The next simulation center rotation will begin on Thursday,
September 15th. All Medic EMTs and Paramedics as well as all
Mint Hill Fire Department Paramedics are required to complete
this simulation rotation.
In order to make the experience in the simulation center as
realistic as possible, it will be necessary for full-time employees of
both Medic and Mint Hill to schedule an appointment to go
through the simulation center with their partner (if one is
currently assigned).
If you are a new employee riding in a third-person status, you
should plan to go through the rotation with your current crew.
Part-time employees of Medic and/or Mint Hill may schedule
themselves to go through the simulator with another part-time
employee or can schedule to fill an existing simulation center
appointment vacancy. EMT personnel with Mint Hill Fire
Department are welcome to accompany a Mint Hill Paramedic
through his/her simulation rotation.
All certified personnel with Medic and Mint Hill Fire Department must contact Sam Barnes
(ext. 6143), John Bobbitt (704.618.0057), Brian Shimberg (ext. 6142), Trevor Taylor
(704.618.0040) or Tom Porcelli (704.618.0023) to schedule an appointment. The deadline to
schedule an appointment is Tuesday, September 13th. Attendance is mandatory and
provides (10) hours of continuing education toward your recertification. In addition, please keep
the following in mind:
Do not sign up within two (2) hours of your 10-42 time.
Operations will follow the disciplinary process for a no call/no show to your scheduled
simulation appointment.
If you cannot attend the time slot that you signed up for, it is your responsibility to do a
switch and a find a replacement for your time slot.
A simulation center rotation schedule will be posted in Operations. You must schedule
by phone. Please be sure to remember the date and time that you sign up as we will
not be sending out appointment reminders.
Be dressed in your Medic/Mint Hill Fire Department uniform for your simulation.
Please contact a member of Medical Services if you have any questions about the upcoming
simulation center rotation.
Simulations Begin in September!

As discussed during June’s InService, Medic will begin administering the FISDAP written test for all employees who currently
function at the Paramedic level on September 6th. The purpose of this test is to assist in the creation of more focused
educational and training opportunities by establishing a didactic baseline for all patient care providers. This will be the first
stage of testing which will later include all employees who are involved in the delivery of patient care. All scores will be
held in the strictest of confidence and will only be available to the employee through a face-to face-request
with Medical Services.
Paramedics are now able to pre-register for the FISDAP written test. Registration must be completed no later than
September 5th. Exams will be administered at 0900 hrs, 1300 hrs and 1800 hrs. Individuals will be given three hours to
complete the examination. If you have taken the FISDAP exam within the past six months, you are exempt from re-taking
the exam. However, you may take the examination again in an attempt to improve your score.
To pre-register for the FISDAP written test, please contact a member of Medical Services:
Johnathan Bobbit – 704.618.0057
Trevor Taylor – 704.618.0040
Tom Porcelli – 704.618.0023
Brian Shimberg – 704.943.6142
Sam Barnes – 704.943.6143
Please remember FISDAP testing is MANDATORY for all functioning Paramedics. Please contact a member of
Medical Services using the information provided above if you have any questions about the upcoming FISDAP written test.

The YMCA was recently recognized by the Lucky Hearts Campaign as a
Heart Smart organization. The YMCA received the Lucky Heart’s Heart
Smart award for having multiple AEDs in every branch and for its
emergency training for all staff since 1999.
To honor the Y for its emergency preparedness, on Wednesday, August
17th, the Lucky Hearts Campaign and YMCA President Andy Calhoun
donated two AEDs to Reverend Tony Marciano, Executive Director of
the Charlotte Rescue Mission, on behalf of the YMCA of Greater
Charlotte.
“The Y exemplifies what it means to be prepared for a cardiac related
emergency,” stated MMAE President JoAnn MacDonald. “We are
extremely honored to highlight the Y as an AED prepared organization and raise the awareness for the need for public use
AEDs by donating two AEDs to the Charlotte Rescue Mission.”
Marciano believes that Charlotte Rescue Mission’s clients are at risk of a cardiac event because many have neglected their
health. He says they’ve experienced emergencies in the past, but did not have AEDs present. The donation of two AEDs
and staff training provided by Mecklenburg EMS Agency (Medic) will prepare the Charlotte Rescue Mission’s men’s and
women’s program centers for possible life-threatening emergencies.

