The New York architect Peter Eisenman won the competition to design the memorial. It was cer-emonially opened in 2005. Close to the Brandenburg Gate in the heart of Berlin you will find the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe.

KurfstendammKurfrstendamm is Berlins most famous and popular shopping boulevard and the heart of the western city centre. A successful shopping trip at the fondly called Kudamm can be guaranteed. The 3.5-kilometre-long boulevard takes you from Breit scheid platz and the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church to Rathenauplatz, where the Grunewald villas begin. Kurfrstendamm got its name from the prince-electors who rode along this street to hunt in Grunewald. Nowadays its full of Berliners and visitors who are also on the hunt, but for the latest fashion, designer items or the best bargains.

Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church (Kaiser-Wilhelm Gedchtniskirche)Kurfrstendamm is bursting with life and then a door opens, a rich, deep blue light shines. Silence all around and suddenly the hectic world is gone. As soon as you step into the Kaiser-Wilhelm Memorial Church, bustling Berlin is far, far away. The Me-morial Church is the most famous landmark in the western city centre and one of Berlins most important churches but at the same time much more than just that. It is composed of the ruins of the church that was destroyed during the war, as well as a modern church building. It is a memorial for peace and reconciliation, commemorates Berlins determination to reconstruction after the war and is a place of contemplation.

Museum Island (Museumsinsel)Berlins Museum Island is a magnificent work of art in itself, a truly outstanding en-semble of five world-renowned museums. Besides the legendary bust of the Egyp-tian queen Nefertiti, the most famous and important cultural exhibits on the Muse-um Island include the breathtaking Pergamon Altar and the stunning Ishtar Gate. In 1999, the Museum Island complex was declared UNESCO World Heritage. The five museums on Museum Island are: Pergamon Museum (Pergamonmuseum) Bode Museum New Museum (Neues Museum) Old National Gallery (Alte Nationalgalerie) Old Museum (Altes Museum)

The Reichstag is an internationally recognisable symbol of democracy and the current home of the German parliament. The currywursts origins are attributed specifically to Berlin. • 3.4.6 SHOPPING

Stroll down Kurfrstendamm or through the shopping malls at Potsdamer Platz. Dis-cover small individual boutiques with the latest fashion in Mitte. Simply wander from one shop window to the next and be inspired. Unlike other German cities, Berlin does not have a central pedestrian zone. In addition to the two most famous shopping miles, Kurfrstendamm and Friedrichstrae, each of Berlins neighborhoods (Kiez) has its own individual character to be discovered.

Potsdamer Platz and Leipziger PlatzThe new city centre on and around Potsdamer Platz has created many shopping op-portunities in the heart of the city. Discover the unlimited variety of shops in the two major shopping centres: Mall of Berlin on Leipziger Platz and Potsdamer Platz Arkaden. Potsdamer Platz Arkaden does not only offer shops from well-known brands, but also a number of small, independent boutiques, many restaurants and places offer-ing snacks to satisfy your hunger and rest your feet. The high-end Mall of Berlin, one of the largest shopping centres in the city, features an exclusive selection of 270 quality shops and boutiques and an extensive food court the perfect place to take a break from all the shopping.

FriedrichstraeFriedrichstrae is Berlins main shopping street and its north-south axis, which runs in a straight line through Mitte and Kreuzberg. It is 3.5 kilometres long and one of the citys most important arterial roads. You can stroll and shop here, visit the famous Checkpoint Charlie border crossing or one of the theatres.

KurfrstendammThe best-known and most popular shopping street in Berlin runs from Breit scheid-platz to Halensee and is home to multiple department stores and shops of major chains. The closer you get to Halensee, the classier the boutiques and the more lux-urious the shop windows.

Hackescher MarktThis neighbourhood in Mitte is not just a popular spot for nightlife, but also a fashion-able shopping district with a charm of its own. This is the perfect spot to shop looks created and designed right here in Berlin, including pieces by many young designers.Youll want to check out the famous Hackesche Hfe, Neue Schnhauser Strae, and Oranienburger Strae. The entire neighbourhood has an old-school Berlin charm, with narrow streets, less tall buildings and a remarkably friendly atmosphere.

SchlostraeSchlostrae runs 1.5 km from Walther-Schreiber-Platz to the Steglitz Town Hall. Walther-Schreiber-Platz is home to Schloss-Straen-Center and Berlins first Primark store, particularly popular amongst young people. Forum Steglitz was one of the first shopping malls in Germany to utilise the shop-in-shop concept. As you continue along Schlostrae, youll find the Karstadt department store and the next shopping centre: Boulevard Berlin. You can literally shop under the stars or waves at Das Schloss (The Castle). Visual worlds are projected onto the ceilings inside this mall to create an incomparable shopping experience.

