A dynamic duoAlthough many couples could not withstand the pressure of working so closely with their partner, Michel and Steven Euesden spend 24 hours a day together, living and working as a dynamic and determined team. They first met when starting at the same company on the same day in England; something they both believe was an act of fate. With a successful track record in publishing sales, The Euesdens arrived on the Costa del Sol in 1996, with bags of energy and vision.

‘It was never discussed that we would start the EWN together, but we knew that working together as a team would produce the greatest product,’ reminisced Michel. ‘We are two halves of what makes the whole, I handle the people side of the business and Steven deals with the numbers. It’s a perfect match and being able to work and live with my best friend and soul mate, makes each day a dream.’

Over the years, The Euesdens have built a respected, successful and powerful media company. They are a unique couple with a strong work ethic; if you work hard enough at something, you will achieve. This ethos is shared by each and every staff member of the EWN, to whom Michel and Steven are extremely close. There is no hierarchy, each person is important within the EWN family. Heavily invested in their product and their team, they are always looking to push boundaries and to raise the bar. They are a ‘power couple’ who know what they want and subscribe to traditional values such as the ‘customer is king’ and ‘service is paramount.’

‘The secret to the success of the EWN is down to our attitude during the good times,’ explained Steven. ‘When others were resting on their laurels, we continued to work hard at the business, building relationships with suppliers and developing our team.’

And working hard has certainly paid off. Pagination has more than doubled since the beginning, increasing to six editions, all produced in seven days (including weekends). This achievement was recognised in an article in El Pais, Spain’s leading newspaper, praising Michel and Steven on both a business and a personal level. It would be easy for The Euesdens to take a back seat but that won’t be happening any time soon.

‘The business is constantly developing and we’re looking to expand into new offices in Nerja and Gibraltar, as well as utilising our flagship office at the famous Marbella Club Hotel. As the world is modernising, so is the EWN, keeping our website current and informative, being able to access it from Smartphones and Tablets when on the go. And we always keep an eye on the local community, working with the Town Halls to produce cultural guides to keep expatriates informed. Petite, feisty and sharp as a tack, Michel is a complex mix of ‘northern grit’ and an unwavering work ethic, tempered with a heart of gold. Michel attributes the EWN’s continued success to her private and professional partnership with her husband Steven, Sales Director for the company. Equally important is her no-nonsense upbringing in Rochdale, Manchester, where she learned the benefit of honest hard work, which she has instilled in each member of the EWN team.

‘The greatest thing my parents ever gave me was a strong work ethic and I knew growing up that there is no substitute for hard work.’

She runs a tight ship, doesn’t suffer fools gladly but is full of compassion; qualities appreciated by clients, colleagues and friends alike.

‘I have been a grafter all my life and know the importance of perseverance and determination. We have to remember we are guests in Spain, so we have to work twice as hard to earn our place in the community,’ remarks Michel. ‘We want the EWN to continue to grow and help the expatriate population integrate into the Spanish society, and I’m so grateful that through the newspaper, we can help in some way.’

The local community is close to Michel’s heart. She is passionate about promoting positivity both professionally and personally and is the first to show compassion for anything or anyone showing vulnerability. The Euesdens and EWN actively support local charities, and by helping to raise much needed funds, they give back where they can. Whether raising more than €20,000 for

Age Concern, or helping victims of the economic crisis, Michel is keen to support local charities that ensure all funds raised will help those in need.

‘One of my goals is to increase awareness of the importance of breast and ovarian cancer screening, and to make the facilities more easily available. Also, I am campaigning for minibuses for the elderly to be more readily available to take them to hospital, particularly for chemotherapy appointments. It’s tragic that many of those who can’t afford transport simply go without treatment.’

Southern Spain has fallen victim to natural disasters in recent years, and most famously, flood and fire. Michel and Steven worked tirelessly with the local community to ensure those affected were helped, through fundraising events and bringing those who were affected together. By looking out for those in need and lending a helping hand, Michel and Steven have shown the EWN to be the paper that also gives back, as it’s the expat community which has staunchly supported the business.

