ADVERTORIAL
INTERVIEW SPOTLIGHT
What can MATISA offer theEuropean rail-sector over and above its competitors?MATISA was created in 1945 by entrepreneurs
which had a vision of necessity to mechanise
track maintenance activities in order to exploit
not only the increase in production potential
but to enable safe and sustainable working
conditions for people working on the railways.
By doing so, MATISA clearly put itself in a
pioneering position and its high-spirited
work ethic has inspired personnel ever
since, helping to maintain our technology to
the latest evolution status.
With ever increasing traffic speeds and
schedules, the industry demands highly
accurate track geometry in order to enable safe
and smooth travelling speeds as well as short,
fast and efficient track maintenance activities so
that track worksites can be handed back in
expected time frames and to quality standards;
and MATISA has designed a range of specific
track construction and maintenance machines
which respond to the important criteria of fast,
efficient, accurate and high quality.
What has been MATISA’s most recent and importantcontract/project?Recent years have been interesting in many
ways. The European economic situation has
accelerated a repositioning process we
implemented a couple of years ago. The
market potentials have shifted slightly
which has enabled us to work on different
markets and projects. We are currently
working on interesting contracts as well as
prospective projects.
As you can imagine, many players in the
railway field favour discreet progression until
either the project reaches maturity or the
goods have been delivered. MATISA has
always respected its clients’ policies. However,
I can mention some tamper projects for the
European underground network, mining
maintenance machines, multi-purpose
track maintenance equipment and of course
the rehabilitation of some aging B 66 and
B 50 tampers for the Swedish market.
A manufacturer’s responsibility is not only to
deliver its production in time and to high
quality, but also to accompany its clients
throughout the lifespan of the product.
In this case, after over 20 years’ service,
these machines have been brought back
to our manufacturing facilities in Crissier,
Switzerland, near Lake Geneva, for a major
overhaul and upgrade to the latest tech -
nology. Handed back in scheduled time,
these machines are now working again for
another 15-20 years at their owner’s great
satisfaction. Similar activities have also been
undertaken on complex machines such as
track renewal trains.
Are there other rail-sector countries or regions that MATISA arelooking to break into in the future? MATISA is, and has been, active in most
worldwide regions since its creation.
Designed subsidiary representation and
selected agency presence enables us to follow
the evolution of various markets and other
opportunities very closely. Our products are
quite specialised and as you can imagine,
whilst the world is our playground, the
opportunities for the right product at
the right moment on the right market have to
be continuously assessed. So to answer your
question, MATISA is always looking to break
into other countries or regions and this will be
driven by projects which fit our products.
What are the core long-term rail-sector aims and goals for MATISA? As already mentioned, MATISA is the pioneer
in track maintenance mechanisation. This
position and our high spirit will always drive
our company and there is still huge potential
to increase, perfect and innovate in this
industry. Our work is not done yet; it has
barely started. Of course there will be the
technology improvements in what we are and
already have been working at, namely
productivity, automation etc. But there are
many other areas where there are huge
improvement or development possibilities.
I am talking about safety, of course, where
providing easy accessible and comfortable
working environment is vital, but also the
environmental aspect of this industry. A lot has
already been done in this sector but there is
still huge potential to be exploited. Pollution
and noise emission reduction, vibration,
sustainability and recycling are all areas of
improvements. What makes us passionate
about that? Simply the many ways these
challenges can be addressed. Think out of the
box, look at it and you will see it!
2015 marks the 70th anniversary of MATISA as it continues to be a pioneering supplier of innovative track maintenance activities. In an exclusive interview for European Railway Review, Marketingand Sales Director Roger Grossniklaus explains what the companycan offer the industry and how it is looking to expand in the futureto meet long-term goals.
MATISA, 70 years ofpassion…and it is only
the beginning
