Foreword

Dear media representative,

Welcome to a new season in the Women’s EHF Champions League and to the official media guide for qualification tournaments.

In mid-September 2014, the eight matches that will determine the final fixtures of the 2014/15 Women’s EHF Champions League will throw-off in venues across Europe. The two qualification tournaments are the last hurdle standing between eight teams and the remaining two places in the second stage of the competition, the Main Round. With a new playing system this season, there is much excitement surrounding the two knockout events. For the teams, there is only one objective and that is to be in first place at the end of the weekend; for them, winning is everything.

Playing for the final spot in Group A, the teams in Group 1 are Champions League tested veterans. FTC Rail Cargo Hungaria is back for their 15th season. Joining them is HC Leipzig of Germany and BNTU-BelAZ Minsk Reg. of Belarus; both teams have 27 Champions League seasons worth of experience combined. SERCODAK Dalfsen of the Netherlands is also a returning contender. However, with many Champions League rounds behind them, none of the teams in this group has ever won the title; will this be their lucky season?

Group B awaits the winner of the qualification Group 2. Former Champions League finalists, FC Midtjylland of Denmark, will join the Norwegians from Byasen Trondheim, who are gearing up for their 12th participation in this elite competition. HC Podravka Vegeta hailing from Croatia is the only team in the qualification tournaments who has won the coveted trophy and have been part of Champions League for over 20 years. Finally, we welcome Women’s EHF Champions League debutants WHC Radnicki Kragujevac from Serbia.

There are exciting matches ahead for all.

We pride ourselves on our positive and cooperative relationship with the press and media and I am sure this will continue and develop in the future. Should you require any information, help or assistance during the course of the season, your first point of contact is the EHF Media and Communications Department based in our office in Vienna. They will be more than happy to assist you with any questions you might have.

We look forward to working with you in the upcoming season!

Women’s EHF FINAL4 goes to Budapest until 2016

Important regulations Extra-time and penalty throws

If a semi-final match or the final (place 1/2) ends in a draw, there will be a five minutes break followed by one extra time of 2 x 5 minutes, there will be a one minute half-time break at the half time for the changeover of teams. If the placement match (place 3/4) ends in a draw, there shall be no extra time, the match will be decided directly by penalty throws. In the semi-finals and/or final (place 1/2), if there is no winner after the extra time, the match will be decided by penalty throws.

Rules for execution of penalty throws

Prior to penalty throwing, each team shall name five players eligible to play at the end of the match by handing the referees a list of numbers. These players shall then take one throw each, alternating with their opponents. Each team is free to determine the sequence in which throwers will take their throws. The goalkeepers may be freely selected from the match report and exchanged in accordance with the Rules of the game. Goalkeepers may take throws and throwers may play as goalkeepers. The referees shall choose the goal at which throws are taken. The team taking the first penalty throw shall be determined by the referees by drawing lots. The team winning the draw may choose whether it wishes to throw first or last. If scores are equal after the first round of penalty throwing, it shall be continued until a decision is reached. In the second round, the other team shall start. Again five players shall be named who are eligible to play (the players named before may be named once again). In the second round, a decision is reached when a goal difference arises after both teams have taken one throw each. Eligible players are players entered in the match report who have not been disqualified or suspended at the time of the final whistle.

Following its successful premiere in Budapest last year, the Women’s EHF FINAL4 will stay for another two years in the Hungarian capital the EHF Executive Committee confirmed on Thursday 18 September, on the eve of the EHF Congress in Dublin.

Hungarian side Györi Audi ETO KC won the competition in May 2014 in front of 10,000 frenetic fans and will now have the potential chance to defend their title on home soil, should they make it to the final weekend once again.

The agreement which was reached with the Hungarian Handball Federation as organisers sees the event being played in Budapest’s Papp Laszlo Sportarena in 2015 and 2016.

Last year marked the first time that the Women’s EHF Champions League culminated in a FINAL4 tournament.

The men’s counterpart, the VELUX EHF FINAL4, has been taking place in Cologne’s 20,000-capacity LANXESS arena since 2010 with the current contract also running until the 2016 season.

Qualification Tournament 1

Preview:

There is no doubt Group 1 of the qualification round will offer top quality Champions League action and the fact that one of the participants will be sorely missed in the Group Matches stage makes the Leipzig showdown the first remarkable clash of the 2014/15 Women’s EHF Champions League. All action apart from the third place match will be streamed live on www.ehfTV.com.

Although Ferencváros made Győr sweat for the Hungarian Supercup (the Champions League holder eventualy won 29-28) the rest of the Budapest greens’ friendlies did not go well. Coach Gábor Elek is not concerned about the odd results, the club legend claimed the only important thing was to reach peak form by the time the Leipzig tournament began. The Hungarian team will meet Sercodak Dalfsen in the semi-final. The Dutch champion met a Hungarian opponent last year when they went down against Érd in the 3rd round of the Cup Winners’ Cup.

Ferencváros cannot afford to believe they are already in the final but the Hungarian runners-up are clear favorites none more so than Leipzig in the other semi. The final is expected to be played between Leipzig and Ferencváros but they will be made to work for their money. If they do get to decide who get to join the cream of European women’s handball between each other, than it will be Champions League action at its best.

