Spokane hits the official midway point of their season tonight as they host the rival Tri-City Americans for the third time this year and fifth of 12 head-to-head contests overall. The Chiefs are 1-2-1-0 against the Americans so far, including a 0-1-1-0 record at home. They lost 5-6 in Kennewick in the most recent matchup, back on December 3, and lost 4-5 in overtime on November 5 in the last battle at Spokane Arena. Ethan McIndoe led the Chiefs in the Dec. 3 game with 2 goals and 1 assist while Tri-City’s Dylan Coghlan earned the game’s first star with 3 assists.

In the season series, Kailer Yamamoto (5-3-8) and Hudson Elynuik (1-7-8) have been the offensive stars for Spokane. Keanu Yamamoto (3-3-6) and McIndoe (2-3-5) have also been key contributors. Morgan Geekie, who has taken over Tri-City’s top scorer spot with a very strong December, has been the biggest thorn for the Chiefs with 4 goals and 6 assists. Vladislav Lukin (4-4-8), Michael Rasmussen (5-2-7) and Tyler Sandhu (1-6-7) have also chipped in.

The Chiefs hope to maintain momentum from Wednesday night’s exciting 5-4 overtime win over the Seattle Thunderbirds, during which they outshot the T-Birds 52-20. Kailer Yamamoto was all over the ice with 1 goal and 3 assists while Elynuik scored twice and added 1 assist. Rookie defenseman Ty Smith scored his 1st career game-winning goal at the 1:12 mark of OT.

Spokane has been sending plenty of rubber toward opposing goaltenders lately, averaging 40 shots on goal over their last 4 games, including a 95-44 combined margin in back-to-back games versus the Thunderbirds earlier this week.

Tri-City has hit a rough patch recently, losing 5 of their last 6 games, including a 3-4 defeat at the hands of the Portland Winterhawks on Wednesday night in the Rose City. Rasmussen, Geekie and Parker AuCoin scored for the Americans but they were 0-for-7 on the power play. They beat the Winterhawks in the first half of the home-and-home series on Tuesday night in Kennewick, 6-2, behind 3-point nights from Rasmussen (2G, 1A), and Coghlan (3A). AuCoin scored twice, including the game-winning goal early in a 4-goal third period for Tri-City.