She is also proud to still call the EWN Company of the Year. Retaining the title for two years, the competition’s strict criteria confirmed that the EWN has impeccable ethics, working practices and it benefits the community. A recipient of several awards, Michel was particularly touched when her very own EWN team voted her as the Most Inspirational and Motivational Leader. Choked by the sincerity of the people she considers great friends as well as professional peers, the closeness and dynamics of the team are what makes the EWN the greatest publication in Spain.

Steven Euesden takes his responsibility to the newspaper and the clients very seriously, particularly in hard times, when there is added pressure to advertise to get products and services seen by the right people. It’s his mission to make sure that advertisements help businesses grow and put them on the path to greater success. His focus is to grow the paper, to make it the best it can be. He recognises that the EWN print run and distribution list are vital to their clients’ success, because the more copies distributed, the more people are exposed to advertisers, meaning more potential business for all.

‘Hard work, honesty and determination are essential in our line of work, and it is crucial to have successful marketing campaigns, which is my responsibility. Since the economic crisis hit in 2007, it hasn’t been easy for anyone, but keeping our distribution and print run high was always a priority. We don’t just claim to have the widest distributed English language newspaper, it’s a fact, and we are proud that we have been able to maintain our high standards for so long. Also, working day-to-day with my wonderful wife, I couldn’t ask for anything more rewarding,’ explains Steven.

Steven’s motto is, ‘we work the hours that suit you.’ He feels that one of the best ways he can help fellow expatriates is to offer his time. Whether six in the morning or last thing at night, he is happy to make time for his clients, often acting as a business

consultant, creating tailored campaigns to suit individual client needs.

‘Our dynamic team is like one big family. We celebrate the highs and work through the lows together, which is undoubtedly the key to our continued success.’

It has taken unswerving faith, commitment, vision and a lot of hard work to grow the EWN to where it is today. According to Steven, working in the UK media seems like a walk in the park compared to starting a newspaper in Spain. It takes more money, time and risk, but the end result makes it all worthwhile.

‘The saying, ‘life is a journey and not a destination’ certainly proved true throughout 2012. We recognise that expats are currently experiencing hard times and we want to help them through. With a positive mental attitude, determination and bravery, we are still here, bigger and stronger than ever, we just can’t be matched.’

This year, Steven is looking forward to the continued growth of the product, by providing clients with the best possible marketing tool. He is bursting with excitement and knows that this year he can take EWN clients to another level. Nicki Burgess was a client of the EWN before joining the ever-expanding team. Already a successful businesswoman in her own right, she brings an eclectic mix of no-nonsense professionalism and light-hearted resolve, guaranteeing results every time. She is bilingual and bicultural, so she thinks like an English and Spanish person. Her adaptability and versatility are what sets her apart. Her dynamic professional and personal relationship with Michel and Steven only further cements the closeness of the EWN family, pushing to produce the best paper possible, for the benefit of the expatriates who have come to rely on the paper as an essential source of information for life in Spain.

Why did you choose to work for the EWN?Having lived and worked in Spain for most of my life I understand the importance of working for a reputable company and gaining job satisfaction. What is the highlight of your day?It may sound like a cliché, but just being here due to the buzz and the passion of the team.

How do you contribute to a positive working environment?I contribute by doing the best job that I can and working as part of a team.

Any anecdotes about working at EWN?In the first few weeks of starting at the EWN, I remember trying to make a good impression but as I was casually walking out of my office, I caught my heel in my trouser hem. I slid across the floor whist grabbing onto the door handle of the accounts office to break my fall. The door swung open, which resulted in the chief accountant Amalia laughing uncontrollably, as the rest of the office gathered round and were soon in stitches.

