The Opening.
The film starts with a repetition of names and the name of the production
company, the fact that they all come up on a dark screen gives off a
mysterious vibe which creates a dark and gloomy atmosphere, the sense
of the black and white colours with the non digetic music in the foreplay
give the sense of a disturbance; that something later on the movie is out of
place. Regency is also something typical of the thriller genre, connected
with more dramatic, suspenseful movies. This then shows that the movie is
jammed packed with intense scenes.

The beginning.
The film begins with a montage of 5 master shots, the shots are of a isolated nature due tothe fact that all the images include something which is associated with a human; indeedno human being there shows the sense of loneliness. The sound creates even moretension as the piano being played is used to a dramatic effect as it is played in a slowand chilling, it also has a contrast, as it can be described as tranquil and soothing, it canalso give the edge of awkwardness and unease which creates the urge of great suspensethroughout the opening sequence . Furthermore, the sound is a non-diegetic sound which
the characters cannot hear, which shows that something which is about to occur willaffect them without warning.

The montage
The Establishing shot of the film is a house which seems to be isolated as the are
only trees and a lake around it; this of which seems to captivate the landscapeportraying a sense of death or mystery. A long shot was used so the housecould be portray the loneliness .The reflection of the house that is also showedcould symbolize that the house is going under or maybe going under, later onin the film. The existence of this house emphasis emptiness and highlightswhere the drama in the film will be or will unfold.

The empty canoe also highlights the theme of loneliness and separation from society, that film has began with. The ripples in the water also shows of how the weather has
picked up as we get closer into the house, The mist in the back also creates a tense
atmosphere as you are unaware of what is happening in the distance, making the
audience feel as if the story has not yet started and this is only an introduction. The mist
which is used throughout this shot is typical of the thriller genre, with the use of the
moving canoe also portrays the sense of unease.

The small windmill also represents the violence of the music as it nears the house as it turns
aggressively. The diegetic sound in this clip is very hostile and unsettling as you may beexpecting some sort of destruction through the weather vain. Also the fact that this image is
placed might connate that every action has some explicate grass gives a chilling effect.
meaning, that may be hiding a secret message to unfold throughout the movie. To add the
weather vain is placed in a depth of field, blurring the surroundings so that it can make you
pause and think about what's going to happen, this displays the change in weather
throughout the opening sequence, showing that it building up to a storm which will abrupt

the grass also give the sense of unsettle, showing that the weathers changing , may show
the movie could also have some kind of twist

A medium shot is used in this scene to show a child bike falling over, this is due to the weather which
has been building up through the sequence. This bike adds to the unsettling tension which istaking place in the movie, it gives the idea that the link between the damage of a childs bike
could show that something including a child has been hurt or will later to be damaged in some
way. It really unease's the audience because something so loved could be hurt or affected in
some way. It also adds to the idea of loneliness and captivity that something which is dominated
by a child, is not there that could also be connected with death in some aspects.

The extreme close up of the window may highlight the contrastbetween freedom and captivity. Furthermore, the lock of thewindow is the shot in the depth of field as the outside is blurredwhich can insinuate that freedom is now just an illusion that youare trapped into the house. furthermore that the people within thehouse have no freewill that they are locked away from life itself.

As the clip goes on another extreme close up is used to evaluate the aspect of tension
with the use of the shudder of a window frame hitting the window, the swinging noise
is very usual with the thriller genre, its almost like a creak also adding to the
suspense. Even so it adds to the idea that the storm is brewing up and with every
shot is getting closer to the home, which intensifies the idea that something abrupt is
about to take place within the movie.

• in this slide im adding to the unsettling mood which is carried out within the movie. A close up is
used of the wind chimes moving, adding a digetic tranquil sound from the wind chimes, this affect
is used to add to the sense that the storm is getting closer and closer towards the home, that
were nearly at the point when something is about to erupt. It also intensifies the mood which is
carried out within the opening sequence, with the use of suspense. To carry on my point we
have a medium shot of a dog laying down, this shot is used to show that the dog is twitching, this
then gives an urge of shuddering throughout the audience, as the dog is twitching we then knowthat something bad will occur, as animals have that sense among them. Furthermore the digetic
sound of the banging doors in the background unsettles the dog, he looks almost worried and
scared, as the expression we see whilst lying on his bed.

This shot is of a dissolved sequence to a contrast of a black background to the
title which is white. As it appears closely coming into view we can see that theword says faithful, that from the start we can tell everythnig jolly and cheerful…