NOT BAD, JAD… Second-year forward Jaret Anderson-Dolan has turned up the heat over the last month, scoring 13 goals and adding 8 assists to go along with a +10 rating over the last 14 games, including 8G & 4A over the last 8 games. Four of those 13 goals have come on the PP. Anderson-Dolan has 4 multi-goal games this season after recording one last year. TAKE NOTICE… Kailer Yamamoto has been on a torrid pace during his draft year. The third-year forward has 48 points (21G-27A) in 29 GP to start the season, good for 8th in the WHL’s points list. He has piled up 4G & 13A on his current 8-game point streak after a 9-game streak earlier this season. He has 16 multi-point games, including five 3-point games and one 4-point (1G & 3A vs SEA on 12/28). The Chiefs are 11-2-3-0 when Yamamoto scores a goal. He was named to the 2017 CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in Quebec and will play for Team Orr. Yamamoto earned WHL Player of the Week honors on Oct. 31. He has been blanked from the stat sheet just four times (once leaving early with injury). With a late birthday, he will first become eligible for the NHL Entry Draft in 2017. A Spokane native, he impressed in stints at international tournaments w/ Team USA (Five Nations, U-18, U-20 NJEC) and produced 128 points (42G, 86A) in his first 2 seasons with the Chiefs (125 GP). Multiple news outlets project Yamamoto as a future 1st round pick, most recently Sportsnet’s updated December rankings with him at 16th overall. VETERAN ADDITION… On Dec. 27, the Chiefs added 20-year-old Alex Mowbray. The 5-foot-11 forward previously played 177 games with the Medicine Hat Tigers, including a 22-point (11G, 11A) campaign last season. This year, he was playing for the Camrose Kodiaks (AJHL), where he had 20 points (10G, 10A) and 73 PIM in 32 games. SHAKE IT UP… On Dec. 14, the Chiefs completed a trade with the Saskatoon Blades that brought 19-year-old forward Wyatt Sloboshan and 18-year-old defenseman Nolan Reid to the Lilac City while sending overage forward Markson Bechtold and 19-year-old defenseman Evan Fiala to the Blades. Spokane also acquired a 3rd round pick in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft. PAVEL PARTY… Forward Pavel Kousal was selected by the Czech Ice Hockey Association to represent the Czech Republic in the 2016 World Junior A Challenge from Dec. 11-17 in Bonnyville, Alberta. He scored 1G & 1A in 5 games as the Czechs earned a 4th place finish, losing to Russia in the Bronze Medal game. Kousal has 7 goals and 2 assists in his first 28 WHL games with Spokane. NUIK WITH THE PUCK… Hudson Elynuik has been a catalyst for the Chiefs, with 8 goals and 11 assists over the last 12 games as he briefly matched recently-returned-from-injury Kailer Yamamoto for the team’s scoring lead. Elynuik has recorded ten multi-point games, including a 4-point game on Oct. 1 (1-3-4) and a 5-point game on Nov. 25 (3-2-5). He has 3 multi-goal games. MAKE THEM COUNT… Spokane has actually fared better with fewer shots as they are 8-3-0-0 when putting fewer than 30 shots on goal, but only 7-11-5-0 when they get 30+ pucks through to the opposing goaltender. They put a season-high 52 shots on goal against Seattle on Dec. 28 in a 5-4 OT win. SEND THE HATS FLYING… On Nov. 25 vs. Vancouver, teammates Hudson Elynuik and Jaret Anderson-Dolan each recorded a hat trick. It was Spokane’s first multiple hat trick game since the 2013-14 season, when Mitch Holmberg and Dominic Zwerger each tallied 3 goals against Kamloops (Feb. 23, 2014; 9-4 W). Anderson-Dolan added his second of the year on Dec. 7 vs. VIC. SCORING FROM ALL ANGLES… Over the last 15 games, the Chiefs have scored 63 goals (4.2 average), with 16 different skaters recording at least one, led by Jaret Anderson-Dolan with 13, Keanu Yamamoto with 9 and Hudson Elynuik with 8. BIG BROTHER… The older of the Yamamoto brothers, Keanu, has picked up 22 assists in 35 games including 13 power play helpers and a 6-assist game on Nov. 25 vs. Vancouver, which tied for the 2nd-most assists in one game in franchise history. He broke a career-high 14-game point streak (8G-12A) on Dec. 27, including 4-game goal streak ending on Dec. 7. Keanu is the elder statesman on this year’s Chiefs’ squad with 234 games played. The Yamamoto brothers have been left off the stat sheet just once this season, with at least one of the two recording a point in 34 of 35 games. THEY’RE WATCHING… The Chiefs had five forwards named to the NHL Central Scouting’s preliminary “Players to Watch” list, as announced on Oct. 4 with goaltender Dawson Weatherill joining the same five in their updated November list. Kailer Yamamoto earned an “A” rating, indicating a potential first-round pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. Jaret Anderson-Dolan got a “B” (2nd-3rd) while four players – Ethan McIndoe, Pavel Kousal, Jake McGrew, and Weatherill – earned “C” scores. BACK ON TRACK… After a rough patch in early December, allowing a goal in 7-straight games, the Chiefs’ penalty kill has rebounded lately, allowing just 1 goal in their last 10 opportunities (over 4 games) while scoring one shorthanded goal. BLACK & WHITE… Three Chiefs – D Ty Smith, F Koby Morrisseau and F Eli Zummack – were named by Hockey Canada to the 2016 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Ontario (Oct. 27 – Nov. 5). Smith and Zummack competed for Team Canada Black while Morrisseau is on Team White. Smith was also honored as team captain for Canada Black and tallied two goals in Black’s 4-3 win over Team USA to clinch their group. Black went on to earn silver as Smith and Zummack partnered up for their only goal in a 2-1 loss to Sweden. Morrisseau and Canada White fell in the bronze medal game to Russia. YOUTH MOVEMENT… The Chiefs are one of the youngest teams in the WHL this season with 18 players born in 1998 or later, including six 17-year-olds and four 16-year-olds. Nine of the 18 are WHL rookies.