However, it’s my relationship with my colleagues, particularly Michel, that is most important to me. People often refer to us as the “Cagney and Lacey” of the Costa del Sol. Both hard-working women, we take our jobs very seriously. We have a great working relationship and I feel privileged to call her a close friend and also a mentor.

Why did you choose to work for the EWN? I had worked in several design studios and as a teacher, but had never touched on the subject of working in the Press. I was ready for a new experience and I liked the idea of working for an English language publication as it would be a challenge for me, which is what I wanted.

Over the last 12 years working for the EWN, I have seen that Michel and Steven do things on their own terms. They have systematically put together a close team, all working at the same speed and with the same attitude. The business is run efficiently, there isn’t one weak link. We all complement each other.

What is the highlight of your day? It’s very satisfying when we have sent the paper to print and we see the end result on a Thursday morning.

How do you contribute to a positive working environment? I always try to help and encourage my peers through the tough times that can occur during the production of a weekly newspaper. With EWN having six editions, it can get a little hectic at times, but we all pull together. I know everything about the EWN, weathering every storm, which I think has earned the respect of my peers.

Any anecdotes about working at the EWN? There are many, but the latest and funniest was when a colleague put his Superman boxers on the outside of his trousers and paraded around the office. We told him it was an English pre-wedding tradition and he fell for it.

Amalia Calle Finance Director

‘Our motto is we will.’

Why did you choose to work for the EWN? I heard about the job through a friend and began working here. I’ve never looked back since; the job satisfaction I get here is second-to-none. It wasn’t easy at the start though, as I spoke no English and Michel and Steven spoke very little Spanish. So there were a lot of hand signals for quite some time. Now my English has improved dramatically and I help others learn Spanish, like one big happy family.

What is the highlight of your day? I would have to say at the end of the day on Friday. When the numbers are good, I am a very happy lady. However, if the numbers aren’t good, I take it very personally because every minute of every day I put my heart and soul into the business. I understand cash-flows, so I will work alongside each individual and their business campaigns.

How do you contribute to a positive working environment? I try to be as positive as I can on a daily basis. It truly is a privilege to work with such fantastic people. I look up to Michel and Steven so much. I am inspired by their ability to run the Euro Weekly News, they find the time to spend with each individual in the company, and that they want to do so much for the community. It makes every day in the office not seem like work.

Any anecdotes about working at the EWN? Just working side by side with Michel and Steven and seeing the company continue to grow. Steven is the greatest sales person, he is so passionate about his product, and he knows what each client needs individually. He works so hard, obtaining new business and renewing current. In this economic climate, it’s not an easy thing to do, but he does it so well.

Michel has a wonderful spirit. She always pushes me to be the best I can be, both professionally and personally. The most important thing is that if you need her, she is always there for you. For me, The Euesdens combined make the best team.

‘Love and passion has made the business what it is today.’

Why did you choose to work for the EWN? I actually came into the office asking to borrow money from my mum, Michel, but she taught me a valuable lesson that day; you have to work for something if you want it. I was told to get on the phones and start making sales if I wanted money, and now I’m head of the department. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

What is the highlight of your day? Getting a deal and looking forward to the onward journey with the client. I’ve completely grown up with the EWN, it’s been in my blood from the very beginning. It’s been hard work, as nothing is achieved overnight and without determination and grit, but I know a lot of love and passion has made the business how it is today, so it’s a beautiful thing to see it flourish as it has. I would like to see the paper progress by distributing more copies and by introducing more editions for more areas, and as there is no competition with the EWN being so unique, I know this can, and will, be achieved.

How do you contribute to a positive work environment? I think the first thing that would spring to mind about me is that I’m very loud! But I’ve got an upbeat and chirpy character that I use with all my clients and colleagues. There is rarely a day when I’m down in the office…what is there to be down about? I work for the best company! I’m so proud that we cover six different regions, all in one week. I definitely haven’t reached my full potential, and my colleagues often tell me that they are proud of how much I have achieved, being so young. There are no limitations to what I can achieve.