AlexanderplatzAlexanderplatz has always been one of the liveliest places in Berlin, with shops, cinemas, restaurants and many attractions within walking distance.

  • 3.6 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS (EC)

The European Championships are a new multi-sport event, which combines the elite European Championships of a number of the most popular sports in Europe and will take place for the first time in 2018.

The concept was introduced and developed by European Championships Manage-ment (ECM). It is governed by the participating European Federations, in partnership with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the host cities and ECM, which coor-dinate the project and ensure that it is delivered with the highest level of quality and reaches as many spectators as possible.

The first edition of the European Championships will be jointly hosted by Glasgow (Aquatics, Cycling, Gymnastics, Golf, Rowing, Triathlon) and Berlin (Athletics) across 11 days of celebration from 2 12 August 2018.

The new European Championships event can be summarised as follows:

    I. A limited number of sports are invited to participate (7 in 2018).

II. The existing European Championships of the participating sports and new Eu-ropean Championships in road cycling and golf are staged together during the same calendar period in a coordinated timetable.

III. The timetable of the individual championships will be fully coordinated into one overall schedule to maximise media exposure as well as spectator experience.

IV. Each participating European Federation will remain responsible for the organ-isation of its own championships within the framework of the new European Championships.

    V. Common umbrella branding of the new European Championships is applied on-site, on air, in digital and print media across all participating sports.

VI. Hosting procedures are coordinated to stage each of the sports in as few cities as possible, encouraging host cities to use, where possible, already existing fa-cilities to create a sustainable format.

VII. The new European Championships are built on the power of aggregation, de-signed to create more media exposure and prominence for the participating sports.

This innovative new approach brings the existing European Championships together in a sustainable format once every four years in order to continue building the sports prestige, profile and media exposure.

What is special about the European Championships?

The European Championships is born out of the desire to create the grandest of stag-es in Europe on which to crown the accomplishments of European Champions. The event aims to increase the level of awareness and recognition such achievements deserve by creating a must-watch, must-attend experience that elevates all Champi-ons of Europe. As an example, we are inspired by the feats of swimmer Adam Peaty. At the 2014 European Aquatics Championships, Peaty won four gold medals and set two world records yet few know his name. We aim to change that. For Athletes and spectators alike, the goal is to deliver a new spectacle for the international sporting calendar positioned among the worlds top sporting events that aspires to reach be-yond the dedicated fan to a much broader audience, creating the most captivating event possible.

Key Benefits for the sports participating in the 2018 European Championships:

the whole is greater than the sum of parts helps clean a crowded sports calendar sports benefit from enhanced exposure from the EBU (approximately 1.03 billion

viewers in EBU territory alone and across Asia, Africa, the Middle East and the Americas)

increased offering for sports fans of European Championships level in a multi- sport event compared to championships in individual sports

larger TV audience figures and market shares for broadcast partners opportunity for broadcast partners to present the diversity of sports in a com-

    pressed and structured format.

    8.1 THE OLYMPIC STADIUM

    8.1.1 GENERAL INFORMATION

The Berlin Olympic Stadium is both a historical site and a state-of-the-art multi-sports arena. It was built on the remains of a former horse racing track in the ear-ly 20th century and has been modernised several times since, for example for the 1936 Olympic Games and the 1974 FIFA World Cup. The stadium was remodelled for the 2006 FIFA World Cup and the re-inauguration took place in 2004. Since then the Berlin Olympic Stadium has welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors to sporting and cultural events, proving that its spectacular architecture and modern technology make it one of the leading stadiums in the world, including the famous blue track which was made the fastest on earth by Usain Bolts two legendary World Records set during the IAAF World Championships Berlin 2009.

The Olympic Stadium is home to the annual International Stadium Festival (ISTAF), one of the most prestigious events in the athletics calendar. It also hosted the final of the 2006 FIFA World Cup, along with five preliminary matches as well as the IAAF World Championships Berlin 2009 and the UEFA Champions League Final 2015. Every year, it stages open-air concerts featuring the most popular bands and sing-ers in the world. Gunsn Roses and the Rolling Stones performed here just a few weeks ago.

