James is frustrated and saddened by the comments his peers are making about his sexuality. Furthermore, it appears a group of male students are creating fake social-media accounts and are sending love notes/messages to other male students as if they came from James – who is mortified at the thought of what is happening.

Questions:

If you were James’ parents what would you do?

What can James do to deal with the embarrassment?

How could those bullies understand how hurtful their actions were?

Sites/Apps - Impact

Advocates of social networking sites say that the online communities promote increased interaction with friends and family; offer teachers, librarians, and students valuable access to educational support and materials;

Opponents of social networking sites say that the sites prevent face-to-face communication; waste time on frivolous activity; alter children’s brains and behavior making them more prone to ADHD (behaviors).

Sites/Apps - Impact

Top 5 Phone Applications (United States)

1. Instagram2. Vine3. Youtube4. Snapchat5. Twitter* Text replacements like Kik (tons of these)

Scenarios

Katie and Sarah (two female 7th graders), are exchanging malicious instant messages back and forth because of a misunderstanding involving a boy that they are both interested in. The statements escalate in viciousness from trivial name-calling to very vicious and inflammatory statements, including death threats.

Questions:

Should the police be contacted?

What would you do as a parent if you discovered this problem?

What should the younglings do in this instance?

What you can do

Talk about the nature of their digital world

Hold weekly meetings (15 min) before /after a meal, and ask about their recent online experiences

If you have family dinners - No digital world

Set rules for what is and what isn’t appropriate

Watch the clock

Create a social networking contract

Help your child find balance

What you can do

Three questions your child could ask themselves:

Am I posting something I’d be embarrassed for my family to see?

Am I posting because I’m hoping someone will make me feel better about my choices?

Am I posting to hurt someone else?