Any anecdotes about working at the EWN? When I first began working at the EWN, Michel told me you have to earn your way in life and told me to play to my strengths and get on the phones. I now thank her because I have become another person, and developed another side of myself that I never thought possible. I have achieved things I never thought I could.

‘The company is honest and reliable.’

Why did you choose to work for the EWN? I knew I would be working for a great company. I was previously a client of the newspaper, so knew exactly what kind of business I would be working for and that was what attracted me. The company is honest and reliable.

It annoys me when I hear both nationals and expatriates claiming that they cannot find employment during the present tough economic times. I know from experience with the EWN, as do other colleagues, that the paper regularly offers new job opportunities, but sadly often the company’s expansion plans are determined by the need to find willing and able individuals with a good work ethic. It’s as though people want to work 9-5, but that’s not what got the EWN to be where it is today. It has taken hard work, determination and great leadership from Michel and Steven.

What is the highlight of your day? It would have to be the mornings in the office when I know I have a fulfilling day ahead, but not knowing what the day is going to bring is exciting. We have sales targets that have to be met, but I always try to go above and beyond what is expected of me personally.

How do you contribute to a positive working environment? By helping my colleagues when things in the office get a little stressful around deadlines, essential for a weekly newspaper that produces six separate editions. I think it is important to help each other whenever possible, as we are all members of the same team. The camaraderie in the office is something I have never come across before, teamwork is invaluable.

Any anecdotes about working at the EWN? I don’t think I would be the same person I am today, if it weren’t for the Euro Weekly News. I’m certainly half the man I was when I started, all the hours in the office have been a great way to lose weight! My old suits literally hang off me. But seriously, I am just so proud to work for the EWN, and know that it will continue on to bigger and better things. It has made me a ‘glass is half full’ kind of guy.

Jennifer Leighfield

Translation Manager

‘Everyone I call a friend, we work so well together.’

Why did you choose to work for the EWN? It was somewhat by chance, I was working as a freelance translator and one of my college professors suggested I seek work with an English newspaper. In the interview, I was offered positions in reception and administration that didn’t interest me. Thankfully, one of the translators left and I was offered the job. Actually, after the first week I didn’t think I would last, but here I am 7 years later and I couldn’t be happier.

What is the highlight of your day? Every week I feel satisfied on seeing the fruits of our labour in print. I am so proud of what we achieve in seven days. Being bicultural, we don’t just take the news and translate it for our readers, we turn the stories into something expatriates will understand and identify with.

How do you contribute to a positive working environment? All the moments I spend with my peers in the office, everyone I call a friend, so we work so well together. When we all see the product of our hard work, there is a sense of unity in the office.

Any anecdotes about working at the EWN? Michel, Steven and the EWN carried out a huge campaign in 2011 to raise funds for a charity that is close to my heart. The Tomas Leighton Care Charity (TLC) was created to raise funds for the ongoing care of a boy called Tomas, aged 8, who has cerebral palsy, is almost totally blind, and has epilepsy as well as global learning difficulties.

He needs constant care and several types of therapy. Thanks to this and to his parents’ efforts, he has already done much more than doctors could have ever imagined. As well as giving coverage to events held for Tomas along the Costa del Sol and beyond, EWN raised €5,000 for TLC.

This was possible thanks to private and company donations both from people who had read about him in EWN and thanks to the team hitting the streets to raise money directly. All money raised for TLC is spent on Tomas’ daily care and therapies, and anything left over is put aside for future stem cell treatment. For that, I can’t be more thankful.

‘I always want to go the extra mile. It’s what makes us unique.’

