MEDIA RELEASE EMBARGOED FOR TUESDAY, 31 MARCH 2015

The Tamil Language Festival 2015 Cultivates a Love for Tamil A host of exciting programmes has been lined up for this year’s Tamil Language Festival. More than 40 partner organisations and individuals involved in this year’s Tamil Language Festival (TLF) are ready to excite the community with the array of fun and engaging events especially put together for the Singaporean Tamil community. The Tamil Language Festival is the signature event of the Tamil Language Council. Throughout April, the community can participate in a series of literary, oratorical and cultural events that will encourage them to embrace their mother tongue and use it in their daily lives. This year, the festival will be held from 3 to 26 April with a wide variety of 40 programmes and activities to encourage the community to “Love Tamil, Speak Tamil”. “The programmes are targeted at various segments of the community and we want as many people to take part and benefit from them. They are also excellent opportunities for the community to immerse themselves in an environment where Tamil is spoken and heard. A special focus will be the youth in a concerted effort by the Council and its partners to influence and encourage the next generation of Tamil speakers,” said Mr Rajaram, Chairman of the Tamil Language Council. Some of these exciting youth-centric activities include:

- Ninaivugalodu Kuthugalam by Sirpigal Students will step out of their classrooms and into the ARTrium to learn about the history of the City Hall district and Old Hill Street Police Station by interacting with characters from the past at the ARTrium and the use of the latest mobile devices.

- Kavichaaral by Avant Theatre Watch the dramatic presentation of NAC 2014 Cultural Medallion Award Recipient Mr K T M Iqbal’s poetic writings over the years through “live” music performances and street-theatre movement. This lively event celebrates one of the greatest writers of Singapore’s literary scene and one that allows participants to be immersed in the beauty of the Tamil language.

- Pathay Nimidam by the Ravindran Drama Group

Budding script writers from all races will not want to miss this unique opportunity to create a 10-minute play in Tamil as well as learn, appreciate and support Tamil theatre in the process.

- Thamizh Thantha Kalaigal by the Annamalai University Alumni Association (Singapore

Chapter) Secondary school students will get to learn useful skills of researching, putting together a paper and presenting on Tamil art forms and history. They will also get the chance to hear from an Inscription Analyst who will share his personal experiences working on such artefacts and encourage these students to pursue their interests in history, culture and language.

Launch of TLF 2015 Mr S Iswaran, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office & Second Minister for Home Affairs & Trade and Industry, will officially launch the month-long festival “live” on Vasantham on Friday, 3 April at 6.30pm.

~~~ About Tamil Language Festival The Tamil Language Festival is spearheaded by the Tamil Language Council which was formed in 2000 under the auspices of MICA. It comprises representatives from the education sector, major community organisations, arts groups and the media. The Council has organised the Festival since 2007 with partner organisations marking it a major event in their organisational calendar. There has also been a growing number of organisations participating. Today, National Heritage Board (NHB) is the Council Secretariat, under MCCY. A key partner for the Tamil Language Festival is MOE’s Tamil Language and Learning Promotion Committee (TLLPC). Set up in 2006. TLLPC’s strategic focus is to promote the speaking and learning of Tamil among students.
