Kemble, ON – (September 16, 2017) – This weekend the Cobble Beach Golf Resort Community hosts the Cobble Beach Concours d’Elegance, which has grown over five years to include a variety of events for all car enthusiasts. As Canada’s most prestigious classic automotive show, the Concours d’Elegance has become a renowned event in the classic automobile community, drawing vehicles and enthusiasts from around North America. The weekend now includes events spanning Friday through Sunday. Saturday is filled with a variety of events from the Participants’ Tour for Concours car owners who are touring the local area in their vintage vehicles to Cars & Coffee at Cobble Beach presented by Segal Motorcar, an opportunity for local car enthusiasts to showcase their cherished automobiles. The day also includes two seminars; one with a panel of experts hosted by Hagerty and the other a showing of vintage race films. The day concludes with a Kick Off Reception presented by Chubb for judges, participants and honoured guests to celebrate the automotive spirit while giving back to the Sunnybrook Foundation through a live auction. Sunday holds the main event, the Cobble Beach Concours d’Elegance with over a hundred rare and elegant vehicles tastefully arranged on the 18th fairway as they compete for recognition of their authenticity and quality workmanship.

Gates open at 9:00 A.M on Sunday September 17 for the main event. With nineteen judged classes, the Concours includes antique vehicles from the early 1900s to exotic vehicles at the turn of the century. Automobiles are judged on elegance, authenticity and quality workmanship. There are fourteen special awards given out each year in addition to the class awards for each of the nineteen different classes. Vehicles and their owners travel from all over North America, including five provinces and thirteen states.

This year the Participants’ Tour is highlighting two local landmarks. The first stop is at the Historic Leith Church, a designated heritage site and the home to the Leith Pioneer Cemetery, the final burial place of the acclaimed Canadian painter Tom Thomson. The Church is maintained by a non-profit organization called the Friends of Leith Church. The second stop on the Tour is Inglis Falls, an eighteen meter cascade of water from the Sydenham River. Inglis Falls is the best known and most visited waterfall in the area. The Tour concludes with a drive through the historic downtown of the City of Owen Sound, ON, which celebrated its 160th anniversary this year.

New to the roster of events this year, Cars & Coffee at Cobble Beach presented by Segal Motorcar, adding up to 150 classic automobiles to the Cobble Beach Concours d’Elegance weekend. The event incorporates more local and provincial classic car communities into the weekend, while giving back to the region by supporting the Owen Sound Regional Hospital Foundation. On display on the driving range at the Cobble Beach Golf Resort Community, the event includes vehicles 25 years and older.

There are two seminars at this year’s Cobble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The first, What Judges Look For in Concours Cars, will consist of a panel of judges, including the Chief and Honourary Chief Judges, Mr. John Carlson and Dr. Paul Sable. The seminar is produced by Hagerty and moderated by Jonathan Stein. The second seminar showcases three vintage auto films. The first film, Climb Dance (1989) directed by Jean Louis Mourney, is the iconic rally film celebrating the Pikes Peak Hill Climb victories of Ari Vatanen and Bobby Unser in 1989. Next is The Red Grifo (2016) directed by Guy Smith, who will introduce the film, which recounts a family’s multigenerational influence of a rare automobile that bore the signatures of automotive icons like Bizzarini and Giugiaro. To conclude, we are showing a film to celebrate 50 years of Mercedes AMG.

Saturday concludes with the Kick Off Reception Presented by Chubb for the Judges, Participants and honoured guests of the Cobble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The evening celebrates the automotive spirit and includes a live auction in support of the Sunnybrook Foundation.

Proceeds from the 2017 Cobble Beach Concours d’Elegance will help build the new home of Sunnybrook’s Hurvitz Brain Sciences Program, the only facility in Canada where world-class researchers and clinicians will work together to revolutionize treatment of the three most common brain disorders — dementia, stroke, and mood and anxiety disorders. Under one roof, Sunnybrook’s neurologists, psychiatrists, neurosurgeons and physicists will collaborate to accelerate discoveries that will benefit patients in every corner of the province and across the country and globe.

Sunnybrook’s brain sciences experts embed cutting-edge research in clinical care decisions, focusing on all age groups, from youth to the elderly. Their teams are already changing and saving lives with an innovative clot-busting stroke treatment, pioneering the use focused ultrasound technology to safely open the blood-brain barrier, leading-edge imaging processes for dementia research, and ground-breaking discoveries involving the critical role of sleep and the link between mental illness and heart disease.