Why did you choose to work for the EWN? I knew it would be a busy working environment, where I would have the opportunity to reach my full potential. Since I started two and a half years ago, the flagship Costa del Sol paper has grown and grown to be even bigger and better. I think the specials that we do will become more of a regular item in all six editions as they add an extra layer for readers and advertisers. Each advert I am presented with, I take personally, working closely with the clients to ensure they get the most out of their investment in the EWN. I always want to go the extra mile, which clients always appreciate. It’s what makes us unique.

What is the highlight of your day? I enjoy working closely with a great team, with whom I have formed relationships both professionally and personally. We’re like one big family, all working towards the same end goal. We all want the EWN to be the best it can be, each week without fail. Working with such a close team helps greatly as we communicate well together and know how to support one another.

How do you contribute to a positive working environment? I try to be helpful and supportive to other departments. We constantly try and think of new ideas of how to get an even better result each week and we all strive for the same goals.

Any anecdotes about working at the EWN? I remember when I first started as a proofreader, I was very quiet and my desk was at the back of the office, very hidden. One of the staff reporters told me a story of a proofreader that worked in New York on a newspaper and had died at his desk, and nobody discovered him for three days. Luckily I am now at the top of the office and working in Production where everyone can see me.

What is the highlight of your day? My highlight is on a Thursday, when the new editions are out and people can see the results of our hard work. Every newspaper we create contains a piece of our heart; from the sales, to the writers and the designers. It’s a great feeling when the paper is printed and there are no mistakes. There are very few jobs where you have a tangible product that you can be proud of.

How do you contribute to a positive working environment? Making people laugh, we are like a big family and everyone is so positive. I actually came up with EWN’s most coined phrase ‘we do it with passion’.

At the end of the day, passion is within all of us. When the paper is well received by the readers and clients are successfully generating more business from an advertisement you have created for them. Each week we feel this without falling into a routine, we are a big family, united with passion. We need to stick together for a cause, and passion helps us move forward in spite of how hard times can be. EWN equals passion, and there is simply no EWN without passion.

Any anecdotes about working at the EWN? I have so many, but once when I had just started working for the newspaper, Michel came in with a megaphone and was using it to shout loudly over the office! I’ll never forget that.

Why did you choose to work for the EWN? I love the world of design, and having previously worked in a Spanish newspaper, I saw it as a challenge to work on a non-Spanish-speaking newspaper. I think it’s important to continually challenge ourselves, so that we always work at our best, and that is exactly what the EWN is all about.

What is the highlight of your day? Definitely a Thursday, when after two sleepless nights thinking about adverts, pages, pdfs, etc, when I see the completed newspaper, I know all the effort was worthwhile. Also, it shows my skills are as a designer and the fact that I always put 100 per cent into everything I do.

How do you contribute to a positive working environment? Starting the day with a smile and trying to see the positive side of everything. I always try to help my colleagues when I can, whether helping them through a work dilemma, or by making someone laugh if they are having a stressful moment.

Any anecdotes about working at the EWN? I have laughed a lot, sometimes cried, but I always work with passion, as does everyone. Even when working under pressure, there are always moments of laughter with my friends. Most of the time it doesn’t even seen like work because we’re always having such a good time, yet always keeping a professional frame of mind and working to achieve something that we will be proud of.

I could actually write a book about all my treasured moments here. One instance which springs to mind was a Garden Party held at the Sohail Castle in Fuengirola a couple of years ago. It was great to see the whole EWN team working together for a good cause, and as always, enjoying the moment with a smile. It’s times like this when you feel most proud to belong to this amazing team.

DiSTASA‘I really don’t know how many more newspapers you have put out since the start of the crisis, and how you are doing it, although judging by appearances and I believe, once I had met Michel, it does not surprise me, because she is brave and forward looking, a good businesswoman, and, most importantly, what you have is a very good team.