Please be advised that Medic does not stock
PEDIATRIC AED pads on our ambulances. There
have been recent instances where pediatric multi-function
pads have been given to First Responders for their AEDs.
The pediatric multi-function pads can be forced into the
AED connector. These pads do not have the circuit to
reduce the AED’s voltage to pediatric levels as
actual pediatric AED pads have. The use of pediatric
multifunction pads in an AED creates a potentially
critical hazard.
The pediatric multi-function pads are in a green package, are
plainly marked as multi-function pads and do not have a
AED symbol on the package. They are intended to be used
with cardiac monitors that allow the joules to be selected
by the user. Pediatric AED pads are packaged in a blue
wrapper marked FR2 and Heartstream. The ADULT pads
that we trade out with First Responders are multi-function
pads. The adult multifunction pads do not present any
hazards. ** Again, PLEASE DO NOT GIVE OUT
PEDIATRIC MULTIFUNCTION PADS**.
Please contact Operations Manager, Bob Francis at ext.
6251 or via e-mail at [email protected] if you have any
questions regarding this urgent request.

We have begun the process of issuing the new outerwear to all field employees. As we issue the outerwear, all field
employees will need to return any Agency issued outerwear (blue outerwear, blue winter jacket, blue parka, etc.). Once you
receive the new outerwear, it will be the only approved outerwear for use while on duty. Please bring your Agency issued
gear bag and all PPE equipment, we will inspect all issued equipment and you must complete a new equipment checklist.
Due to the number of employees that we must process please follow the schedule below:
Week Dates Assigned Supervisor
Week 5 August 22nd – August 28th Simmons, C / Phillips, K
Week 6 August 29th – September 4th Stanford, Jamie
Please report to the new building, enter from the front door into the lobby. Outerwear issuance will be available from 05:00
– 22:00 seven days a week. Please allow up to ten minutes for this process as we have over 300 employees with new
outerwear.
If you have any questions or concerns about Medic’s Outerwear distribution process, please contact Michael Stanford via
e-mail at [email protected] or at ext. 6230. Thank you.

Please be advised that the dates and times for Scope of
Practice testing will soon change. The Learning and
Development department will dedicate two days out of
every month for Scope of Practice testing, rather
than conducting them on a quarterly basis. Scope of
Practice testing should be completed within 90-days from
your expiration date in order to meet the North Carolina
Office of EMS standards. Completing the Scope of Practice
within this timeframe will provide Medic employees with
the opportunity to test up to two months before your
expiration date. Notices will be sent out approximately 120
days prior to your expiration, encouraging you to schedule
your appointment for testing. However, we strongly
encourage to sign up the first month you are eligible rather
than waiting. Below are the new dates for Scope of Practice
Testing, here at Medic:
September 13th, 14th
October 11th, 12th
November 8th, 9th
December 13th, 14th
Please contact Sam Barnes at ext. 6143 or via e-mail at
[email protected] if you have any questions about the
new Scope of Practice testing schedule.

All Medic employees are reminded not to release the
code to the ambulance entrance to patients or
family members. Presbyterian Hospital has recently
experienced more and more instances of people
coming in and out of their Emergency Department
entrances area knowing the code and stating they got it
from the Medics.
Please contact your immediate Supervisor if you have
any questions regarding this request.

Top 10 (as recorded on Wednesday, August 17th)
From USA TODAY - A new study confirms that activities as simple as brisk walking can boost weight loss while
trimming dangerous belly fat and overall body fat.
Scientists at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle followed 102 men and 100 women for a year. At the
beginning, the participants, ages 40 to 75, were sedentary and unfit. They were divided into two groups: One was
encouraged to do 60 minutes of physical activity a day, six days a week; the other was given no specific exercise advice.
There was no diet plan.
Among the findings, presented in Phoenix at last month's annual meeting of the Obesity Society, a national group of
weight-loss researchers and professionals:
Women who increased their activity level by an additional 3,500 steps a day lost 5 pounds during the year.
Men who added that many steps lost 8½ pounds in a year.
The exercisers who did the most — 60 minutes, six days a week — decreased their
belly fat by 10% to 20%.
Those same exercisers trimmed 10% to 15% of their overall body fat without losing muscle
mass. In addition to lowering the risk of many serious medical conditions, regular physical
activity also improves quality of life by reducing stress, depression and anxiety, and by
improving bone and joint health, sleep and memory.
