Media year 13 transition tasks: If you are looking to continue Media studies past A Level then it is vital that you continue to engage with Media during this isolation period. (Courses at University might be: Journalism, Media, Film, Production and many more!). Keep a media text journal. You need to have considered EVERY platform in the media and demonstrate an understanding for decisions made. I would recommend compiling an in depth analysis of at least three texts from EACH platform over the coming weeks. 1. Print advertising 2. Film trailer 3. Radio/podcast 4. Video Game- this can be a phone game! 5. Magazine front covers 6. Music videos 7. Newspapers 8. TV 9. Film 10. Social Media platform For example, you might pick a film poster (print advertising) and analyse it for: Media Language (colour, layout, image, size, sound, camera angles – ANYTHING) Industry – how the text demonstrates the industry’s values (for example, Marvel and gender boundaries). Audience – who are they targeting and how do you know? Representation – what groups are represented? Minorities? Women? Men? Gender? THEORY: I have included the key theorist cards within this pack. If you can be applying theory with your analysis it will help to keep you focused and ensure University transition is not a shock. For example, Paul Gilroy’s theory is demonstrated in the Black Panther film poster as ‘others’ are evident.

TV 9. Film 10. Social Media platform

For example, you might pick a film poster (print advertising) and analyse it for: Media Language (colour, layout, image, size, sound, camera angles – ANYTHING) Industry – how the text demonstrates the industry’s values (for example, Marvel and gender boundaries).

YOU COULD COMPARE WHAT YOU’VE FOUND: The Man With The Golden Gun represents men as strong and dominant. This is evident through the protagonist’s positioning in the frame and further reinforced by the costume and props. Bond’s character is evidently a hero (Prop) given the audiences’ preconceived understanding (most people recognise Bond as the heroic British spy (Hall)). His presence depicts him as strong and the archetypal male as holding a gun reinforces his authority and lack of fear (often traits associated with masculinity that media has reinforced over time (Butler)). Similarly, Black Panther represents men as strong and dominant. This is evident through their positioning and again their costume and props. Whilst the women in the poster do appear strong it is a man situated at the top, suggesting ultimate power and dominance. Therefore the two texts are supportive of Butler’s gender theory as they both represent masculinity as something strong and dominating. It might be inferred that these decisions were done in order to appeal to mainstream audiences as in general, mainstreamers do not like countertypes.