Because of this, and analyzing the characteristics of the market that you manage, it would be, and can be, advantageous and profitable to diversify or expand, (I don’t know if the contents are similar or varied), because although we are still in existence, we are in crisis, and it is not the same for everyone in ‘everything’. So, I would suggest that you adapt to specific, stronger markets, perhaps, because the crisis does not affect them as much, and I refer to the market of English speaking foreigners, this could be a very diverse, wide and perhaps safe market, for the high volume, the customs, and the high levels of income that they have, and you can consider it as a corner of the market over which you have a lot of control and very little competition. You only need to see your newspaper and the content and the number of pages.

Because of this I am sure there has been a brave decision made by analyzing the possibilities of the market, its size, circulation and investment return, and perhaps, in times of crisis, there is less competition so that you may easily enter the market, or gain a part of the market, and create a loyalty and maintain the leadership you can realize and help the profitability of the ‘business’. In these situations it is very important to add up, even in times of such austerity, even a small amount is important and now is a good moment to increase volume with smaller volumes.’

Bidasoa Press‘The usual answer by editors (and other businesses as well) faced with a slump in the market is and has been to cut costs by reducing pages and editions, and as a consequence reduce distribution. It has been this way even when it is well known that a reduction in income can be compensated with difficulty by a reduction in costs, as drastic as it may seem.

So the answer to a business should not be this, but rather how to ‘maintain’ in a crisis situation what requires a lot of ‘financial muscle’ to support this transitory situation, that could last a long time, and taking into account that money is scarce then the general solution is to ‘shrink’ activity to reduce costs to the maximum. The opposite solution, in the sense of maintaining and even growing, is risky and needs a lot of faith, but it presents a big advantage in fighting against the competition in moments when the competition has opted to put itself in a weak position – and here is the possibility of gaining a large quota of the market – in front of the uncertainty to know for sure the economic effort needed to make and be obliged to accept (without knowing it) the reality of the final market once the crisis has passed.

So, we can say that the decision is a brave one – not exempt from risk- but one that can improve easily and noticeably the position of the EWN in the market. Everything shows many similarities that a navigator has facing a storm. He can ride out the storm until conditions improve, or better still can ride the storm using the winds to advance as far as possible in the nearest direction possible, and subject his boat and its rigging to enormous effort that can be measured, to arrive at its destination. ’

El Noticiero, The First Free Daily Newspaper published in Spain‘We go back to August 1993. The launch of a free daily newspaper was a journalistic initiative without precedence in Spain. There were weekly, fortnightly and monthly publications, but none daily, in our case with ample information on Malaga-Costa del Sol as well as some national and international news.

The creation of El Noticiero with four editions (Malaga, Torremolinos, Benalmadena and Fuengirola) was well received, although in journalistic and business circles, no-one thought this project, the financial support of which was and still is advertising, would last. A lot of effort: hours, days, months and years of hard work in order to support a family business created by veteran Malaga journalist Manuel Jimenez (aka Manolo Jota) which with the passage of time, has been able to maintain the presence of El Noticiero in towns of Malaga and the Costa del Sol, without ever missing our daily appointment (Tuesday to Saturday) despite the major financial crisis Spain is experiencing.

Over the years, the publishers managed to create a building (Casa de la Prensa - Home of the Press) in Benalmadena (Arroyo de la Miel) which it shares with some very special neighbours, the creators and publishers of a successful weekly publication: Euro Weekly. For El Noticiero, it is a pleasure to share the building with another publisher, in this case English, where the neighbourly relationship and sharing of information between the two companies are excellent.’

May 2012: Tomas Leighton appealThe EWN team was actively involved in raising money for eight-year-old Costa del Sol resident, Tomas Leighton who is blind, epileptic and also suffers from cerebral palsy. November 2012: Marbella international Film Festival 2012In November, EWN sponsored the seventh annual Marbella Film Festival, bringing together actors, directors, writers and critics to view hundreds of films. The five-day event culminated in a gala dinner and an awards ceremony held at the H10 Andalucía Plaza Hotel in Puerto Banús. It also provided a backdrop for artists to promote their work. This type of event is vital as it reminds people how much Marbella has to offer.
