HOW DID YOU USE MEDIA TECHNOLOGY IN THE CONSTRUCTION AND

RESEARCH, PLANNING AND EVALUATION?

MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES

To produce the ancillary tasks which were the movie poster and magazine cover, Sameena used Adobe Photoshop CS3. This a professional piece of software that many people use in the media industry. Sameena was already quite familiar with the use of Photoshop but for any areas that she was unsure about, she used the aid of YouTube to find tutorials on performing certain tasks. You can her find her blog post detailing her work on the tasks here & here.

Levinia used her own digital camera – Fujifilm FinePix Z70 to take pictures of the setting and for the ‘Making Off..’ blog post. The camera took clear, quality photos and came in useful.

When editing, Tom who was the primary editor, used Final Cut Express. He used the application on the Apple Macs we had access to. He was familiar with the product as the rest of the group were but for any areas he needed assistance, YouTube was used to find tutorials on completing certain tasks. Taking part in editing and using different tutorials helped us all as a group to gain more knowledge in this area and understand just why the editing process is one of the key elements in producing movie trailers.

To collect the actual footage for our production, we used a handheld Canon camera. The camera itself was fairly simple and easy for us all to use. We all took part in the filming process and there were no major complications when it came to doing so. The camera along with the use of the tripod provided us with smooth clear shots, although for the forest scene, Dylan held the camera in front of him and ran with it which created quite a jumpy effect to show the audience that he was running away from something. This we feel created the feeling of fear and panic.

Finally, Levinia used Garage band for adding the music onto the trailer. We found two music pieces online and then imported them into Garage Band

along with the final cut of the trailer. It was much easier to edit the music on Garage Band than it was on Final Cut which is one the reasons we chose to use it instead. Also, the program had some useful and effective sounds loaded onto

it already which we also used in the trailer. Again, as with the other applications used, for any areas in which she was unsure about, Levinia used

YouTube tutorials to help and guide her. This post goes into more detail about the music and why we used it.

TYPE OF SHOTS WE USED

We used a LONG SHOT in both of these scenes. This type of shot helps to establish the location of the character and introduces it to the audience.

Page 6: Media Technologies and Shots

Here we used a CLOSE UP SHOT in order to emphasise the emotion and feeling we were trying to create in the scene. As you

can see, the boy (Tom) is hiding under his sheets and from his facial expression we can tell that he is scared. This is almost

exaggerated and made more apparent by the zoomed in, close up shot of him. The shots focus is completely on his character and

therefore, so is the audiences.

As you can see here, we used a LOW SHOT. This represents the power balance between the killer and the audience. As the audience look at the screen it is

almost as if they are looking up at the killer because of the low position of the camera. This creates the idea that the killer is therefore more powerful than

everyone else as he above us.

This is a scene from the trailer in the forest, in which we see Dylan dead and bloodied, the murder weapon laying next to him also covered in blood. From the position and angling of this shot, it is almost as if the audience themselves are looking from the killers point of view as the

angle would suggest that the body is being looked at because it’s on quite a HIGH angle. Again, the idea of power can be put into question because

the killer is obviously higher and standing over the lifeless body of the person he has just murdered.