CLEAN SHEET… The Chiefs set a franchise record unlikely to be broken on Saturday, Nov. 12 vs. Everett as they incurred zero penalty minutes. The previous record (2) had been reached twice previously. PREMIER PROSPECTS… Three Chiefs’ prospects – all forwards – competed for their respective provincial teams at the 2016 Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup. Carter Chorney (2nd Rd, 39th Overall in 2016 WHL Bantam Draft) scored two points for Alberta, including the GWG in OT of the championship game, Ethan Leyh (8th, 160th) racked up 3G & 4A for BC and Cordel Larson (9th, 186th) represented Team Saskatchewan. LINE IN THE SAND… The Chiefs have been steadily successful when controlling things in their own end this season. They are 13-2-0-0 when allowing 2 or fewer goals against but 2-12-5-1 with allowing 3 or more. HURRICANE HUDSON… Chiefs forward Hudson Elynuik was selected in the third round (74th overall) in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes. The towering centerman scored 19 goals and added 25 assists in 56 GP last season, turning heads after the turn of the calendar year with a point in 17 of 20 games starting on January 9, including a 10-game point streak. Elynuik’s father Pat was the 8th Overall pick in the 1986 draft to the Winnipeg Jets & went on to play 500+ NHL games. HEY MR. CARTER... Scott Carter was announced as the Chiefs’ new GM on Sept. 8. A Penticton, B.C. native, Carter boasts 28+ years of experience as a hockey scout, business manager and entrepreneur. He was an NHL regional scout from 1987-2015, President & GM of the Penticton Vees from 2004-2008, BCHL Executive of the Year in 2005, co-founder of the BCHHF in 1991, co-founder of the WPHL in 1994 and has been a full partner in Vaughn Custom Sports since 1996. Carter replaced long-time GM Tim Speltz, who took the Director of Western Area Scouting for the Toronto Maple Leafs after 26 years at the helm of the Chiefs. NATIONAL NODS… The Spokane Chiefs had 6 players recognized with invitations to national team camps over the summer. Four players – D Ty Smith, D Matt Leduc, F Eli Zummack and F Koby Morrisseau – were invited to Hockey Canada’s U17 camp. Jaret Anderson-Dolan went to Canada’s U18 camp. Kailer Yamamoto competed at USA Hockey’s National Junior Evaluation Camp, then joined Team USA at the USA Hockey CCM All-American Prospects Game in Philadelphia on Sept. 22 (he recorded 2A & a +1). BENCH BOSS… Don Nachbaur is in his 7th season as head coach having signed an extension through the 2017-18 season. The WHL veteran ranks 1st in franchise history in career wins (249) and eclipsed Mike Babcock this season for the all-time lead in career games coached for the Chiefs earlier this season (now at 456). Entering the season, his .552 winning percentage with Spokane ranked 2nd behind Hardy Sauter (.629). Nachbaur is one of four WHL coaches with 600+ career wins (680). He is also the winningest coach in Tri-City Americans history w/ 235. CZECH THEM OUT… The Chiefs drafted Czech teammates Ondrej Najman and Pavel Kousal with the 22nd & 82nd picks, respectively, in the 2016 CHL Import Draft. Najman scored 18 goals & 44 points in 38 GP, including 4 multi-goal games, adding 3 goals & 3 assists in 5 games with the Czechs at the 2016 IIHF U18 World Championship in Grand Forks, N.D. Kousal racked up 20 goals & 23 assists in the same 38 GP, including a stretch in which he scored a point in 11 of 12 games. He recorded 3 assists with the Czechs at the U18s.