The home side is taking on BNTU Belaz Minsk, the team they eliminated on their way to the final of last year’s qualification group. Leipzig won the final against hosts Byasen and this time the Germans play host, which makes it a particularly mazy run for the Belarusian team who lost by five goals against Leipzig in Trondheim. The German Cup winners lost Susann Müller – who joined holders Győr to replace the home-bound Katarina Bulatovic – and are facing a devastating injury crisis which keeps three of their key players sidelined.

FTC-Rail Cargo Hungaria (HUN)

Ferencvaros did their best to keep in touch with Women’s EHF Champions League winners Györ during the season and managed to finish second in the league, just two points behind their traditional rivals.

Neither side had much to worry about in the semi-finals and set up two more encounters in the final. Györ did the damage in the first leg at Ferencvaros with a 32:25 win and wrapped it up thanks to a 30:25 win at home, consigning FTC to another qualification battle to reach Europe’s elite competition.

They were successful in their qualification bid last season, overcoming domestic rivals Erd to earn a place in the group matches, where they finished third behind eventual MVM EHF FINAL4 participants FC Midtjylland and Buducnost. They moved on to the Cup Winners’ Cup but that run was short-lived, ending with a quarter-final exit at the hands of Viborg.

HC Leipzig (GER)

Long before the end of the championship series, which consists of the best six teams from the Bundesliga, it was a fact that HC Leipzig were going to finish second behind Thüringer HC once again.

With two match days left, Leipzig were already ten points behind THC, and a 39:31 defeat to the Thüringer team in the last match of the season reminded the Leipzig ladies of their position as Germany’s number two, 14 points adrift of their rivals at the end.

HC BNTU-BelAz Minsk (BLR)

BNTU-BelAZ have kept the league title of Belarus safe in their hands since 2009 and this season was no different. The absolute domination of this team started from the very beginning as they help top spot after the first phase of the championship. The second phase saw the top four teams proceeded and once more BNTU-BelAZ proved their domination by winning 14 matches from 18, while 3 defeats and one draw did little to threaten their place at the top ahead of biggest rival Gomel.

Kragujevac, Serbia

Qualification Tournament 2

Preview: On Sunday evening, Buducnost, Thüringer HC and WHC Vardar SCBT will know the fourth and last team of their group in the Women’s EHF Champions League. In Kragujevac, the Sport Centar Mladost “Jezero” will be the venue of Group 2 of the qualification tournament, in which FC Midtjylland from Denmark, Byasen Trondheim from Norway, HC Podravka Vegeta from Croatia and the hosts WHC Radnicki Kragujevac will be fighting out the last ticket for Group B of the Group Matches among them.

The semi-finals will take place on Saturday, and the final as well as the match for the third place are being played on Sunday. All matches apart from the third place game will be shown live and free of charge on www.ehfTV.com.

Podravka Vegeta, Champions League winners back in 1996, are chasing new glory, while Norway’s almost eternal number two are trying to reach the Champions League for the first time since 2012. However, it is a Byasen team who have said goodbye to several players compared to last season, who is entering the courts in Serbia.

Last season, FC Midtjylland reached the Women’s EHF FINAL4, and this Saturday evening they will start the attempt to copy that achievement. However, last season’s number two in Denmark should not expect an easy task in this semi-final against the hosts who consist of a mixture of experience and youth, and who will probably be able to count on considerable support from the standings. FC Midtjylland are prepared for an enthusiastic home crowd.

“I think we should simply leave everything around us out of our heads and just focus on our own game. We depend on each other, but if we all perform and our best level, I see our chances as being really good,” FCM line player Sabine Pedersen told ehfCL.com.

Midtjylland will be handicapped in their attempt to reach the group phase, though, as right back Line Jørgensen has sustained a knee injury which has called for immediate surgery. At the moment it is unknown how long the 24-year-old Danish international will be sidelined.

FC Midtjylland made it to the MVM EHF FINAL4, but they were not able to defend their Danish championship from last season.

The final was as far as the team under the only female coach in the Danish league Helle Thomsen could go this time around.

In the two-legged final, Viborg HK proved to be slightly too tough an opponent, just as they had been in the cup final.

However, it took two close matches before FC Midtjylland were defeated. They started by winning their home game 25:23, but Viborg´s 24:21 victory at home in the second leg was exactly enough for a 47:46 aggregate win.

Byasen Trondheim (NOR)

Before taking over as new head coach in Byasen, the Dane Claus Mogensen predicted that the Trondheim team would be runners-up behind Larvik HK once again.

And this was exactly the way it turned out. Byasen came in second behind the untouchable Larvik. This was the case in the league, in which the official Norwegian champions was found and later on in the playoffs which have no significance to the title in Norway, but which was also won by Larvik ahead of Byasen.

HC Podravka Vegeta (CRO)

The ten-year long reign of Podravka on the Croatian throne came to the end last season after the defending champions failed to earn a single win against Lokomotiva Zagreb. Podravka lost both games in the main round of the Croatian league and in the regional WRHL they managed only to draw Lokomotiva in the home game and lost the away encounter too. While finishing four points behind Zagreb in the domestic competition they ranked fifth in the WRHL, 12 points below the winners Buducnost. The new season will mark a return of the captain Miranda Tatari after she spent one season at Russian club Astrakhanochka.