The new, 60,000 square-foot Hurvitz Brain Sciences Centre will enable Sunnybrook to build on these strengths. Funded entirely by private donors, the centre will feature a critically-needed psychiatry inpatient unit, including an area dedicated to caring for youth, ambulatory clinics for stroke and cognitive neurology, and purpose-built space for research and education.

what Is a concours d’eleGance?Derived from the French term meaning a competition of elegance, the Concours d’Elegance has a history dating back to 17th Century French society. It began as an event with horse-drawn carriages being paraded through the parks of Paris, France and has evolved into a display of antique and classic cars for both competition and celebration.

who beGan the cobble beach concours d’eleGance?Upon purchasing the land where the Cobble Beach Golf Resort Community now sits. Willis McLeese (1913-2011)

and his son, Rob, could envision a wonderful promenade of beautiful antique and classic cars parading down Cobble Beach Drive to the elegant Clubhouse. This inspired the idea of a Concours d’Elegance at Cobble Beach. In 2011, Joseph Sulpizi, CEO and Founder of The Brand Factory, introduced Billy Smilovsky of Engineered Automotive to Rob McLeese, CEO and co-creator of Cobble Beach. With a shared vision of producing a Concours d’Elegance at Cobble Beach, they have fulfilled a dream of Willis McLeese and, consequently, a dream of their own.

where are the vehIcles from? The vehicles are brought in from around North America. We have vehicles coming from 5 provinces and 13 states. Each vehicle has a sign which lists where it is from.

what Is the dIfference between the concours d’eleGance and cars & coffee at cobble beach Presented by seGal motorcar? The Cobble Beach Concours d’Elegance is limited to a select group of invited vehicles with unique historical significance specifically chosen to tell a thoughtfully-scripted story. Cars hail from around North America and are judged in classes on their elegance with class awards and 14 special awards. Cars & Coffee at Cobble Beach presented by Segal Motorcar features a diverse group of vehicles that celebrate the automotive-enthusiast’s spirit. Most vehicles are from Ontario and the event includes a People’s Choice award.

why the sunnybrooK foundatIon?The Sunnybrook Foundation has been very helpful to the McLeese family (founders of the event) over the past thirty-five years and they chose to give back through the Concours d'Elegance.

why the owen sound reGIonal hosPItal foundatIon?The Owen Sound Regional Hospital plays a key role in providing essential health care in the region. The foundation was chosen as a way to give back to the local area for their continuous support of the event.

FAQs

Page 13: Media Kit - irp-cdn.multiscreensite.com

By John Carlson, Chief Judge, Cobble Beach Concours d’Elegance

Learning how to judge a car is a life long journey. It takes a keen eye and many hours of judging experience to acquire the necessary skills to become a good judge. Judges have also attended many judging seminars and judging schools. Diplomacy is also a key ingredient. In judging circles it is often referred to as “field manner.” The Cobble Beach Concours d’Elegance values its participants and views them as the most important ingredient on the show field.

The judges at the Cobble Beach Concours will be looking for authenticity and quality workmanship in each area of the vehicle. They will deduct points for the areas that are not authentic. They will also be judging the proper fit and finish of all vehicle components. Each vehicle will be started by the owner or handler and the lights and gauges etc. will be checked for functionality. The judges will use a 100 point deduction system which is divided into categories that include body and paint finish, bright work, engine compartment detail, upholstery, chassis finish, window glass, etc. Each area will be examined for the correct components as well as the proper installation and finish.

The question is often asked, “Can a judge know everything about a particular Marque?” The answer is yes if that Marque has been their particular interest and passion. Unfortunately, it is nearly impossible for the judges to know everything about all Marques; however, they certainly know what is appropriate for various time frames. As an example, they know that electric cooling fans were not used in early ‘Antique’ cars. They know that electrician’s tape and plastic zip straps were not used. They know that certain nuts and bolts and other fasteners were used in very specific time frames. Judges know what is incorrect for specific manufacturing eras.

The selection of the winners in each class is determined by how accurate and well presented each vehicle is. When the judging process has been concluded, each judge will have a discretionary additional three points to add to their final score. These points may be added to the vehicles final score based on the judge’s interpretation of Elegance, Significance or the Presence of the vehicle.

The Cobble Beach judging process has been accredited by International Chief Judges Advisory Group. The ICJAG is now considered as the judging authority in both North America and Europe.

The class winners will be determined by the average of the overall scores and will be awarded first places and Lighthouse Awards. Only Class winners will be eligible for the Best of Show Award. The overall theme for this show is to have fun and enjoy some of the finest cars and scenery North America has to offer.

Cobble Beach Golf Resort would host a prestigious Concours d'Elegance event on the cobblestone adorned shores of Cobble Beach. (Willis did business in California and loved the Pebble Beach resort.) The McLeese vision, to see a wonderful promenade of beautiful antique and classic cars parading down Cobble Beach Drive to the elegant Clubhouse, would become a reality in 2013.

Rob’s deep commitment to renewable resources and sustainable development is entrenched in all areas of his life, including his passion for Cobble Beach Golf Resort Community.