To learn more about the Olympic Stadiums history, facts and figures, please visit the website www.olympiastadion-berlin.de.

The stadium is situated in the heart of Berlins Olympic Park, which, at 110 hectares, is the worlds largest urban sports complex. The park is home to one of Germanys top football teams, Hertha BSC, and several other sports organisations and institu-tions. The warm-up areas are located to the north of the stadium.

Please note that written press representatives and photographers cannot access the warm-up areas.

  • The purpose of the Mixed Zone is to give media representatives a chance to inter-view athletes as they leave the infield. After their event, all athletes pass through the Mixed Zone(s), but it is up to the individual athlete to decide whether or not to speak to the media.

The Mixed Zone will be divided into two areas: the ENG area, accessible only to ENG crews, and the press area for the written press and radio reporters.

Photographers will not be allowed to enter the Mixed Zone.

For special information regarding the TV Live Mixed Zone, please refer to the EPC Broadcaster Handbook.

    8.4 TEAM HOTELS

    8.4.1 TEAM HOTELS MEDIA ACCESS

Designated Media Areas at the Maritim Hotel

The Maritim Hotel Berlin, is the only team hotel which will have limited access per-mitted for Media. There will be a Media Area set up in this hotel, where accredited Team Members and accredited Media Representatives can meet. Media Represent-atives can access the room from outside the hotel through the entrance of the Res-taurant M (Stauffenbergstrae).

The Media Area at the Maritim Hotel, is open from 6 12 August 2018, between 10:00 22:00. It is not possible to make reservations for this room.

As individual media representatives do not have the Team Hotel Accreditation Zone on their accreditation card they are not permitted to enter the team hotels. The only exception, apart from the Maritim Media Area, is in case of a team press conferences, held at the team hotel.

Access to Team Accreditation Zones in Team Hotels

Maritim Hotel BerlinIn general, media representatives do not receive the Team Hotel Accreditation Zone on their accreditation card and are therefore not allowed to enter this zone. At the Maritim Hotel Berlin, the Team Hotel Accreditation Zone covers the entire hotel, ex-cept for two areas, the Media Area and the General Team Meeting Room / Press Conference Room. Therefore, these rooms can be entered by accredited media rep-resentatives and are accessible from outside the hotel. In case individual accredit-ed media representatives need to enter the Team Hotel Accreditation Zone at the Maritim Hotel Berlin, the following procedures apply:

The Team Press Liaison can extend invitations to accredited Media Representa-tives, or the Media Representatives can apply for an invitation for the Team Hotels by filling in a Media Invitation Form and returning it to the Main Media Centre (MMC) at the latest by 17:00 the day before the desired interview. The form is available at the MMC.

Arriving at the Maritim Hotel Berlin, a Team Member must meet the accredited Me-dia Representative at the TAC, at a pre-agreed date and time. The accredited Media

Representative must exchange the signed Media Invitation Form and his accred-itation card for an Escort Pass at the TAC. A Team Member must accompany the Media Representative throughout the visit.

The Escort Pass will be valid from 09:00 to 20:00, must be worn visibly at all times and returned to the TAC when leaving the hotel. The pass allows access to the entireMaritim Hotel Berlin, except the Catering Area. Cameras are not allowed, except if the Team Leader or Team Press Liaison has an express wish to allow their use. Camerasmay be stored at the TAC for the duration of the visit.

Only a limited number of passes per Team Delegation per day can be issued. The number of passes depends on the size of the team. One (1) pass will be handed outto smaller Teams and two (2) to larger Teams at the same time.

The inviting Team assumes full responsibility for the presence of an invited media representative and is accountable for any and all consequences in relation to theirvisit. The Escort Pass can be revoked at any time at the discretion of European Athletics / LOC.

    76 77

  • Hotel Berlin, Berlin & Hotel Scandic Potsdamer PlatzAt these two Team Hotels, the Team Hotel Accreditation Zone covers only a defined area of the hotel. Media representatives can therefore easily meet the Team Mem-bers in the hotel lobby for interviews. Escort Passes are not necessary.

Press conferences at Team HotelsAt all three Team Hotels the LOC provides a General Team Meeting Room, which can also be used as a Press Conference Room. These rooms are located outside the Team Hotel Accreditation Zone. Nevertheless, the rooms are accessible only for accredited media representatives and accredited Team Members. Accreditation will be checked at the rooms entrance. Please note that at the Hotel Berlin, Berlin and the Maritim Hotel Berlin access for media representatives is from outside the hotel only.
